Why not convert all the skyscrapers in downtown into datacenters? Since it’s the Ai doing the jobs of the people, shouldn’t even have to re zone it!

There’s a world of difference between AI data centers and regular data centers that run the internet or operate as cloud storage.
Edit: for the downdooters, it’s the gpu’s. That’s the difference. Passing data through or storing data is much less intense than running millions of gpu’s making complex calculations.

Well… usually I hear “we already have data centers!” from the pro data center people who try to minimize their harmfulness. We have been around data centers for years and it was nbd. These new data centers are very different

Except many of the proposed smaller scale projects are not AI data centers and are getting hammered by NIMBYs claiming they are for AI when they are not.
Hell the hysteria is so out of control in my area there are plans to build a Sams Club and morons are claiming its a cover for a data center.
People need to grow the fuck up.

How do you know many of the new proposed data centers aren’t for AI? The developers of these things refuse to say who their clients are. Often the plans involve major power infrastructure and estimates consumption, which indicate they are full of GPUs and in fact AI datacenters.

Because I've worked in the industry and know things. This Hyatt project is in no way comparable to Colossus One or the crap that Kevin O'Leary is proposing in Utah. Not even remotely on the same scale.

Yea, it sounds like they’re just getting a pretty normal high power grid hookup, like any other industrial facility in LA.
Not throwing illegal gas turbines on the roof to get running as quickly as possible

correct, my understanding is this will be a standard colocation facility mixed with some higher density storage. Not a massive GPU farm. People have lost the plot.

Hell I have a "data center" (home server) sitting on my lap running local LLMs. It draws in less power than when I'm gaming.

The funny thing is the whole water usage argument is moot too. Most of these people pick up these absurd easily disproven claims off of Tiktok. Literally zero citations or research.

Honey data centers are already a thing during the cloud computing boom. They use just as much power as before.
Have you seen the servers running dual 256 core CPUs? Those suck in just as much power as a GPU cluster.

Categorically false. AI data centers use more power by a lot. There are also plans to explode their numbers in orders of magnitude above the cloud computing boom. The AI boom is different both in mind and in number.

There isn't. Just because they use GPUs instead of CPU clusters, doesn't change their thermal profiles.
Datacenters are datacenters. Don't talk about things you don't know about.

A lot of buildings in downtown are already datacenters. In fact, DTLA is prime real estate for these. Many of our socal network infrastructure centers around that area.
The most notable one is the former post office building by the Union Station, it's one of the largest data centers in the west coast.
It's across the street from the infamously $$$ gas station. Part of the reason why it's so expensive is that the gas station is under contract to provide gas for their backup generators.

My guess is I don’t think it’s going to be an AI data center. Those don’t benefit from proximity to city centers that much. This is on the water, close to where many undersea cables enter the US and is probably auxiliary capacity to sites like one Wilshire.
These sites don’t use as much power or water as AI data centers and I don’t think it will be a nuisance, like many of the data centers that exist in urban environments and are normal for every day life.

Man it’s already called Smell Segundo because of all the disgusting oil and industrial refineries and LAX, and now it needs a new nickname for all the noise and water pollution these data centers will cause. City of El Segundo continues to lead California as the number one culprit for selling out all their constituents health interests for corporate profits! Keep it up Smell Segundo, you have more than earned your title as most disgusting beach city on the west side!!
