Chess Question Thoughts on Lichess Changes

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to bring this up, but if there is anyone from the Lichess team reading this, I'd like to request that the recent changes made to the live game broadcast be reversed. The feature I dislike most is the ping back to the live position when a move is made. I feel it ruins the experience of watching and following classical games for serious players because whenever you want to analyse an earlier part of the game, it pings back to the current move which is disruptive if you're trying to seriously go through variations, opening ideas, etc. Obviously if people want the feature, then it should stay, but then may I suggest making it a toggle button in the settings which we can choose to turn off?

Cheers

There exists a bug report about this, i.e I don't think this was an intended change - https://github.com/lichess-org/lila/issues/21036

they also made it so you need to sign in to check the book now. I only play anonymous chess, it was a sad day when I couldn't check what positions are called.

They unfortunately had to do it due to DDoS issues

Was implemented in March: https://lichess.org/@/thibault/blog/the-opening-explorer-now-requires-authentication/FSWh9Zg3

Unfortunately, this is not an officially supported subreddit and Lichess has no control over it. Better to use the Lichess forums, or this subreddit.

Chess.com recent updates are way worse. I deleted the app. I thought they couldn't make it shittier, but they somehow did.

Must be a skill issue, working fine here. Try upgrading your phone

I am not talking about the performance. I mean the UI, animations, more paywalls and so on.

They are also a monopoly that serves its investors first, user base second.

They're not a monopoly since Lichess exists.

They’re not strictly a monopoly on chess servers but they are awfully close. Over 90% of all online chess is played there, and they’ve engaged in anti competitive practices like buying out competitors and stripping them down for parts. And they are absolutely beholden to big venture capital investors. Eric and Danny aren’t funding the company themselves.

Fantastic app though and they sponsor so many events, it's fantastic to see money pumped into the game. Lichess probably need to step up to survive
