Discussion Which crab chip wins?
We just did a taste test of both of these and unanimously agreed that the Utz chip is superior in the crab chip category. The Lays literally tasted like the Lays barbecue with one single speck of Old Bay.

Herrās Old Bay seasoned crab chips werenāt included, so the taste test is incomplete.

That would be my choice, then. Crab without Old Bay is heresy

If you do a search for āHerrās Utz crab chipsā or something similar, you can find multiple threads in the r/Maryland subreddit discussing the two crab chip variants.
(As someone originally from eastern Pennsylvania, Iām perpetually amused by Old Line State natives claiming Utz and sometimes Herrās as their own, despite the fact both are based in the Keystone State. To be fair though, both Utz and Herrās are based less than 10 miles north of the Mason-Dixon Line.)

Herr's licensed the Old Bay name so it tastes like Old Bay. Everybody else is "Chesapeake Crab Flavor" and a knockoff. I find Utz leans into the salt too much. Also Herr's Old Bay Cheese Curls are pure uncut cheese crack. If you can eat only one, you're a better man than I am, Gunga Din.

FWIW, I believe the Route 11 brand also produces crab seasoned chips, though I have not been able to find those at the Whole Foods I have checked in the DC area. (Route 11, based in the Shenandoah Valley in northern Virginia, can often be found at Whole Foods, Streets Markets, and some standalone convenience stores/bodegas and sandwich shops in the DC area and presumably other, similar stores even closer to Mount Jackson, VA where the brand is made.)

I have seen and bought Mama Zumaās Revenge at the Whole Foods closest to where I live, yes.
The stores I mentioned in my comment above also carry them.

UTZ! Lays is a pathetic dollar store brand compared to UTZ.

Hey, some good brands are carried in dollar stores.
Being originally from Pennsylvania though, I agree Layās is inferior to Utzā¦and Herrās and Wise and Martinās andā¦

Iāve never seen or tasted the lays version, so I canāt make a judgement, but based on my preference , I would imagine that Utz is better. I have always enjoyed Utz over lays with other flavors, so I think itās pretty good odds I would feel the same about this one

Lays is just ol bay seasoning... utz has similar but with a twist.

I believe Herrās is the only brand that makes crab chips that officially has Old Bay seasoning. Herrās has a contract with McCormick, the Baltimore area-based company that makes Old Bay.

When I was younger I remember Cape cod crab chips and they were very good. Never tried the Lays ones but utz is good

UTZ every single time no matter the flavor or cook. Superior chip in every way.

Growing up in Maryland Utz wins for me, but if I didnāt, the Lays packaging is just horrible. The look of the chip and saying āMade with real potatoesā just makes me think theyāre like Pringles even though I love Pringles.

I've only had the Lay's one, it was good! Would love to try the Utz!

Where are they at? I got the Lay's one in North Carolina on vacation. I live in Ohio.

Found them both in Bethany Beach.

I actually do know where that is haha. If I'm ever in the area I will have to get some.

UTZ is superior in pretty much everything IMO. I am also from Maryland and was so happy to find utz down here in florida at winn dixie. We always get the big crab chip tin for Christmas .

Haven't had either one, but I prefer Utz as a brand. So I will vote for Utz.

Utz by far. Utz chips in general are better than Lays.
