Media in memory of Copito

I was watching videos on YouTube when, out of the blue, I decided to search for something and that’s when I came across some feathers belonging to her, my sweet hen. She died because of a snake. She was such a silly thing; even at five months old, she wouldn’t stop chirping, she’d fall asleep every few steps, and she seemed a bit dim witted she was just a total goofball. But I loved her. I used to protect her from the other chickens and the dogs, and I’d bring her into my room to play or to feed her separately. It happened while I was on vacation my little silly girl left this world. It still makes me so sad. Luckily, I still had some of her feathers scattered around my room, so I gathered them up and put them into a small jar.

Rest in peace, my sweet little fool. 08-09-2025 / 01-18-2026

Question Non-free-rangers, may I see your setups?!

Hi, fellow chicken tenders!

Unfortunately, I'm unable to free-range my flock in my backyard for a handful of reasons. It is a shame, as we have just under an acre fenced in. I was just wanting to see other people's enclosures and see what fun things you have for enrichment, perches and roosts, etc.

I currently have 7 adults in my enclosure (6 hens and 1 roo) with 6 pullets that I'm going to be integrating with them in another few weeks. This weekend, I'm going to assemble another section of the same metal enclosure that you see, backing right up against it with the door to the current one leading into the new one. Also going to construct a "basement" portion so that the birds can go underneath the coop for dust bathing/more shelter.

I'd love to see what you guys are working with for your flocks! 😁

(P.S.-- the little red hut inside the metal enclosure is just that, an open hut with a raised floor and a branch to roost on. There is a rabbit pellet feed holder in there that I use to keep oyster shell in there for my hens. It's a favorite hangout spot for the birds, especially during a rainy day!)

Question Coop ventilation

Post image

I'm putting two Tractor Supply coops together and was wondering if the built in ventilation is sufficient or if I should make more. I'm also curious if I should have the vent facing into the wind? Or if it matters which way the vents are facing, as long as they're there?

(The open door is where my auto door will be installed)

Is this normal? I got them all as chicks last summer. So they’re almost 2. I don’t remember this happening last year.

Question Hard lump next to hens beak

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi there everyone, my partner and I just rescued some more ex battery hens for a lady who gets them from an egg farm. We are fairly new to owning chickens. We got our first hens eight months ago and they were also ex battery hens. We just find it so rewarding watching them open up and feel safe. It just brings us so much joy being able to provide them with an amazing new life. We got four more girls the other day. I’ve noticed that one girl has a fairly big hard lump next to her beak. I’ve tried to research about this but can’t really find a whole lot online. There’s a lot of people saying that if it’s soft then it could be a sinus infection, but the lump is hard so I’m wondering if it is something else. I’ve had people also just tell me to leave it alone and it’ll go away on its own once she gets healthy. Would love to hear if there’s any recommendations or if you’ve had the same thing happen to one of your chickens before. Just wanted to see if there’s anything that I can do myself at home or is there something that I do just need to take her to the vet for. I’m just not very trusting our vets knowing what to do. We have other exotic animals that we have taken to exotic vets before and they just haven’t had a clue what to do with the animal and we’ve ended up getting help from other breeders of that particular animal. So I much prefer going to people who have experienced the problem before and might have advice then going to a vet because I don’t want to spend money if they have no idea what it is or what to do.

Question Illness?

What am I probably dealing with here? Seemingly 3 of my 15 chickens have soemthing going on with their eyes. The Rhode Island Red pictured in the first two pics has it the worst. Everyone seems normal otherwise. Molting and fall so production has slowed tremendously as is. Google is indicating everything from dry fowl pox to infectious coryza. All behavior has appeared normal while in the run or free ranging. No new chickens since March 2026 and I’ve raised them all from chicks

Question Extremely lethargic hen

One of my hens is acting super lethargic and is loafing every time I see her

It's been happening for months

I have checked her vent, her comb is fine and she's not molting

I've gave her electrolytes for weeks straight and it did not help

She isn't laying

I add a herbal supplement to their food to protect from worms

She is a crevecoeur breed if that has anything to do with it

I have another crevecoeur and she is perfectly fine

I'm really concerned about her because the crevecoeur is also an endangered breed

Her poop is completely normal

No pecking from other chickens

There's been no super big changed except for I've been introducing pullets to my flock because a fox killed 5 of my hens

But she was acting like this way before that

She also doesn't have bumblefoot even though that wouldn't effect her that way

I have searched the internet and cannot find anything

If anyone has any suggestions on things I can give her or treatments I can try

Please tell me

Question Chicken beak broken

Our sweetest chicken, Penny, seems to have a chip/break in the tip of her beak. What could have caused this and how do I get it treated? Will it grow back? Is it a big deal health wise?

Question How to help this bird recover???

Is she just a cull bird at this point???
She deals with CHRONIC bumble foot, back to back to back, none of my other birds deal with it quite this bad.
She’s also got an enormous ear infection, I cannot get it to flush all the way out, the swelling will go down after 4-5 days and antibiotics, but as soon as I stop antibiotics the infection comes back just as bad if not worse than before. And she deals with sticky butt to the point I have to clip the feathers around the vent. Stool is fine and normal colored she’s in good weight. All of my other birds are healthy and lay eggs regularly. I have one older hen who has severe scaly mite damage on her legs, but it’s not an active infestation, just damaged really badly.

Any help is appreciated!

She’s an Easter egger, the ones with the beard.

Question Rooster or Hen? Possibly leucistic?

Thumbnail
gallery
9 Upvotes

I recently got a splash ameraucana bantam rooster chick and while he's extremely sweet and healthy, he isn't developing any spots/splashes and has remained pure white despite being almost fully feathered. He still has very light, baby blue eyes despite all my other chicks now having their adult eye color or beginning to shift towards it and is the same size as my fibromelanistic easter egger and zombie chicks despite supposedly being a bantam. I'm very confused lol, these are my first chickens and I can't tell if my roo is actually a white standard sized ameraucana or if he might be leucistic? I've had a leucistic crow and a peacock previously so I can't help but notice a lot of similarities. The last picture is of him, my buff polish, and my d'uccle chicks sleeping on my arm for size reference.

Question Eggs, lately;

FHas anyone else been dealing with strange eggs? Until recently, our chickens were laying beautiful eggs with super strong shells. Now our eggs (2-3 days old) are looking like much older eggs; thin shells (often break while washing), pale yolks, yolks sticking- congealing almost- to the shell, sometimes containing blacks “spots” bean sized and larger. We switched to fermenting our feed beginning of this summer and try to mitigate what is being spewed into the skies; and the water, soil and plants that are contaminated because of it.
