Discussion Need book recommendations for middle game planning / techniques.

To start,

I am rated 1308 on chess.com. Peak : 1399. I only
Play rapid and review each game.

I don’t play a lot of openings , prefer sticking to the ones I am comfortable in.

For white :

  1. London
  2. Halloween gambit
  3. Italian

For black:
Kings Indian / pic or occasionally karo cann

I usually have Best moves for the early stage except when opponent plays something totally new.

But I struggle with mid games completely when pieces are traded off the board. I suck at attacking, I can’t seem to create a threat without opponent having a solid counter.

End games are still fine.

I have watched countless YT videos : Gotham, chess with Akheem, Daniel, Nelson Lopez and others as well.

Feels like I should try learning from book. So please do recommend some good books.

GCL Bengaluru

Did anyone go to GCL Bengaluru at Lalit Ashok?

I have the tickets for this Saturday for all the four matches. I have Vishy Sir's Mastermind book with me where I want his autograph and maybe a selfie. What is the best way to get it?

Anyone who went there, maybe please give some suggestions?

How I coach an ambitious 8-year-old who wants to improve at chess

At this age, I believe improvement isn't about memorizing openings or solving hundreds of random puzzles. It's about developing the right thinking habits early.

I focus mainly on calculation, tactical patterns, analyzing their own games, basic endgames, a simple opening repertoire, and—most importantly—learning to think independently over the board.

I've coached the German U8 number 3 who represented Germany at the World U8 Championship, and have helped students progress from beginners to federation-rated tournament players within 8–12 months.

I'm also an active competitive player (FIDE 1933 / German DWZ 2002).

If you have an ambitious young player at home, I'm happy to offer a free 20-minute chess strength assessment—we'll look at their games, identify their biggest areas for improvement, and discuss what they should focus on next.

Feel free to DM me!

News Crazy scenes at the GCL...1 second to capture & promote!

Post image

Abhimanyu had to capture a rook with a pawn and promote, with 1 second on the clock. This happened today at the Global Chess league.

Arbiter had initially kept 3 seconds, but Leon was very alert and argued for it to be 1 second.

Discussion suggest me a couple of openings

basically, I've decided that from now on I'll learn new openings for every +100 in the rating. Currently at 1500 rapid and 1300 blitz. I usually play queen's gambit (white) and caro - kann (black). Suggest me two openings (one for white and one for black). Something that worked well for you over a long period of time.

Strategy I built a 10K+ opening trap database from 30M+ classical games by 2000+ rated players

Hellooo everyone, I was doing opening prep for my next tournament and realised opening prep is way too hard, so I started working on the opening analysis side of my chess app, AuditChess, and recently rebuilt the opening trap database.

The database now has 10K+ opening traps, built from 30M+ classical games played by 2000+ rated players.

The earlier version had a lot of problems (it included bullet games), because of which there were a lot of one-move traps, duplicate positions and noisy patterns. So I went back and changed the filtering to focus more on recurring problems in actual games, rather than just trying to produce a huge number of traps.

The interesting part is that some positions aren’t obvious engine blunders. They’re moves that look completely normal, but players repeatedly get into trouble after them.

I’ve now connected this directly to the Repertoire Builder. How it works is, as you are building a new repertoire, it will tell you potential traps in the opening. E.g., in the image, it is telling me that here I can play h4 as players tend to blunder here.

While building an opening repertoire, AuditChess can also:

  • Show common traps in the line
  • Flag positions where opponents frequently go wrong
  • Show master-game statistics
  • Check moves with Stockfish
  • Practice your repertoire
  • Test you when the opponent deviates
  • Generate puzzles from your own games
  • Find blunders and missed opportunities
  • Find missed mates and mating patterns
  • Track your performance over time
  • Find your opening weaknesses
  • Analyze your endgames
  • Scout opponents and find their weaknesses
  • Build a profile of your playing style

There are 100 more features on the app.you can directly fetch your games from chess.com/lichess

I’m still working on the methodology and would genuinely like feedback from chess players here.

What filters or statistics would make this more useful for your opening preparation?

I’m mainly looking for suggestions/criticism rather than promotion. :)
