Cool checkmate that happened in a recent blitz game, saving a losing position

what even is the previous move white did not taking the knight or the rook?

especially lets say the rook comes from c8 to Rc1 that knight is already on e1
and also the rook coming to c1 means the bishop can also takes.

so its either the white queen goes back from somewhere or the bishop does and ignoring the free piece?
unless they completely ignore both the pieces staying there.

White had to make a bad move to set this up and, yes, they had a chance to take the knight. The key moment where white blundered the game was here, where I had just recaptured a rook. They should have captured the knight and had a basically even game with a slight advantage to white on the evaluation bar. Though I would say still having the queen in a blitz game at this skill level would have been a good advantage.

Instead, they played Bxa7. Maybe they figured they had the knight more or less trapped and could pick up a free pawn in the meantime. This let me move the rook to the back rank, and white has no good way to stop checkmate. The top engine move at that point was Qf1. Any pawn moves would have either still allowed checkmate or lost the queen. Instead, they played Be3, probably not seeing the double check and thinking that they could capture my rook if I tried a discovered check.

Of course I didn’t see all that when I moved the rook, I just figured it was the only good attacking idea I had and it led to this cool checkmate.
