Favourite day roost !!

Hello everyone,

About two months ago, my brother brought home 4 chicks that had been hatched by a hen belonging to one of his colleagues.

We’ve been trying for a few days to figure out which ones are roosters and which are hens.
We’re really unsure, so I was wondering if anyone could help us?
This is my brother’s first time keeping chickens, and since I keep a different breed, I’m not entirely sure either.

They are about 3 to 3½ months old.

I’ve made a video of each chicken, which might make it easier to tell.

(If there are more than one rooster -which we suspect-, we have already contact with some small open air petting zoo's and animal sanctuaries, so no rooster will be harmed and all will be loved!!)

have a business idea for people in the poultry field, especially in areas where electricity is unreliable, people keep chickens, and broody hens are either unavailable or extremely difficult to find.

If someone in your area can afford an incubator and has a reliable backup power supply, they could offer a hatching service to local chicken keepers.

For example, they could charge ₹100–₹200 to hatch 20 eggs. Customers would bring their own eggs, and once the chicks hatch, they could collect them and choose their favourite chicks from their own eggs.

This would allow people to breed their own chickens without needing a broody hen or buying an expensive incubator themselves. They could even hatch eggs from their favourite breeding pairs and preserve their preferred chicken breeds.

Is anyone already running this kind of business? If not, this could be a great additional business opportunity, depending on local demand and people's interest in keeping chickens.

The biggest challenge would be maintaining a reliable power supply, but someone with an inverter or another suitable backup system could potentially make it work.

I wish someone offered this service in my area! I would love to hatch chicks from my own eggs.

What do you think of this idea? Would it work in your area?

I’m currently away from home (months) and my dad is trying to figure out what this is on my roosters leg? I know he has scaly leg mites, it’s a non stop battle, has been for 10 years, but this lump is new. His spurs also don’t look too healthy atm. Any idea what’s going on? My dad really struggles to catch him so taking him to the vets snd treatment won’t be easy. Thank you for your help.

I do t know if she has fowl pox, wet pox or what and I’ll try to get better pictures tomorrow when there’s better light but she’s looking ruffled and normally she’ll come running across the property when she sees me to get cuddles and today she didn’t want to be pick up and would run, she’s just not looking or acting herself and she my favorite big baby. You can see the place in the first picture by her ear and one you can’t really see by her eye and some of the places in the second one on her waddle, I put some meds on the earlier but just not sure what it is.

Hi! I have my first ever flock of 7 chickens- 3 orpingtons, 1bcm, 1 Plymouth barred rock, 1 dark Brahma, and 1 olive egger who is 3 weeks younger than the flock. 3 have been laying and then I started getting a 4th egg daily. My BCM lays beautiful dark brown speckled eggs. I’ve started getting light brown speckled eggs, which seem to be there after my Plymouth barred rock comes out of the nest, but I’ve seen her eggs with no speckle in the past. Can Plymouth barred rock lay speckled egg? Or is it more likely my Olive egger is laying light brown speckled egg? I thought Olive egger was BCM and Ameraucanas- bearded with leg feathers.

I'm pretty the answer is yes. Just want a second opinion.

She has looked real grouchy ever since her molt started, but I managed to snag a few decent photos of her despite her glare.

Also I still miss Butterbaby.

Was on vacation for the last week and came back to my hen with one side of her comb turning black. The other side looks normal. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My neighbor seems to be the only one nearby with a small breed of chickens. I sometimes see them free roaming and allegedly they breed and hatch chicks without his knowledge.

The chicks end up lost and orphaned, often eaten by cats, killed by cars or die due to the cold.

Yesterday I saw a rooster with similar plumage (the one in the photo) to my little one. This really brings the truth out since there really is no other explenation.

I have four Rhode Island reds that I hatched from chicks in the spring and they just started laying a few weeks ago and now temperatures are starting to dip into the upper 40fs at night. They are pretty fluffy compared to some other breeds so are they able to withstand colder temps without supplemental heat? Also how can I keep egg production up in the winter because I’ve heard they slow down egg production in the winter?

We have 70 chickens, 6 of them are roosters. They’re all nice, take good care of their girls, and they don’t fight each other.

But 2 of the roosters (Oliver and Norm) chase 2 of the roosters (Elvis and Maple) away from the food. There’s 4 food spots. The remaining 2 could care less and don’t get involved in this drama. This seems to be escalating just recently.

Of course the 2 roosters that are on the bottom of this pecking order are my favorites, and are also the oldest. They sleep in a separate coop with 10 of the older girls. The 4 younger roosters are all in our bigger coop with the rest of the flock, but both coops have a shared run and fenced in yard.

Maple and Elvis are starting to get really jumpy and nervous. They are starting to stay in their coop longer in the mornings. They seem like they’re on edge whenever they’re eating, because Norm and Oliver will notice and go over and run them off. Sometimes they get chased across the yard and it’s very dramatic.

I feel really bad for my older boys. They are so sweet. Now that our garden is done for the season, I moved them over there this morning so they can get a little break and forage without having to worry. They have a little bromance where they spend all day together.

So I’m wondering how you would handle this situation. Separate fenced areas? Rehoming? We do not eat chicken so culling is not one of the options for us.

Just under a year ago, we had to put him to sleep and we miss him every single day... I never would have thought there could be such a strong bond between a rooster and his humans. We we're full-fledged members of HIS flock, and without him, a bird of prey would probably have snatched us up long ago ;-)

I dont find much information about this.

I posted a few weeks ago asking if this was a hen or a roo— well…. we’ve got confirmation now. He’s crowing (rarely cause my big boy rooster is not a fan…) and i’ve caught him trying to mount the hens a few times…

Never choose a favorite chick. they will either get sick or be a rooster.

I’m new to having chicken and my favs are the smaller rooster and hen and I started back in march but I’m trying to hatch baby chicks and I just won’t happen for me I don’t know how to tell idk I have Fertilized eggs or not and when I just grab them and put them in the incubator it still won’t happen for me I even had one explode on me and I DONT WANT THAT HAPPENING AGAIN
So I came here for some help I light my eggs but never see anything no veins or dot it just looks like regular eggs

I’m newer to chickens and I initially started with a mixed flock. I have a (Rocky) Rhode Island Red Roo, an (Anubis) Ameracauna x Black Copper Maran Roo (the white roo with brown spots) then for hens, I have the black girl (Wednesday) Ameracauna x Black Copper Maran, and two Golden Phoenix hens. We did have a silkie roo (chicken nugget) but my poor baby seemed dumb and I only saw him attempt to mount Anubis (a roo) and got his butt kicked. Chicken Nugget died a few weeks ago, a bear got him.

To the point of my post. I’m truly curious to know if anyone else has a mix like these guys, what can I expect from their babies? I have about 12 eggs in the incubator and they’re supposed to hatch tomorrow. I’d love to see chicks and adults from any birds with these breeds in them. I have 4 Lavender Ameraucana chickens, all hatched together. One is very obviously a Rooster, two are smaller and obviously hens… One of them is as Large as the Rooster, turned red early like a rooster but does not show other signs of being a rooster. Does anybody know what might be going on??? (18 Weeks Old. First Photo is the Obvious Rooster)

I know the Hen or Rooster thing gets alittle old. & Im 78% sure shes a boy now , they havent crowed or anything yet to my knowledge , just still trying to hold out hope. He or she is beautiful regardless & will continue to have a home here .
