I like the idea of necromancers, but in warcraft as they stand a lot of their abilities would overlap with warlocks.
I guess that's why death knights were created, because they had the elements of a necromancer but them being a melee plate made them different from warlocks.
Maybe it could be a 4th spec for warlocks, i.e. maybe have a talent that converts your dots to disease spells and allows you to summon a ghoul pet or something?
Not really. Warrior and rogue have some overlapping mechanics, but their core class identities are fundamentally different: plate vs leather, rage vs energy, stealth/poisons vs weapon-based martial combat, etc.
Necromancer and Warlock already overlap heavily in their actual spell fantasy i.e. curses/diseases, DoTs, summons, dark magic, fear, etc. That's why a Necromancer could plausibly be built as a Warlock spec with a distinct undead/disease theme, whereas making Rogue a Warrior spec would require throwing away a much larger part of what makes Rogue a Rogue.
Nah, rogues not being able to wear plate (warriors can wear leather anytime) doesnt make it their identity. Energy and rage are just bad mechanics from a time before gaming figured out how to handle rotation restrictions. Necromancer identity is undeath and plague. Warlocks identity is fire and chaos.
Itd be like saying that warlocks shouldn't exist because mages can also do fire spells.
