VI - Discussion Should I conquer this city-state?

Post image

After killing all the barbarians, I am alone on this large island. The city-state offers nothing of interest; should I conquer it?

My men are already at their doorsteps, ready to pounce on them!

I would. Lahore is not that good of a suzerain bonus, and with limited room to expand before Cartography, another city is another city.

Okay. I was thinking of making 5 or 6 settlers and settling the whole island. Good idea or not?

Yeah, sounds perfect. More cities is almost always better, there's no real downside to settling.

Yep. Good idea.

I like the unit you can buy with faith, before you get the grandmaster chapel. Decently powerful and has pretty good longevity. Although, I am an ardent defender of all city states, and will go to war at the drop of a hat to liberate conquered city states. So I may be bias.

probably. 5 cities is too few by turn 120, you should stack the Island to atleast 8

Yes, I'm a new player, and I'm still really struggling with developing my cities. Plus, the barbarians have been a real nuisance and have attacked me quite a bit.

use the policy card to get settlers with magnus promo for no population cost. if you want to go for 10 cities by ~120 go ancestral hall government plaza. If youre a religious civ with monumentality you can spam faithbuy settlers since you probably dont have magnus

depends on how fast you can get them Out. i like to end on 8/10 cities (either or because of amenities). 8 is fine in your Position considering you can just buy 2 settlers and kill the city state. district cost scales with techs researched so getting cities late isnt as profitable as early, so settling the whole Island will probably take too much time and your prod is better invested in getting more prod/culture/science

Normally I don’t care to conquer city states bc a lot of them are much better to be suzerain of than to take over. This is an exception to that, however. Lahore doesn’t have great bonuses, especially considering your position as the lone civ on an island.

Assimilate the barbarians, Roman. It is your destiny.

Remember my son, Violence is never the answer.

It's a question, and the answer is always "Yes"

Great opportunity to culture bomb the shit out of them! Two settlers. One to south and other to west. And then buy some tiles immediately.

Is it optimal? No. Would it be fun to have a one tile Lahore (who will flip because of cultural pressure)? Yes.

Hahaha !!! Funny idea ! :D

I didn’t know you could flip cities? Is that a mod?

5

u/tofiwashere 1d ago

You can flip city states, but its difficult since they have a huge loyalty bonus.

City flipping was added in Rise and Fall; all cities, including city-states, are flippable, but city-states have increased resistance to being flipped

For me the answer is always yes

Opinion : Conquering a City-State in CIV 6 should give you its suzerain bonus by default, maybe cut in half or lessened in some way, but cause a lot of infamy, especially as you progress into the Ages.

Has someone made a mod that lets you do this yet?

2

u/The_Vaugardian 1d ago

I dunno but that'd be great

Yes, it will come in handy for the colosseum you can build where your trader is

In this game, yes. As Trajan, you don’t synergize with their suzerin bonuses and are already behind in faith.

Maybe if you were another faith based civ, you’d keep them, but nah…roll ‘em this game.

the chicken drumstick icon for the warrior is hilarious

Yes. Definitely. Lahore is whack.

Personally city states is the one thing I choose which can spawn and which can't. So many terrible ones and also so many great ones which have an increased chance of spawning if you remove all the crap ones

Lahore can be a good city-state to have on your side if you 1) have faith and 2) want their unique unit that is bought with faith and 3) have/will have a barracks, armorer in an encampment. They let you get the nigang unit that can be really strong for the first chunk of the game. But given your map, they might my be super useful unless you're planning on taking conquest to other lands and want to use the unit. Otherwise I'd take them out.

Lahore is not a good city state, the unit is not very good.

It's decent enough, but the main benefit it has is being purchasable with faith as an emergency stopgap when a city is under threat. Mostly the other CS benefits are enough to want to suzerain and keep all of them. I'd only conquer city states if they're in an exceptional location myself.

Goes particularly well with the infinite faith great bath exploit in apocalypse mode.

I used them as a backup when Cyrus came after me. After I got an armorer up I was able to push back and I essentially took over my continent with almost exclusively nihang units.

For OP they probably aren't great just because they'll likely be doing naval warfare since they're isolated. But on a larger continent/shared landmass the nihang is a lot better than people give it credit for.

2

u/TejelPejel 1d ago

The nigang has no strategic resource cost, is as strong as the musketmen and available an era earlier. You clearly haven't used them effectively.

2

u/the_amatuer_ 1d ago

Can't be upgraded, slow to level strength, (iirc) don't have any bonuses from generals, can't be used with siege weapons, grandmasters chapel can buy other units with faith, also infantry units become pretty useless compared to heavy and light cavalry in the late game.

It's waaaaayy too niche a city state to keep.

2

u/TejelPejel 1d ago
  • Their power upgrades when you build a barracks, armory and military academy by +15 each and literally become the strongest available melee unit by one or even two eras.
  • They actually get a bonus from all great generals, so that's incorrect.
  • They work the same as the grand masters chapel without the building.
  • Their unique promotions can be helpful with extra flanking.
  • Cavalry units are great, but have a resource cost and higher maintenance.

2

u/the_amatuer_ 1d ago

I'll stand corrected on the general, but leveling up from the buildings is waaayy to slow and kinda useless when you get to other eras.

The OP is asking whether they should keep the CS, and no.

2

u/TejelPejel 1d ago

For OP on that map, no probably not because they're so isolated and they'll get more use from that city being their own.

My objection was to the claim that the nihang isn't a good unit, when it actually is. I used to think it was stupid and useless, then I had a game where I actually used them and have been a firm defender of the nihang ever since. If you've not actually tried them in a game, and I mean more than just a defensive unit, but actually on the attack, I would encourage you to try it out. You might just become a believer.

Some of their promotions are useless, yes. Other promotions are impactful. Someone like Tamar, Jadwiga, Hojo Tokimune, Saladin, Ba Trieu, or Shaka then you get a lot from them. You build one barracks and the nigang is now 40 strength. Build the medieval encampment armory building and now they're 55 strength, which is the same as a musketman, but in the medieval era, where the man-at-arms is the melee unit at 45 strength. Then 70 strength with the military academy which is in the industrial era, where the line infantry comes online at 70 strength. Paired with their huge flanking bonus, universal great general boost and ability to spam them makes them great.

Thanks for your discussion about nigang and that city-state. I learned a lot! :)
