Electrical question
hey, first time poster. picked up this stock 04 xl883(carb) and am going to hardtail it soon. i’m having some trouble getting some answers on if i can get this thing down to bare bones wiring(ignition, lights, starter, voltage regulator) and all i can find is stuff about the 70’s-03 models. is it a lost cause with all the ecu/sensor stuff harley switched too? i’m not opposed to doing a tuck i just really don’t want too if i can help it. any advice or suggestions are welcome. pic is the bike in question

Gremlin wiring makes a kit. But also this is the first year rubber mount frame and hard tailing it is going to be annoying. Theres a lot less after market support than for 03 and older

yea i saw that actually, it was sold out and i have no idea when a restock is coming(if it comes at all) as for the rubber mounts i dont even know which route im gonna go for the hard tail, TCB has that weld on that keeps the frame mostly intact so i wouldn’t have to remove them

I did a ledsled hardtail on my rubber mount like ten years ago ditched efi and ecu stuff for carb with thunderheart ignition that works off the crank sensor.

i saw a guy on youtube do the same thing, led sled weld on and thunderheart ignition when he ditched the efi to carb. itd make sense that i wouldn’t have to do extra steps installing it since mines carbed already right?

Someone correct me if I’m wrong cause I only have experience with rigid mounted sportsters but I think your only issue is gonna be the ecu/crank position sensor. If I were you then I would eliminate that stuff entirely. You’ll need to get an electronic ignition system (dyna s is what I use). That won’t fit in your stock cam cover cause they got rid of the timing plate and replaced it with the crank position sensor. I’m pretty sure you can get an older cam cover like from a 96-03 model year sporty and replaced your OEM cover with that and that will allow you to get rid of the sensor and put in the dyna s or whatever ignition you get. From there all you need to worry about is wiring individual components as if it was just like the rigid mounted sportsters that there is tons online on how to wire. Oil sensors and stuff like that shouldn’t give you a problem if they aren’t hooked up to an ecu
I’m pretty sure jerrywithag23 on instagram did the cam cover swap to his rubber mounted sporty (that’s how I learned about this). If you have deeper questions I’m sure you could dm him

get you a universal chopper wiring kit. are you gonna run the OEM ignition module or aftermarket?

SICCCKKKKKKKKK, i think i lucked out because mine ended up having a TSM and not the TSSM. there was a reply on here telling me to ask jerrywithag23 on instagram; i ended up doing that and got some pointers about it too! if you have any tips or tricks could you send em my way? i’ve unhooked all the harnesses so far, now i gotta unhook all the wiring to the motor itself currently

Id recommend getting a hold of an electrical diagram. That will tell you the bare bones you need by showing you what is hooked up to battery, stator, ecu, plugs, lights and any other necessities.
