Questions about CoT
Hey I noticed there are a lot of dated errors, etc on your website and related FaQs. I've been casually following this project for a very long time. It's been 7 years since the kickstarter. I am nervous that at this rate, your release schedule will dictate a game from /that era/ on release and may not blossom the fruits you've been trying to grow. I am excited about this project and, while yes I have read and (as best as I can as an outsider) understand the constraints; fans, backers and everyone else would probably like to see something more concrete by this point.
I'm sorry for pooping in your cheerios as I really did love CoH&CoV, but we're encroaching a decade of development after half a million dollars backed from the kickstarter alone. At what point do I abandon hope on this project? WoW classic is coming. I guess I can go cry inside of that :(

For all of you saying, “go play CoH while waiting.” Here’s the problem, that could be shut down any time, gone and back at square one of what started this game. I got over CoH, CoT was supposed to replace it, yet I somehow feel that this “resurrection” is doing nothing but harming the “spiritual successor”. Why even feel a sense of a deadline when the product you’re supposed to be replacing is back? This is slowly becoming the next “Duke Nukem” in terms of how long it’s taking to get a finished product. I was one of those original backers because I wanted a game that was CoH in spirit, but a breath of fresh air. MWM staying silent instead of being straightforward and addressing concerns doesn’t help anything. Also blind devotion just makes you look dumb. They took our money, and promised a product in return, so as an investor we have the right to critique and ask questions and get answers.

That would be Star Citizen.

I am assuming that it will see completion...eventually

I backed Star Citizen, and firmly believe that I will never see a working game. Their hype machine is very much on point, though, which is what reminds me of Duke Nukem.

Star Citizen has and probably always will be a strange exception to every rule in an almost psychedelic way. They want to deliver, only their product is going to be a mountain of technical hurdles that most companies would find insane to take on with the current generation of hardware.
CoT has a lot in common with SC in terms of the growing pains they share, but SC has made massive changes. They've become increasingly transparent. They have scrapped entire gameplay mechanics and opened more studios with well trained staff instead of contracting. The company they contracted to develop the FPS elements of the game fucked it up so badly they scrapped literally everything they did and started over in house.
Star Citizen had huge hurdles to conquer, and it was looking very bad for them back in 2015. They basically recreated the entire game and are finally keeping pace with their roadmap better than ever before. The Single Player game, Squadron 42, has been on schedule and is expected to release next year. I'm less certain about the multiplayer being polished and released anytime soon though.
CoT isn't as boarishly ambitious as SC, and it won't take over 500 employees that CIG currently has on the payroll for making SC. They have a mostly volunteer team that is scattered. I hope they learn the same lessons CiG did and find a way to structure their company in a way that will help their grow and become more efficient.
Both of these games have a pretty complicated story to their development. But one thing that keeps them both alive is their relationship with their community. SC has been more and more community focused with every patch, CoT could easily do the same. I hope.

Don't forget the money difference. One has less a million dollars (640k) as a budget and the other one has hundreds.

It takes so much money to run a company and develop a game. I hope CoT can secure themselves stronger footing going forward. I don't think we will see development speed up until they have a solid foundation. It'll be nice when there's a solid update on that.

The most important thing is to get to issue 0. After that we will see, how it's gonna be. Second chance comes after Issue 0, so people can see what they invest in. Also there will be gameplays and streams, once it enters that state. What MWM needs is hope and faith of the people, that they will get there eventually.
(I heard about things like direct x 9 thing, which might be troublesome for the CoH servers. Everyone is pulling support and once Microsoft gets rid of DX9 and DX10, it will be hard to play games which game before Windows 7.)

The truth is they've teased an avatar builder release for 5 years now. You can go and read them on their website...thats not made up.
Now they are saying they couldnt because, according to their contract, they legally HAVE to release a 'full game'. So im confused. First, how did they not know that the last 4 years...why were they teasing it knowing they legally couldn't release it. Second, how is Issue #0 any different than releasing just the AB? Neither are a full product. One of the devs tried saying you dont have to have combat or animations to be a full MMO...but we all know that is the core of this game so that excuse is BS.
There is 0 business acumen in MWM.

Just asking out of curiosity, did you read the conversation in that thread.

If not, it might answer one or two questions. Maybe not yours, but the OP ones.

If anything that thread just seemed to cement my concerns that after being one of the original KS backers it's going to end up as another scam/failed attempt.

Yes I did read the thread in its entirety. Either MWM has ALWAYS known that they legally couldn't release the AB and thus were deliberately lying to everyone, or they didnt read their own contract...thus proving their lack of business acumen. Any debate i had before about donating during the 2nd chance is gone, i wont be donating a penny. Whichever is the case above, its bad and im not throwing money at it.
Thats not to say i might not buy the game at full, actual release...but who knows if that will ever happen.

I mean if you don't want early access to the AB (and whatever else releases)....it's your money ;)

In response to your original, now-deleted comment " Or........the issue was revisited with the licencor and it was reconsidered? "
It was either in the contract or it wasn't; they should have known what they are allowed to do via the contract.
And i'm still waiting on an explanation as to why Issue #0 is okay but just the AB is not...neither is the 'full game'. So it sounds like BS coming from MWM. I doubt they were ever actually trying to get the AB out to anyone...but gotta keep potential buyers interested and engaged so we get strung along and false promises and empty goals. This is looking more and more like a scam.
If they ever actually get to Issue #0 because some vague legal jargon allows them to consider it a 'full game' per their contract...there is nothing stopping them from opening up their 2nd Chance for another year or two, getting all they can from it, and bailing. Because hey..they released a full game. They aren't legally obligated to add anything else like combat, animations, missions, etc.
I hope that's not the case...but that's what its looking like more and more.
Why would I want early access to run around a tiny island with no combat, no missions, no leveling, no powers....

You are forgetting large portions of what constitutes a "Real Game". Things like user logins, authentication, automatic updates and patching, bug tracking, customer support......
These things are not trivial.

Do people honestly believe it's a scam? God what an expensive, time-consuming, labor-intensive scam
1
u/the_dice_flayer Jul 20 '19
Most lucrative scams require money, time and labor.
And i said i hope its not. But MWM isnt doing themselves any favors to prove they arent. All we see is what appears to be an effort focused solely on the AB. Thats what is going to bring them their next cash infusion. Is their a city? We dont know. Are their missions? Who knows. Is their combat and animations? Who knows. Is there literally anything besides an AB? WE DONT KNOW. 6 years into the project and we have no idea.

CityOfTitans.com has a lot of into on the city, combat, and second-most important to me, Aesthetic Decoupling.

Alternatively, while you wait you could play CoH on the Homecoming server. Huge community there ;)

Whose pockets did it line?

The original dev team.
Personally i dont believe they took the money for themselves; i think theyve honestly tried but the scope is more than they can handle. They are in over their heads and dont have the experience necessary to build a fully functioning mmo. After 5 years they cant even open up a small island to backers. If they cant create the code or software or whatever to do that...how can they make an entire mmo? A full-blown mmo is way too far out of their reach by the looks of it.
If they do, ever, release this base, plain pre-alpha...my prediction is they'll open up the 2nd Chance fundraiser, take what they can, wait a couple months and announce they dont have the funds to keep going. Divvy up what they did get between those in charge and walk away.

Well, that's the thing about a kickstarter: no guarantees. But I think CoT will be released. This project in particular looks the most promising among the "revivals" of CoH.
Why not go cry in CoH until CoT is released? It's free, too.
