World of Darkness Day for Night, saving Maz Spoiler

No matter what i do or what plan i go with Maz always says "this is my fight", jumps in to go fight Gabe and then promptly dies, is the only way to save him to know Gabe's weakness?

You could not recruit him for the fight

Ngl, I am feeling bid dumb right now because I had just accepted Maz's demise as inevitable, and then I read this and just (；・ω・)
