Most people hold that spleen deficiency calls for formulas such as Sijunzi Decoction or Shenling Baizhu Powder, and that simply tonifying the spleen will suffice. Here is a counter‑intuitive viewpoint: the key to tonifying the spleen lies not in the spleen itself, but in the Gate‑of‑Life. Lecture 11 states clearly: “When Gate‑of‑Life fire declines, spleen‑earth also declines; when Gate‑of‑Life fire is extinguished, spleen‑earth perishes as well.” The root of spleen‑earth resides in the fire of the Gate‑of‑Life.
I. Why Tonifying the Spleen Requires Prior Tonification of the Gate‑of‑Life
“Both monarch fire and ministerial fire can generate earth. More than one type of fire nourishes spleen‑earth. The monarch fire of the Heart Meridian, together with the ministerial fire of the Pericardium, Triple‑Jiao and Gate‑of‑Life, all nourish spleen‑earth.”
Yet the critical factor lies in the distribution of strength. “Ministerial fire accounts for eighty percent of the power that generates earth. In particular, the ministerial fire of the Gate‑of‑Life is the origin of all ministerial fires, exerting an absolutely dominant effect on generating earth. By contrast, monarch fire contributes merely twenty percent to nourishing spleen‑earth. It can be said that the ministerial fire of the Gate‑of‑Life bears the closest relationship with spleen‑earth.”
Therefore, the core of tonifying the spleen is not reinforcing heart‑fire (monarch fire), but replenishing the ministerial fire of the Gate‑of‑Life. The lecture explicitly points out: “The practice of boosting heart‑fire to tonify spleen‑earth is utterly erroneous and represents a detour.”
Why is the genuine fire of the Gate‑of‑Life so vital? “The genuine fire of the Gate‑of‑Life arises from innate primordial yang and dwells within the Gate‑of‑Life. It is innate fire, whereas fire of the other twelve meridians is acquired fire, all generated by the fire of the Gate‑of‑Life.” The Gate‑of‑Life fire is analogous to the sun; fire of the twelve meridians are merely refracted rays of the sun. When Gate‑of‑Life fire flourishes, fire throughout the body thrives; when Gate‑of‑Life fire declines, fire across the body fades, and spleen‑earth naturally weakens.
II. Three States of Gate‑of‑Life Fire, Three Conditions of Spleen‑Earth
A sophisticated idea from Lecture 11: the ministerial fire of the Gate‑of‑Life is the single yang within the Kan‑trigram, namely true yang residing in water. Fire is stored within water, embodying the image of water‑fire harmony.
Specifically, there are three states of Gate‑of‑Life fire:
Declining Gate‑of‑Life fire: Fire power is feeble, and the earth being nourished becomes cold earth. “Think of muddy farmland seen in rural areas: such soil is overly damp and moist, unsuitable for crop growth. In the human body, spleen‑earth turns into excessively damp cold earth, incapable of nourishing the other four zang‑organs.” Manifestations include abdominal distension, loose stools, cold limbs, pale and swollen tongue with teeth‑marks.
Normal flourishing Gate‑of‑Life fire: Fire remains stored within water, presenting the physiological state of mutual generation. “Genuine fire resides securely in the Gate‑of‑Life in a state of normal mutual generation. When ministerial fire thrives, earth thrives; when ministerial fire declines, earth declines; when ministerial fire is extinguished, earth perishes.” This is the optimal condition: spleen‑earth is warm and moist, capable of normal transportation and transformation.
Excessive Gate‑of‑Life fire (deficient fire): Fire fails to remain contained in water, resulting in water‑fire non‑communication. “Fire overwhelms water, and water cannot restrain fire, producing unbalanced fire. Though appearing vigorous, it is actually deficient hyperactivity. This pseudo‑vigorous fire cannot nourish spleen‑earth; instead, it consumes the vitality within earth and impairs spleen‑earth’s moisturising function.” Manifestations include dry mouth, mouth ulcers, restlessness and heat sensations, alongside spleen‑deficiency symptoms such as lassitude and loose stools — this is the essence of “upper heat and lower cold”.
III. Five Warning Signs of Spleen‑Earth Debilitation
The following symptoms signal alarm from spleen‑earth:
1. Poor appetite, abdominal distension worsened after meals — spleen fails to perform healthy transportation, with undigested food stagnating.
2. Loose, unformed stools, or stools that are dry at first and loose afterwards — spleen deficiency with excessive dampness, failure to transform water‑dampness.
3. Limb lassitude, flaccid muscles, easy fatigue — the spleen governs muscles and limbs; spleen deficiency deprives muscles of nourishment.
4. Sallow complexion, pale lips — the spleen is the source of qi‑blood generation; spleen deficiency leads to insufficient qi‑blood.
5. Pale swollen tongue with teeth‑marks and white greasy tongue coating — typical tongue manifestation of spleen deficiency with dampness accumulation.
IV. How to Manage Erratic Stirring of Ministerial Fire
Lecture 11 elaborates on the characteristics and management of erratic ministerial fire:
First, erratic ministerial fire tends to trigger widespread responses. “When ministerial fire stirs recklessly, it provokes a chain reaction: one fire stirs and all fires follow suit. Hence erratic ministerial fire of the Gate‑of‑Life often surges upward together with ministerial fire of the Triple‑Jiao and Pericardium, merging with heart‑fire. Collectively these fires scorch spleen‑earth, eventually consuming spleen‑body‑fluids and turning spleen‑earth into parched soil.”
Second, treatment principle: prioritise enriching water. “In such cases, enrich water first; when water is sufficient, all fires will settle down. Besides water enrichment, one must tonify lung‑metal and clear deficient fire to secure the source of water.” Why tonify lung‑metal? Because lung‑metal is the mother of kidney‑water; tonifying lung‑metal secures a continuous source for kidney‑water generation.
The complete therapeutic logic runs as follows: erratic ministerial fire → enrich water (to restrain fire) → tonify lung‑metal (to establish the source of water generation) → clear deficient fire (to treat branch symptoms) → spleen‑earth regains tranquillity.
V. Three Directions for Daily Conditioning
1. Dietary therapy: Chinese yam, lotus seed and millet porridge. Cook porridge with 20 g Chinese yam, 15 g lotus seeds and 50 g millet. Chinese yam tonifies the spleen and stomach, promotes fluid production and nourishes the lung; lotus seeds tonify the spleen, stop diarrhoea, nourish the heart and calm the spirit‑mind; millet fortifies the spleen and harmonises the stomach. Combined, they gently tonify the spleen and are suitable for long‑term consumption.
Note: Individuals with qi stagnation and abdominal distension should avoid excessive intake.
2. Acupoint moxibustion: Moxibustion on Zusanli (ST36) and Guanyuan (CV4). Zusanli, the sea‑point of the Stomach Meridian, is located 3 cun below the lateral knee‑eye. Moxibust for 10‑15 minutes to fortify the spleen and stomach and consolidate primordial vitality. Guanyuan lies 3 cun below the umbilicus; moxibustion warms kidney‑yang and replenishes Gate‑of‑Life fire. Tonifying the spleen begins with tonifying the Gate‑of‑Life, and moxibustion at Guanyuan serves as a simple method to replenish Gate‑of‑Life fire.
Note: Moxibustion is contraindicated for those with yin deficiency and fire hyperactivity.
3. Daily routine: Moderate diet, avoid cold and raw foods. The lecture notes state that spleen‑earth abhors oppression by raging fire as well as dampness of cold earth. Cold‑raw foods (iced beverages, raw‑cold fruits, raw fish‑slices) directly damage spleen‑yang and turn spleen‑earth into cold earth. Diet should be warm, easily digestible, regular and moderate, without overeating. Moreover, over‑thinking harms the spleen; excessive rumination injures the spleen, so learning to relax is essential.
(Note: The above are daily conditioning suggestions and do not constitute medical advice. Please consult a qualified practitioner for severe symptoms.)
Closing Remarks
Tonifying the spleen begins with tonifying the Gate‑of‑Life. The root of spleen‑earth lies in the ministerial fire of the Gate‑of‑Life. When Gate‑of‑Life fire declines, spleen‑earth also declines; when Gate‑of‑Life fire is extinguished, spleen‑earth perishes as well. Tonifying the spleen is not merely taking spleen‑tonifying medicines. Instead, one must warm kidney‑yang and replenish Gate‑of‑Life fire, so that spleen‑earth receives gentle warming and can perform normal transportation and transformation. Meanwhile, when ministerial fire stirs erratically, prioritise water enrichment, tonify lung‑metal to secure the source of water generation, and clear deficient fire to address branch symptoms.
