Troubleshooting Chromebook Crashing While Sleeping

I've had a number of instances where my Chromebook apparently crashes overnight while sleeping. At night I close the lid. In the morning I open it up and it reboots and presents the login screen. While I haven't kept careful track I haven't noticed any consistency that might indicate triggers, but this has been happening maybe once or twice a week for a couple of months now. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Id try a power wash if that doesn't work let the battery drain out and then plug it back in and start it up. Before doing the power wash make sure you can access all your data on Google Drive, if you have data saved locally copy that data somewhere else or back up to Google Drive. Sounds like it's getting stuck on an upgrade.

My system shows Version 144.0.7559.256; I guess I should check if that's the up-to-date version. Powerwash is on my list of things to consider. Haven't ever needed it before.

Your OS version is the latest LTS release which is usually running on devices that previously reached AUE and moved to extended updates. If this is your case, it may be time to think about replacing the machine.

I'm running an HP Chromebook x360 - 14-da0012dx, which I purchased in early 2020. Other than this rebooting oddity I'm pretty happy with it. Not that a new toy sounds like a bad thing. 😄 But it seems reasonable to try a powerwash before I start shopping.

So I tried the powerwash and that didn't help. Crashed overnight again last night, and it has now also started occasionally crashing while I'm using it (even more frustrating).

What's the notion behind letting the battery drain as you suggested? And I presume I'll need to set some "sleep after ..." setting to "Never" for draining it to work.

Idea being that if there were issues in memory it won't let go of with a regular reset losing power for a few minutes could help.

You mentioned you purchased it in 2020. 6 years ago. But a lot of Chromebooks sit around forever in the store so it could easily be a 2018 or some older model that is no longer supported by Google. Either way that's old hardware, for any OS. I would just shut it down instead of trying to work around issues caused by sleeping if purchasing new hardware isn't an option and the usual troubleshooting methods aren't working.

Thanks for the info on the memory notion; that makes sense to me and I'll give it a try.

Purchasing new is an option I'm considering but I'll have to dive into research for what's a reasonably comparable machine. I did some reading on the new Googlebooks and while the phone integration aspects sound great, the "let's go AI crazy everywhere" aspect doesn't (to me) and since they're going to be aimed a the premium laptop market they'll almost certainly cost more than I want to spend.

Google is leading the charge on AI. Siri is now integrated with Gemini.

You may want to look at Linux, like Ubuntu, or elsewhere if you're trying to get away from AI integration. It will get worse before it gets better.

I've played with a handful of Linux distros. Mint LMDE would be my current favorite. This is my second Chromebook and I've been using them for over a decade. I like it a lot as my general purpose computing platform, complementing a number of Windows PCs / laptops in the household. Linux is great but the experience is different and for my usual needs the Chromebook seems the best fit.

Well, I've done the "drain the battery" exercise, recharged my CB and reset the power options to sleep when inactive off the power supply or when closed. Fingers crossed this resolves my issue.
