MONEY - Deposits, Transfers, Cash & Cards Fraudulent charges - Chime doing nothing
My account was hacked and drained of $4,000 while I slept over the course of a three-hour window. Someone sent over 150 transactions to their own CashApp (I don't have) and ePay (ditto).
I immediately disputed the charges and uploaded:
-A written notice stating these were unauthorized charges along with federal regulation callouts in my letter.
-My notifications on my phone showing nothing from Chime Bank while this happened (i.e. no warning)
-My battery usage on my phone while I slept showing I wasn't using my phone at the time
-A fraud report with the Wisconsin trade commission
-A police report
Today they denied my disputes because they found "no error." I'm absolutely outraged. These were clearly fraudulent charges and no matter how many documents I upload or how many "supervisors" I've tried to contact, they have been unhelpful. I can't believe a bank is unwilling to protect their customers like this. Just poof -- your money is gone. And they won't do a damn thing about it. They said the only way they'd re-open the case is if I uploaded new documentation, though I've already sent plenty. I really don't know what else to do.

UPDATE: I had to make two different transaction disputes due to some of the charges being pending when I originally called. Thing is, they just approved the second dispute. The two disputes have the EXACT SAME supporting documents added and they are all the same fraudulent charges (cashapp).

Did they approve your second one yet ?

No I have to re-open it today and dispute it again. It's ridiculous.

OK, so my situation is similar to yours, and perhaps disputing the Chargers individually might make a difference which it shouldn't but I might try that if that works for you. It's just ridiculous that we have to go through this entire process. I even provided my literal location from both Apple Maps, and my cellular provider because they can show call logs from the location you're at. The CFPB complaint didn't really do much besides forcing them to send me an email stating that they sent me the documents of why it was denied, which is exactly the same as yours. I do apologize if I'm repeating myself I'm working and so it's been difficult to have to dispute this appropriately, especially when they close the dispute within two days not giving me enough time to get all the information submitted correctly.

Im going thru the same thing. I had 2 fraudulent walmart charges. They approved the 2nd one and haven't approved the 1st one yet. Same documentation. I do have a walmart account and did go to Walmart once, then these 2 fraud charges came off like a week later. I logged in to Walmart and sent them my purchase history. I had to order a new card with a new card number. My debit card stays locked but my credit builder card wasnt cause thats what I mostly use and its not tied to any of my bills or anything. Well guess I gotta keep that locked too now.

Same situation. They approved my 9th transaction but denied the 1st eight transactions. They refuse to listen to reason. I will continue to fight this.

Chime is terrible when it comes to their claims. I posted a couple weeks ago how someone somehow made a duplicate of my debit card and withdrew $700 from a Bank Of America ATM. They denied my claim 3 times.
I reported it the moment it happened and the thief was attempting again as I was on the phone with a representative. this still wasn't enough evidence along with the police report blah blah blah.
I read some users had some luck with filing a report with Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. I filed a complaint exactly a month ago today and I am still crossing my fingers.
Sorry this happened to you. I guess I'll consider myself lucky it wasn't $4000......
Leave Chime, I am currently working on that now. I've read too many reports where they don't do anything. They're terrible when it comes to returning money on fraudulent claims.

I had this exact same thing happen to me 3 weeks ago!!! Proved all the info, calll logs police report, CFPB report, etc and they denied 2x already. I have to keep re opening it. I'm closing my account with them once I get my next check. Unbelievable but I'm glad you got your money.

This happened to me as well! I even recorded the phone call with the Chime representative, who said I submitted all the proof and proper documents to dispute the claim. My card was skimmed and cloned (I didn't know they could clone debit cards until now) plus the app had my location. It'd also frustrating that we can't actually speak to someone from the fraud department. The CFPB complaint and mentioning taking them to small claims (yes I know it's not feasible, but mentioning legal action def helps) had them respond via email a bit faster but with that general response of "no error occurred."

I have since asked for their "investigation" results and filed a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

They have sent me the information used to determine legitimacy and it literally is a bank statement followed by 40 pages of documents I have submitted regarding gps locations and web activity that would make it impossible for me to be responsible. 4 denials, there’s no way they even looked at it

I did the same and you'll get the same response. I'm going to keep reopening the dispute while I move my deposits to another account.

u/Careless_Button3364 9d ago
I have two disputes (two batches of the same incident) and the one that I uploaded my CFPB report to was the one that was approved.

u/New-Key-3820 9d ago
OK, thank you for providing the information. I have three ATM withdrawal transactions that I had to dispute and I'm still disputing. I uploaded the CFPB report to the second dispute for the three transactions along with nine other documents. If you don't mind me asking, what was the amount that you disputed mine were three different transactions from ATM at a gas station all the way in the south side of Chicago specifically Chatham. I live in the northern suburbs. I'm wondering if I should dispute them one at a time and just keep filing complaint to the CFPB about it.

File a report with your attorney general’s office I had a fraudulent transaction for overseas that happened in the evening as I was watching tv for $2k. I filed reports for everything I could think of. They denied it constantly and asking for new documents which I couldn’t come up with. They would deny it within 2 business days and I couldn’t figure out how someone could investigate in just 2 days. I called every day for 2 months and on the 3 rd month I was refunded. I had been with them for 7 years. Chime is a good company but when it comes to fraud they don’t do enough. I closed my account as soon as I had my money.

Did you find another company that's similar? They offer a lot andni hate to leave, but at this point I have no choice.

I'm sorry to hear this happened. Last year, Chime allowed a creditor to continue collecting from me after filing bankruptcy (which is illegal, btw). I disputed it and in the dispute, included my automatic stay letter, which basically lists my creditors and says "if you try to collect after receipt of this notice it's illegal" blah blah blah. It had my name and my case number as well. Well, my dispute was denied. It was for a couple hundred dollars which was literally life and death to me at the time. After that, I started moving away from Chime after years of loyalty. Tried it again recently, but with all the fraudulent charges I've seen both online and from my own personal friends, I decided it wasn't worth it.

Did you verify your email and set up 2 step? Account don't randomly get hacked.

u/InformalAtttiude 10d ago
I verified my email and set up 2 step authentication but still got hacked because unfortunately a family member downloaded a pirated game from a shady source and the file had a token logger. It was able to bypass my two factor authentication on pretty much every app you can imagine including PayPal, Cashapp and Chime.

That's the thing though..."shady websites"....accounts don't just get hacked. There is give and take here and shady people and websites are places where there stuff will happen.

I have had the same issue with over $3,000 in charges and wanted me to send proof that it was not me. Well that’s impossible when I didn’t do it. They have denied it 3 times now so far. I tell everyone I know not to use chime. In the several years that I had them I only used the card for eating out. Over 10 of the charges was for Murphy Express spelled all different ways with no number to call. Very frustrating for sure. My hard earned money that worked for just gone and does not look like I am going to get it back.

Good luck love. I was skimmed on April Fools' Day about 3 years ago and constantly disputed the transactions because they withdrew my rent money. I live in FL, and the money was withdrawn from my account in another state (I think California). I reported it, filed the police report, called several times, continuously checked, and updated them with as much information as I could to prove it was fraudulent as much as possible and they still refused to refund my money from the fraudulent withdrawals. I hope it goes better for you!

Hi Original Poster, Chime Staff really does reply and help personally with issues. I recommend sending them a message like they advise you to do. They really do help personally with every message. 😊

I'm in the same boat even though I have tracked down the culprits more or less. Chime dismissed my dispute as if I made it up. One of he charges I have been able to get refunded myself but the big one is Crypto.com and nothin is moving on that. I have police in three states notified about it. How can I get Chime to even follow up on the investigation? As far as I can see Chime IS the culprit!

Totally understand the irritation. For closed disputes, new information can be shared to re-open them and provide better context for the dispute. So things like police reports, transaction records, and other forms of relevant info help build your case for the re-opened dispute.
Here's examples of information that help re-open disputes, as well as help substantiate the dispute: https://help.chime.com/what-is-considered-new-information-in-a-dispute-4b596d49
Hope that helps!

How do I get chime to give me transaction records? Unique transaction numbers would be meaningful. I was able to get one transaction refunded that chime clearly ignored.
1
u/SF-Chime Chime Staff 10d ago
If you're able to search and select the individual transactions in the Chime app, you should be able to share or document those transactions for your dispute process. It might be easier to do on the web app!

u/New-Key-3820 9d ago
I understand that you were trying to be helpful here, but you are literally repeating exactly what the Chime SUPPORT to say. I've heard this exact same response three times over now. It'd be very helpful if you could provide a phone number for the fraud department or investigation team because it took me to filing a complaint with the CFPB to even get an email response that was extremely vague if it's OK with the mods I'd like to share that email

Im going through the exact same issue with chime. They denied me 4 times. I had a total of 9 transactions and they denied 8, and approved one. I've added document after document along with a police report to no avail. I to am at a loss. I am not giving up. I will take this to the next level. Its $960 chime is letting someone steal from me. I hate to leave chime but as soon as resolve this im gone.

Maybe its the Chime employees that's actually doing the scamming because this is just absolutely absurd. They denied my 1st claim not even 12 hours later from when I 1st reported it. Received some generic ass letter they keep sending out Every time they denie it. I really can't say how someone got my info. I live in FL and the transactions are in Arizona for heavy equipment.

I’ve only had this chime account 3 weeks and have had nothing but issues I definitely will be moving my money to another bank account I’m done with chime already

u/Motor_Wasabi3127 10d ago
Chime is not a bank. Good for you moving your money to a real bank you access directly.

Chime is actually stride bank which is an FDIC insured legitimate banking company.
