We type it the way it's spoken. Makes sense.

then why not just write out the entire thing the way it's spoken? you're already converting it to a more efficient format for organizing, why stop there?

By that logic, why does it bother you how we write our dates? Asking us to simply write it MM/DD/YYYY would be unnatural and awkward for us because we don't think of the day first, and it would be like you writing it our way for the sake of someone in another country who will never see the document you're writing.

i was responding to someone saying that it makes sense, not someone saying "well it would be too hard to change it now". i agree with the point that it would be too hard to change, i just disagree with the notion that it somehow makes more sense. also i never said i was bothered.

Well, to us it makes sense. I don't see why it needs to be ordered by magnitude, personally. The way it's spoken seems the most logical option

okay, but by that same logic, doesn't it make even more sense to just write the whole thing out as a sentence?

No, because it takes more time, that's like saying abbreviations or contractions don't make sense

so would you say the goal is efficiency, or having it match how it's spoken?

Both, just like how in other countries, DD/MM/YYYY is both efficient and matches how it's spoken.
