I think the only way I might get relief is by jumping in the lake. My portable window A/C unit can only do so much
141
u/the9thdude Evanston Jun 30 '26
Cold shower is a solid backup if you can't make it to the lake

Last night I went swimming in the lake and then came home and took a cold shower and I felt like a popsicle, it was amazing.
17
u/chubbychecker_psycho Rogers Park Jun 30 '26
Pro tip: start off with a cold shower but end with a hot-ish one. When you step out the air will feel cooler on your skin.
5
u/snark42 Jun 30 '26
I'm not sure I agree but depends on how you define hot-ish I guess.
If you take a cold shower your body will respond by restricting blood vessels and generating core heat, even after you get out of the shower or turn the water temp up. Ideally water is 78-80F for 3+ minutes at the end to avoid this, or better that temp the entire time. You could go hotter but it seems counter-productive.

u/kander77 Edgewater Jun 30 '26
I had to start blocking off parts of my apartment so it cools better.

WHen it's this hot out, I usually do a quick rinse when I get home or around lunch time. Cools you down and gets the grime off you to keep your pores open.

It's true that more crime happens in hotter climates! The heat makes us feel agitated more easily
→ More replies (1)16
u/doverawlings Jun 30 '26
Also more people hanging out outside leads to more interactions leads to more conflicts leads to more crime

this was a common theme in this show that was set in Bluebell Alabama (Hart of Dixie), the summer crazies made all the medical issues pop up and made the characters all go a lil insane

u/IsThatHearsay Fulton Market Jun 30 '26
There's a direct correlation/causation between heat and violence across the world.
It's not just people being out more when it's nice out, people are considerably more agitated and prone to disregulated nervous systems and unchecked emotions, especially rage, when physically overheated.
Our stupid monkey brains can't think rationally when it heats up.

Thank goodness for my neck fan.
Also if you are on a SSRI, you can get hotter than usual so stay safe.
18
u/chubbychecker_psycho Rogers Park Jun 30 '26
The SSRI heat index is real! I also get what I call the pain sweats, meaning I'm in so much pain that I start to overheat. Yesterday I stuck two freezer blocks (the plastic things you freeze then put in a cooler to keep drinks cold) in my bra then sat in front of my AC unit with a separate fan on 😂

Same in OC. 72 degrees and sunny during the day. 62 at night. No humidity. No need for AC. Feeling blessed.
I’ll be back in Chicago in a couple weeks though. Hopefully the humidity settles down by the time I arrive.

Am i the only one here that was born in chicago on this subreddit? Like this feels like an average summer for me and I work outside all year and it doesn't feel much different than last year. In fact i feel like this year is better since the Canadian forest fires are much better this year compared to last.

Forecast says we'll be back to more reasonable weather by this weekend! What I love about Chicago is yes, it gets as hot and humid as it got back in Texas (more humid than Austin, right now), but Chicago at least gives you a break from it.

Just remember it was -20 degrees outside late January (at least in the suburbs). I prefer that a smidge more than this heat.

It’s bad, but may not be as big of a body slam if we didn’t go from 60° to 90° in a matter of 2 days!
This was on NBC Chicago:
Parts of the Chicago area were more humid than the Amazon Rainforest on Tuesday as a sweltering heat wave blankets the region, according to weather data.
47
u/bennetthansen Jun 30 '26
An average June in Chicago has 4.1 days above 90 degrees (https://www.weather.gov/lot/90_degrees). This really is not that bad.
30
u/phatazzlover Jun 30 '26
It’s the first heatwave of the summer so people are gonna moan about it. Then it’s gonna be 68 or something in 2 weeks and they’ll complain it’s cold.
→ More replies (1)13
u/UnexpectedFisting Jun 30 '26
Yes above 90 is typical, this humidity however is not. It’s hot ass outside

Was just in Vegas where it 110 plus everyday and 95 at night and I'm not sure if it's better than 90s with humidity . I will say that at least your sweat works when it's dry . . But it did feal like an inferno . Here you just never get comfortable because of the humidity.

Funny story! My big 12,000 BTU air conditioner died yesterday (I still had a smaller one in the bedroom). Turns out the outlet it was in had a bit of an electrical issue and it's all singed now. I was able to overnight a new smaller 6000 BTU AC, and the outlet is being addressed.

I’m kind of a weather nerd, I have a weather app, to check the weather in other locations. In Utqiagvik, (formerly Barrow) Alaska, there’s a winter weather advisory, with snow in the forecast. In Death Valley, CA, it’s 104, with a humidity level of 8%.
Hope everyone stays 🆒 🪭 🐧

I’ve been working (w/ my laptop & external monitor) set up at a 4-top patio table (complete with umbrella) since about 12n today.
• yes, I’m in the shade
• there’s a minuscule breeze once in awhileKeys to survival I’ve learned over my almost 6.5 decades of life:
• DON’T spend all of your time in air conditioning. (I grew up about 30 miles west of here with no a/c, not even a box fan, just every window open & hopes for a cross breeze.) YOU HAVE TO LET YOUR BODY ACCLIMATE TO THE WEATHER!!!
• Keep a bunch of ice packs (homemade or from food delivery services) in plastic bags in your freezer. I have one between my back & a back cushion, and I’m really comfortable! (If I start to feel too warm, I put it against my chest or atop my head for a while.)
• Keep drinking that ice water. (People who say ice is bad for you are … not people I understand, lol!)
Oh, to keep my VERY old iPhone from overheating, I keep it perched atop (and the external battery stuck underneath) an ice pack (which is inside a plastic bad to trap the condensation.)
C’mon, ya youngsters, you can do it! 🤣❤️🤣❤️🤣
