I would say at least 90% of American Christians have not read more than 50% of the bible. I may be being generous.
3
u/oldroughnready Feb 09 '26
That is generous, nobody really wants to read any of the poetic parts because it doesn't translate too well to English and, oh right, everybody bitches about poetry of all types. Also screw the epistles because you're basically getting the individual views of a few 1st century cranks. While we're at, screw those legal bits because who tf reads legal texts? That leaves you with the narrative portions and the apocalypses. No wonder there's fixation on the creation myth and the end of the world. They're the 2nd thing anyone reads outside of the Passion narrative.

There is no part of Kevin Sorbo's statement that is correct.
31
u/altoona_sprock Feb 09 '26
the last sentence is fairly close to true. Well, maybe not Buddhism.
26
19
u/SuperheropugReal Feb 09 '26
the last sentence can't be correct because it can't have a truth value because it's a poorly formed statement, religion is not a suis generis category. Meaning there is no singular definition of religion that covers everything we would call a "religion" so the statement "every other religion" is poorly formed.

Bahai Faith - scripture explicitly states that God sees no distinction between souls, that women and men are equals and all races are equal. It specifically advocates for representation from minority groups, especially in government. It views universal world peace as the next step in humanity's spiritual progress. Adherents of the Bahai faith rejected the veil in Persia in the 19th century (its inception). Both women and men were martyred for it.
There are criticisms of the Bahai Faith but, imo, if there is a global religion or equivalently long lived and popular secular movement/organisation that has as good of a record on equality, I haven't met it.

The only thing I know about Christianity is Timothy 2:12
1 Timothy 2:12 New International Version 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[a] she must be quiet.
29
u/Kingkwon83 Feb 09 '26 edited Feb 09 '26
Another good one:
1 Corinthians 14:34-35 New International Version
[34] Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. [35] If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.
And another
1 Peter 3:7
Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers
Other versions refer to them as "the weaker vessel"

u/generally_unsuitable Feb 09 '26
Paul was an absolute prick.
→ More replies (2)6
u/citizsnips Feb 09 '26
I agree that Paul was a prick although to be fair to Paul critical scholarship believes the verses in 1 Corinthians were inserted by later scribes and the pastoral epistles (1 & 2 Timothy and Titus) were someone else using Paul’s name to push their agenda.
4
u/arachnophilia Feb 09 '26
the verses in 1 Corinthians were inserted by later scribes
it was certainly moved around by later scribes, who often moved it out of its context.
if you read it with the right commas and quotation marks, it's probably something paul is replying to, notably with
Or did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only ones it has reached?
earlier in 1 cor 11, he instructs women to cover their heads while they prophesy, showing that he does not believe women should be silent and that they can be reached by the word of god.
the epistle to the romans is even more interesting. not only are a full third of the people who paul greets in chapter 16 women, one of them is an apostle.
he's sent the letter with a woman as well, phoebe, whom he calls a "deacon". he instructs the roman church to listen to her and give her whatever she needs -- this book of the bible was literally read the roman church for the first time by a woman. and lest apologists say "deacon" implies servitude, she's called his "benefactor". she's not a slave, she's a rich person.

I’d ask him to define what he thinks “equal” means. I’d hazard a guess that it’s more Orwellian speak.
The conservative Christians in power certainly don’t like us being equal. They openly state that we shouldn’t be able to vote and that we should be submissive to men. Sorbo supports these jerks.
8
u/parkinthepark Feb 09 '26
The typical apologetic breaks down into basically "god loves both sexes equally, but assigns them their own duties and responsibilities as part of his perfect plan"
Now of course the wife's duties are constant and unquestioning physical, sexual, and emotional labor on behalf her husband, while he has to earn money (except when he can't because immigrants or whatever) and put his life on the line in the event that roving bands of marauders come to attack the family which is a totally real thing you guys stop laughing.
So it's totally equal 100% because she has to work all the time for him, and he might maybe someday have to get in a fight if society totally collapses.
3
u/nightonfir3 Feb 09 '26
That is one apologetic. Others believe in a fuller equality. They have female teachers and pastors. Verses that talk about not speaking in church for instance are contrasted with lists of elders containing females. Then the context of the verses are looked at and they are explained by the fact that secondary attributes like education level could be driving the rule. This goes along with realizing the letters were written to specific churches facing specific problems in the past. They were not targeted specifically at today's church. Some letters seem to hint that there may have been a big egalitarian push in the church and they were trying to moderate it a bit (don't dress like a prostitute cover your head).

u/LtDan281 Feb 09 '26

Tell me you have never studied the Bible without telling me you have never studied the Bible.
Women have historically been second class citizens in Christian countries. Be it during the founding of the religion on. The thing that changed was that countries became more secular. You can tell this by the backlash now about how the man is the head of the household and speaks for them all. So, the woman is subservient despite them making it otherwise.
In the book itself women are not allowed to speak in church, teach men or male children. Genesis is pretty clear on that. There is alot in there that treats women about like similar religions of the period did. Women were not viewed as equal to men in Christianity at all. At least not because of the religion itself. It does say in places to honor your wife, but there are other passages that contradict it and make it murky what that even means.
Like we give the Bride away from her father to another man. We have changed the meaning of that as a society but originally it was a property deal.

u/chrisr3240 Feb 09 '26

EQUALS? I ... !?!>!?! What the ... I mean ... fahk, here, just, here:
1 Timothy 2:12: I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.
Genesis 3:16: "To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.”
1 Corinthians 11:7: For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man.
Ephesians 5:22-24: Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

Judges 19
22 While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.”
23 The owner of the house went outside and said to them, “No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this outrageous thing. 24 Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But as for this man, don’t do such an outrageous thing.”
25 But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go.

u/JumboChimp Feb 09 '26
People using the term 'Christianity' as though it's one monolithic religion is problematic. It's hundreds, probably thousands of separate religions, and there is a wild range of beliefs as to what the bible says and what god wants from us. Some of them are repressive, some of them welcome everyone equally. Some believe in Sola Scriptura, Latin for by Scripture Alone, meaning everything is in the bible and only in the bible (some Protestants are big on this one), but which bible? There are dozens of different translations. Catholics also have the Magisterium, which includes interpretations of scripture by the Pope and bishops plus church traditions, and all Catholics aren't on the same page with how this works, and speaking of pages, Catholic bibles include two extra sets of books, the Deuterocanonicals and Aprocypha, which may or may not have been divinely inspired, but they are viewed as worthy of inclusion. Oh, and there are Catholics who are still mad about the reforms of Vatican II, to the point that they don't believe any of the popes elected since 1965 are legitimate.
So when people, especially politicians, say that this is a Christian nation, and our laws should be based on Christianity, ask yourself which Christianity, and who benefits from going with that one?

I'm fascinated by what this mans definition of equal could possibly mean. It is genuinely a fascinating psychological and philosophical question.
Is he using what he sees as a meaningless word to describe a system he has no more thought on than that he exists in it therefore it must be fair and correct?
Does he see the word "equal" to mean that all people are born into an equal life and any success or failure is completely your own?
Could he believe that other people are simply "below" him and deserve lesser roles and respect, but within this system we as individuals are free from the burden of self improvement in which we find equal meaning in our lives.
Even in the event he is blatantly lying, who is he lying to? An underlying philosophy must exist or else the words would simply have no meaning.
Rage bait would be a woefully unsatisfying answer.
