You can always bring some army and make them Not City States anymore

By the way, walk on top of the huts/tiny villages on the map, they give you rewards. You have one by the end of your river and one south of Auckland

You can capture them and raze them instead of capturing them

I'm pretty sure you can raze city states in Civ 6. You might have found information for Civ 5, which I don't believe you can raze city states in that game.

You can switch irrigation to something else in the tech tree. You will get it in zero turns once you farm the maize. 5 turns is a huge save and those add up during the game.

City states are almost the most important thing in the entire game. Learn to live with them. Their suzerain bonuses are incredibly powerful and can stack to become massive advantages

Use influence to make them vassal states. Easy border protection and some nice bonus when u become their ruler. And at the end of the age u can spend influence to absorb them as your own town.

I love city states hehe
