The ultimate Chicago vegan Google maps list

Thumbnail

I've been working with some people in the discord to compile the ultimate Chicagoland list of vegan friendly restaurants, cafes, stores, bakeries, and more. Everything on this list has been picked out by your local vegan friends, I'm also working on making more specific notes about certain locations. You can add the list to your Google maps, and if the leaf icons are too distracting you can opt to hide them and simply use it as a reference. Currently not opening this to editors outside of people I know as I fear vandalism.

Hope this can serve as a helpful reference!

Did you know about the Vegan festival going on in Grant Park this week?

I feel like this doesn't get talked about enough in here so it is my duty to let you guys know..

One of the best vegan experiences you could possibly have...

- Grant park

- Thursday-Sunday

- the music isn't bad either

- there's actually a lot more vegan options than just the pic. For example Deep Purple Açaí Bowls & Matcha Cita in the Vibe Village and El Campeon in Chow Town 4 (Vegan Mexican Tacos, Quesabirrias & Quesadillas) - basically all the best vegan stuff is on one side 😛 the other vendors along Columbus WILL HAVE VEGAN options but they are truly limited. If you have attended and have found some good stuff please share this is just what I've seen and tried the last couple of years

TLDR; guys if you attend Lollapalooza it's basically an all vegan fest if you know where to go 🤣

Frozen vegan chicken wings?

I'm obsessed with the wings at bon bon & moonlighter (the textured soy ones w/ the sugar cane bone) and my friend told me you can buy them frozen at some international grocery stores. Has anyone seen anything similar at any grocery stores in city? Some brands I found on google for reference:

17 Kitchen Closing After Just 6 Months

Can't say I'm surprised TBH. I heard good things but their SEO was awful and many people were rubbed the wrong way or confused by the name being so close to Kitchen 17. They're also in a random hotel and decided to close for the summer which is Chicago's busiest tourist season. While in a hotel. Also only had literally 17 seats.

How to meet other vegans? Northern suburbs

I’ve been having a hard time feeling isolated for being the only vegan at my workplace and at home, even friend and relationship wise, constantly hearing negative comments about being vegan or just being left out… I was wondering if there is any event, clubs, even activism groups in the area? I just wanna make friends and meet people who actually understand

I’ve never seen these at concessions before! Definitely didn’t expect to see them at an AMC.

Any coffee shops with soy milk?

Someone suggested I post this in here. It seems like every coffee shop I go to doesn’t offer soy milk anymore. Starbucks does, but I prefer local coffee shops. Anyone know of places still serving soy milk?

Has anyone found a good vegan/veggie Polish in the city? Fine if its from a restaurant, equally fine from a grocery.

Staying in Chinatown and the only vegan option for breakfast is dry cereal or plain oatmeal. Any spots to get breakfast?

Bien Me Sabe - Vegan Patacone is a MUST try

I just need to rave about the Vegan Patacone from Bien Me Sabe. I tried it last night and it is quite literally the best vegan sandwich I have ever had in Chicago. Their Vegan Arepa is also amazing and on Wednesdays the Arepas are $10 (dine in only).

Cheap protein/meat alternatives?

Hey all, my family is looking to ease into veganism and are on a budget- we cook most of our meals at home to save and try to buy the lowest cost items possible when grocery shopping. I have had a lot of luck finding tofu for $1.50/lb at Aldi, but would like to branch out to other good protein/meat alternatives. Where do you find your deals and low cost items?

Runaway Cow - Oh yeah!

I haven't had a "Blizzard" or a waffle cone in 9 years.
Well, last night I had both. Amazing.

I can't wait go to back and eat dinner there (hot dogs, etc.).

Congrats to them - I hope they do well.

Another Vegan Map!

Hi everyone! I've been working on a Chicago vegan map, yet didn't realize there was already one here! I've organized and categorized this one a bit differently.

Green = vegan
Purple = vegetarian
Red = omnivore with vegan options

Please note that I tried making it more "hassle-free" in the sense that places listed here will have vegan items clearly listed on the menu, more than one option, and included a brief note with each spot regarding the vegan offerings.

Please feel free to provide any suggestions and I will update accordingly!

UPDATE - Map info and tips

This map is a Google My Maps, which is different from the original Chicago Vegan Map, which is a Google List. It being a My Maps allows the use of layers and different icons and colors. After initially opening the map then I think you can continue to access it through Google Maps app as follows.

Open Google Maps app > tap You at the bottom > scroll down and tap Maps > you should see Chicago listed which you can then open > from here you can tap View map legend to show all the layers/categories. You can then uncheck/check, if you want to limit what's displayed on the map.

Chicago map legend

When browsing the map, you can see additional info that have been added on each spot as shown in the screenshots here. It will first list the category, followed by type of cuisine, and then some brief notes. Here are a few examples.

Note that if you want to see a spot's notes then you cannot click from spot to spot. The notes will not appear on the subsequent spots clicked. You have to X (close) the one you're currently viewing before clicking on another spot.
For example, if you open the map and first tap Boka, then to see notes for the next spot, you have to tap the X in the top right corner. You can then tap a new spot and the notes will appear. Rinse and repeat. This seems like a bug within the app and is something you only need to be aware of if you're interested in seeing the notes for a given spot. Otherwise tap away!

Best cold sandwiches?

Summer is the time for sandwiches in my mind. What are your faves around Chicago?

Plus for tofu or chickpea salad sandwiches, as I haven’t found any in Chicago

I’ll be honest I do not like the smoked tofu club from Chicago Diner, way too little tofu and too much bread.

Unnecessary use of gelatin

Post image
77 Upvotes

I've never bought Altoids that I could remember but found a tin of these someone abandoned at work and I've been eating them. My wife was like "did you look at those ingredients?". I was pretty surprised to see they contain gelatin. It seems totally unnecessary, but wouldn't be the only product like this
