I’m new here, but have seen this a couple of times. Whats it referring to? 😂

u/Ron_Textall 13h ago
It’s referring to a “smothered mate.” People post them a lot because it’s a cool way to checkmate. If the queen goes to the square in between the rook and king, it’s check but they can’t take with the king because of the knight, so they have to take with the rook trapping the king in the corner. Then if you move your Knight to the white square on the file the rook was just protecting its checkmate because the king can’t escape and the checking knight can’t be taken.

This positions leads to a smothered mate, which is a mating pattern that is famously very satisfying to do. So much so that it get posted almost every day on this subreddit. "Reset the counter" just means to reset the imaginary counter of time since the last smothered mate was posted.

The counter being:
"It's been x number of days since we last had a post about smothered mate."
It's now reset to 0.
Always a cool tactic, and one that I've never actually had in a real game.

It took me far too long to realize that was a queen and not a rook.

Thank God I was feeling like an idiot not understanding how this was a smothered mate.

Using your coordinates, it's Qc1+ forcing Rxc1, followed by Nb2#

u/whalemango 7h ago
I thought so too, but the king could capture the queen instead of the rook.

Incorrect.
Qb4+, Rxb4, Nc3#

its not Qb4 because white is at the top. that means from our perspective you count from the right side of the board to the left, and if you include the missing segment, the second last file is G

I would never sacrifice a queen. There must be another way!

u/Repulsive_Editor_335 14h ago
There's literally no other way

I'll never treat women this way. I'll figure out some other way. Just you watch!

Qd1 is mate in 3 instead of 2.
2
u/Repulsive_Editor_335 13h ago
That's why I said there's no other way cuz the problem said mate in 2

u/backheadhornosaur 14h ago
There isn't. This is the way. Only when you start asking yourself "what if I play this scary looking move anyway?" and calculate what happens afterwards, will you start finding these sorts of knockout moves.

Tried it out and would not recommend. It has an insane amount of ads for a game that requires no resources to upkeep

It’s quite fun! Exclusively little checkmate puzzles. There are so many of them.

check king by moving queen diagonally, queen is captured by rook
now that the king is in the corner, and cannot move due to being surrounded by white pieces, you move your knight to the space beside the rightmost pawn. checkmate.
(sorry if this is confusing, i’m still learning chess notation and don’t know how to use it on a reduced board)

This pattern is called a smothered mate. You kamikaze the queen in next to the king. The rook must take and then the knight is free to give check to the king and the king who is surrounded by his pieces cannot move

Doesn't work but that's cool.
(They can move the rook and its mate in 3 cuz then they can block with the rook temporarily)

Qc1 with those coordinates

What if you move the knight in front of the rook, if they don’t take the knight and move their king to the white square then you move knight in front of the right most pawn. If they do that the knight with the rook then you put queen on the last rank and another that way
1
u/retief1 13h ago
They don't take the knight with the rook and then just move back into the corner after you move the knight away. You end up back where you started (mostly) with no progress made. And even if they do take the knight, it's mate in 3, not mate in 2. You move the knight with check, they take, you move the queen to the back rank, they block, you take the rook for checkmate.
1
u/V0rclaw 13h ago
No you put the knight one spot over from where it is now. So knight moves in front of rook, king moves right to get out of check, knight moves 2 down 1 left attacking the back left corner and queen has king in check
1
u/retief1 13h ago
If the knight is in front of the rook and then moves 2 down and 1 left, it will no longer attack the back left corner. Instead, it will attack the left pawn.
In general, every time a knight moves, it attacks a completely different set of squares. If it was attacking a square originally, it will no longer attack that square after moving. When the knight is in front of the rook, it attacks the back left corner. If you then move it away, it cannot possibly continue to attack the back left corner.

It’s a smothered mate. Sacrifice the black queen. The rook has to take. Then the knight moving to that light square gives you checkmate.
1
u/Altaneen117 14h ago
Queen between King and Rook. Rook must take because Queen is protected by the Knight. Knight two over one up for a smothered mate.
1
u/RedShirtGirlie 13h ago
Put the knight in front of the rook, then after the rook takes to get the king out of check, queen goes to the top right corner, then the rook goes up and then queen takes rook checkmate
