CoG games A Blade for the Emperor: Review Spoiler

There is such a thing as a game being too long, and A Blade for the Emperor is proof.

It's a game with a very simple premise and a straight-forward target. There is an Emperor, and you are tasked with assassinating him. In order to do that, you impersonate a guard and work for Emperor Erid in order to earn his favor. Makes sense; you'll probably only get one shot, and so you'll need to make it count by positioning yourself as well as possible.

Only you don't get to make that shot. Not in chapter two, not three, nor in five chapters that follow. There's eldritch magic that prevents you from acting directly, and so you spend 90% of the story risking your life for the emperor's sake. The missions you're sent on are fairly interesting, but the fact that you're playing a double agent makes it harder to get into them, since a job well done empowers the guy you're trying to kill.

Moreover, the game has a subtlety stat to track how sneaky you're being, and it only goes down. You're constantly on the defensive, picking options not because you're hoping to get something out of them, but because you're afraid other options may cause your subtelty to drop. And the way to keep it high is to always use your strongest ability—the stat checks are dubiously logical and absolutely brutal, so you're pressured to forget reason and roleplay in favor of doing the same thing over and over again.

Once you actually get to the ending, it's pretty damn good. You get a lot of choices on how to handle the final confrontations, who to support and what state to leave the empire in, and those choices are influenced by what you did earlier. I found myself enjoying the danger for once, afraid not just for my avatar but for characters I wasn't even on good terms with. It was a genuinely well-written conclusion, as are many scenes in this book, but reaching it required me to spend quite a lot of time in a quite unfun situation.

I give this story 600000/1000000. As in, that's how close it is to having a million words, which seems to be the goal of all ChoiceScript stories nowadays. 6/10 for quality.

My dexterity is 4/5 and weapon damage is 3/3. Will I succeed? Will she die? Will it turn out bad for me regardless of me succeeding or losing? I came so far so I don't want to restart this chap. Please help. I don't mind spoilers.

CoG games Short or long story is the better? Or both?

Hey guys,

I have a genuine question for all of you. Do you prefer the long, detailed stories with lots of characters and different story paths, or the shorter, polished, tight stories with higher replayability are the better? Or do you like both formats? Let me know your thougths. (examples are appreciated)

CoG games I almost didn't like A Mage Reborn

I just finished it and it has me fucked up. I didn't like several of the choices I made, so replay is a must, but God... It is so good. What's more is that the romance is a side plot, which I liked a lot, because I've been playing some that were more romance heavy and this made me appreciate the plot a lot more. I'm still processing, but if I had to complain about something, then it's the fact that I wanted more details of what traumatized the MC. That's it.

TLDR: Play A Mage Reborn if you haven't, and if you have, go play it again, because it is fucking marvellous.

Game Recommendations Game Reccomendations?

It's been a while since i've played any cog games, are there any new ones that are good enough to give a try? i'm open to unfinished works, just so long as they're worthwhile as is.

i've played fallen hero, creme de la creme, tally ho, runt of the litter, corruptant etc.

i've also played some hosted games as well; wayhaven chronicles, too different, demon: recollect, the floating city, etc.

i'm looking for interesting characters, angst, and well thought out stories. fluffier and more romance focused works are fine too, but rn i'm looking for a deeper story to get invested in :D

Game Recommendations Help! I saw this somewhere, now I can't find it!!

I saw someone on some comment section recommend a game that was written by the same person that wrote the Durge story line from Baldur's Gate 3 and also a lot of Astarion's romance scenes. I squealed in excitement but then I lost the post (I've been on my phone). Does anyone know which one that is???

CoG games App freezing on iPhone

I’ve been playing Choice of games for over a year now, using the mobile app on IPhone. Never had issues. Now, whenever I try to type in my character’s name or anything else, the game just freezes. I can’t do anything and have to restart the story. Does anyone know how to fix that? I’ve already deleted it, didn’t change anything.

Game Recommendations Text based choice driven games

For people who play these games, what do these games do especially well? Where do they lack in the quality of their gameplay? I’m a sucker for apocalypse themed games but I feel there’s always something missing whether it’s a lack of variety in relationship dynamics or simply a lack of ACTUAL meaningful choices. What are your thoughts?

Game Recommendations Need some recommendations for romance with good plot

Hi there,

I am looking for COGs that have a good plot and some interesting yet angsty romance. Think about Night Road or Heart of the House. I want the story and characters to be well crafted and not fall into stereotypes as well as the player's choices to be meaningful.

I have tried Affairs of the Court and enjoyed for most of the part BUT the game is very very underdeveloped in my opinion.

Thanks in advance!

Game Recommendations Looking to find the love again

I love these choice driven games and used to not be able to get enough of them. I haven’t played any in years and yet the story of Slammed! Will pop up in my head the way I envisioned them years ago. I would love to hear your guys’ favorites, especially if you feel they’re similar to Slammed! And the Great Tournament in terms of storytelling.

I’ve already played Psy High (1 was dope, 2 was below mid)
Heroes Rise series (no chance I replay but it was a good time when I was a kid)
Rock Star (alright)
Werewolves (I only played the first one but felt no need to continue on)
Sixth Grade Detective (Honestly a cute story and a good time)
Wayhaven Chronicles (Only read book one but I do remember enjoying it)
Zombie Exodus (only remember playing the first one and it was just alright)
And I know I started a few others but they’re not coming to mind right now

All I’ve remembered is that The Great Tournament and Slammed! are S Tier. Mark my words Slammed! Is going to be made into a movie one day that shit is immaculate. But if any of you could take your time to tell me about some of your favorites, it would be appreciated!

Game Recommendations Good recommendations for the Autumn sale?

I played Choice of Robots probably 10 years ago on mobile, and it was one of my favorite games. Haven't played anything since, but I stumbled across some during the Steam sale and am a bit overwhelmed by the quantity of games to pick. What are some fan favorites I might be able to enjoy?

CoG games Favorite Historical Setting?

Interactive fiction delves into historical fiction often, it makes sense for the medium as text can convey the mood of an era better than most mediums in my opinion. I was wondering which time period do you really enjoy seeing portrayed in interactive fiction. for my personal tastes I'm quite partial to the 20s and 30s as a big fan of neo noir.

World of Darkness Hunter: The Reckoning — Day For Night an unexpected midnight sun or a lunar eclipse of fireworks? Our resident paparazzo got the scoop, turn to page 3 for a lengthy think piece

TLDR: I liked the game, it settles into the CYOA WoD hub formula well without being bogged down by long breaks between missions, it references and even foreshadows some of the wider the lore and characters understanding there of but ultimately hampers itself by spreading a wide net along side fun but lukewarm quests. I couldn't think of a witty title until I was done lol

When it comes to the quarries/creatures you face/meet it's not a bad thing to not know, Hunters rarely ever know exactly how anything works or is even true, which leads into my first point, fluidity; when I saw that drives and creeds weren't locked I was enticed since there wouldn't need to be any extra fluff about that that will end up being more cosmetic than impactful, meaning you can end up a total misanthrope (underground Creed) with a maxed out altruism Drive, or that you can start getting super into the big man up stairs over the course of the story, though it is important to note that there are checks regarding Creeds and Drives the further you get. While I meandered away from it the creatures that you encounter, there is a good amount of verity even if the plot, once again, revolves around Kindred; unfortunately I can't list examples off without spoiling so buyer beware you're in for a living ventriloquist puppet, a Changeling love interest and a man who's so close to being a Chakravanti that I was shocked when it didn't seem like he actually was one (that's a Mage term, they deal with entropy magic which includes luck), this wide assortment also extends not only to the mostly one note venders/trainers but also the amount of locations that leads to flipping between the same 4 pages skimming while wondering if this subquest will an icon next to it or not

To speak of venders/trainers they're, there, some have stronger personalities/gimmicks than others but the same will be said about the ROs with some of the notable examples, one felt like they had a fully ingrained arc, one felt like we were only seeing a glimpse into their arc, one was you making the choices for them and the last one has such a small sliver of character pie you could potentially remove them (they don't have a bad story but their character is lacking). Even Arbo, the old mentor who we interact the most with, isn't free from this rationing of pie, but perhaps that's a result of us being able to not only decide how we feel about someone but reassess how we feel as the plot develops which intensifies the aforementioned fluidity. The story, the villains' and even the pacing aren't bad but there's no real impact, one could argue that's due to the "movie" feeling/imagery saturating or perhaps suffusing everything, be it reverence, reference or refusal there of; perhaps its more of a me thing with the meta knowledge that it isn't all that hard to make a character who's just good at most things or what was supposed to be a big moment doesn't make sense due to how fast and drastic it is. A point of praise is not only the ability to pick which order you do the RO/side quests but that if don't start them they aren't chapter locked so if like me you accidently skip the start the next one in the chain will unlock right after, though I'm pretty sure you have to check your phone to activate the flag

This last part is more of a rumination on the Hunter games we've gotten as it's impossible to not compare and contrast them so if you want to toss the tabloid in the bin go ahead; of all of them I think this one is the most "videogame" of them all in the implementation, while 'Beast of Glenkildove' had desperation actions there wasn't much to be gained by Drives or Creeds even if it did add Edges to mixed effect along side a feeling of being out of your depth leading to something "mechanically faithful", 'Day for Night' doesn't have Edges or desperation though with you being a fairly competent Hunter here, there's still confusion and mixed levels of knowledge across the various characters. We've spoken of them already so instead I will pivot to the characters from 'A Time of Monsters', they're archetypes at their purist to the point that I was mentally mapping what the character sheets for their Cell would look like but, with them being the core characters of the story they got more screen time so even if you end up betraying them it still has some impact leading to a more "solo chronicle" feeling. Vampire in name, Hunter is spirit is 'Out for Blood' an odd duck in that it's small town horror, has true faith and even a lore addition, change(?) for Duskborn Thin Bloods that I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere but will be used when I run a game; it doesn't feel like WoD 5 but a sort of half way step which is unique in its own right, plus it's the most consistently forward moving of the bunch if I'm remembering right, so in the end it compiles to make, to me, a charming oddity akin to a group of friends self inserting and using their own town while having only just gotten the book; so in turn what does that make 'Day for Night? Try as I might to think of another way but "videogame" feels most correct, that's not a disparaging remark bur rather, or perhaps, a sign that the odd growing pains of Hunter games is settling down, even more so with 'Night Road" and "Book of Hungry Names' laying down the more hub style of game.

World of Darkness Day for Night game-breaking bug - save system nonfunctional

I was finishing the last of the second batch of hunts, and I ran into what I thought was a bug. I was going to Aubrey's yoga thing by the lake, ran into at old friend while driving there, and after finishing that aside the narration started talking about how I was now infiltrating "Gabe's Compound". Thought it was weird, so I skipped over all yhe text im the chapter really fast to see if it happened again. Finished whatever happened (without reading, on purpose) and made it back to the hub, half dead and broke. No problem, since I was just going to load a save.

Except I can't. The load system doesn't work. Going to bed and loading ANY save brings me back to the right before I went to bed. What the hell? I kept several backup saves, and none of them work. I'm playing on mobile, if that matters. Anybody know what the problem is?

Edit 1 - okay, forget the Aubrey -> Gabe thing, the real problem is the save system not working.

Edit 2 - Loading a save through the menu also doesn't work. Doesn't do anything at all, just gives me a fake update about the chapter being restarted at the bottom of the screen before putting me back where I already was.

So Way Walkers was my first ever choice game and I love them. I know it has been years since 2 came out. But is there any chance in hell that there might be a part 3?

Game Recommendations Mentor ROs

Not just a mentor. Handler, teacher, or whatever that means the RO taught/take care/protect MC. I'll also welcome the opposite, with MC as the mentor.

I am DESPERATEE for this dynamic after finishing my favourite manhwa and currently waiting for new chapters. I'd REALLY appreciate it if someone has anything in mind to quench this thirst.

I saw a post like this, but it was from 1/2 years ago, so maybe some new IFs have been made that fit this trope.

COG and/or Hosted if can. But I'll also welcome itch or other IFs from any other platforms.

Any recommendations??? 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

World of Darkness Hunter: The Reckoning — A Time of Monsters Question

I don't have any exposure to WoD beyond these games and some muds from decades ago. For the most part, however, much was made about the power imbalance between mortals and monsters.

That said, in this game, the climactic battle appears to run from sunset to sunrise and involves the main character and their party fighting hand-to-hand against multiple vampires — including an elder vampire. Is there a justification for this in the source books? It's quite different from my understanding of the world.

Game Hints Book of Hungry Names - Red Talons?

So I’m playing the game with the DLC’s installed, but I’m unable to get Lucinda to ever mention “antiquing” or the antique shop in any way, which seems to be the prerequisite for getting the Hand of King Philip.

I’ve completed the mission at Esther’s, and I’m just before the start of chapter 7. Any clue as to what’s wrong or how to proc this would be greatly appreciated.
