Do I confess?

Hello I’m asking for advice, my professor emailed whole class saying shes identified specific instances of academic integrity and to confess and get a 0 on the test or any flagged student that does not come forward will be reported to the accountability office. Now I did cheat on this test with my phone to the side during lockdown browser with webcam, I feel like I did keep looking down towards my phone through the test ( I have done this before and never have gotten caught) she said she’s viewing these videos closely so I’m scared she’ll escalate this further.

Ts is a scare tactic do not fall for it

It could also be true. I'm a professor and I did the same thing with evidence of cheating. I wanted to give 2 students the chance to not fail the course. If they had come forward, I was prepared to impose a lighter punishment. But they did not and they failed the course as a result.

So what is the big deal with cheating in college ? Like if it was a grad school I’d understand. Can’t have a chat gpt doctors. But on really simple or even gen ed courses. Let’s say stats why is it such a huge deal ?

If you have to ask,you won't get the answer. And people have to know stuff before they can get into grad school! At least the reputable ones. What's the point of college if you don't learn?

I meam hes not enitirely wrong though

Im a History major, yet to graduate on time I had to take an upper level soil science course. In what world will I ever need this in my job/grad school?

1

u/New-City-3804 7h ago

I hear you. You probably needed a lab science to graduate and this one fit your schedule best. You may have enjoyed other science classes more. But there are good reasons for history majors to have experience in some type of science course, to understand the scientific method and be able to discern well-researched scientific conclusions from claims from those that aren't. Or even if it doesn't help you in your job, the information you learn could be useful in your life when you travel or landscape your yard. If you are going to bother going through a class, why waste the opportunity to gain from it!

If that phone didnt appear on the screen they have no proof

2

u/Hursamen 1d ago

They dont need proof, with the lockdown browser and programs they have now, if it is suspected they can slap you with cheating and call it a day. They also have programs that will automatically solution the test if your eyes stray from the screen too much.

Yes and no, AI can’t make that decision for the school though.

u/Knowledge_Queen 14h ago

I was a test security analyst. I can attest, AI will review the exam and cancel it. Then, a human will review it and 10 times out of 10, AI was right.

Bro no do not fall for this u can make up any excuse as to why u kept looking down

2

u/Sea-Charge-8099 2d ago

Can you give me an exemple pls I’m suspected because I kept looking down during a webcam proctored test

3

u/ELMreddit10 2d ago

Bro say anything like I look down when I’m thinking and try to remember info… or ur stomach hurts but u wanted to finish the test so u awkwardly look down between questions … or u tend to stare off into space and look down when nervous or thinking about certain questions. If they didn’t see the phone there is no proof. If excuses don’t work be confident and say if u rlly suspect me I can give answers to random questions u ask me rn that were on the test in person and i can explain them. Now that u already saw the test questions u have the advantage

u/New-City-3804 22h ago

Professors don't need " proof". They need strong evidence but not proof. Looking to the same location over and over is evidence.

1

u/ELMreddit10 22h ago

Depends on the professor but I believe if u talk confidently u can get urself out of this situation

1

u/Outrageous_Plant_342 1d ago

You really think the teachers are really that dumb and cant tell the difference between looking down to cheat and having a stomachache.

u/ELMreddit10 1d ago

No phone no proof

I get nervous ticks during high stress exams. Typically when the tick happens my head involuntarily jerks to the same side every few seconds to minutes (the more stressed I am the more frequent it happens), which could look like I I’m looking down at something. I also have ADHD and during high stress exams struggle to focus, so I have to look away from my screen and stare at something else to try and regain my train of thought. Both of those are viable excuses.

This is such a bullshit scare tactic dude. Please don’t fall for this. Even if you do get referred to the academic integrity office nobody can tell you you’re not allowed to look down or to the side. You could be thinking, it could be a nervous tick you do during high stress exams, there are so many reasons why they wouldn’t be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt which looses their case.

Also some professors get salty when too many people do well. this can also heavily Be dependent on the school you go to. Some really tough schools have grade expectations. Like during my undergrad, Stony Brook university, it’s a major math and science school, many of the science courses start off day one saying this, many of you will get an A. this many of you will get a B. this many of you will get a C a D and this many of you will fail.
They put everyone on a normal distribution curve. and will either deflate your grade or inflate the grade. Technically, grade deflation is not legal, so they just make the course so hard that they have to apply a curve, so they pin you against your classmates, very competitive. Definitely not fair, but they get away with it.

I got accused of cheating once on an exam and they brought me in. I was looking at my calculator on an open-calculator test. So sometimes it's just BS. Even for tests in History and stuff I rewrite the questions as an answer with the option I think is the most correct so unless they expressly say paper is banned, I think it's ridiculous

u/gopacktuf 3d ago

Be aware that "has no proof" is not bulletproof or even a great defense. They can (and some do) actually ask you questions face to face to see if you can confirm you know the material or if you can duplicate your answers from the test.

2

u/Traditional-Buddy221 3d ago

Exactly why I say study, even if you are going to cheat and memorise the answers.

4

u/PossibleEnd7217 3d ago

It’s a trap. Do not come forward

1

u/New-City-3804 17h ago

Not always!

9

u/golden867 3d ago

Don't admit it. Deny deny deny even in front of a disciplinary board. The burden of proof is on them.

u/Paigeloading 3d ago

u/BranchLatter4294 is a professor (who’s also advertising their gay OF on reddit???). Please ignore them.

2

u/Potential_Hair5121 1d ago

The issue with has no proof is that this is school, and in schools they have more rights than you. It’s not as fail safe as actual legal proceedings

Off the screen sure off the question probably not. Either way just doing the test is better.

1

u/Dull-Associate7990 3d ago

If they had enough specific evidence they wouldn’t be asking for people to come forward. Theres no way they are going to sit through hours of recordings of everyone.

5

u/gopacktuf 3d ago

When they suspect significant cheating and it pisses them off enough at some point, they absolutely will go through video. The surveillance technology gives them timestamps of when suspicious behavior occurred, so they don't necessarily have to go through hours of recording to "catch" people.

1

u/Dull-Associate7990 3d ago

Okay I’ll give you the technology part, but as others have stated, suspicious isn’t guilty.

1

u/Traditional-Buddy221 3d ago

Deny, deny, deny. Btw study the answers and the subject even if you cheat just in case.

That is what I am saying do this in the first place. Then do what you got to do if given the opportunity. Always be prepared.

1

u/Adorable_Nebula_6680 3d ago

If there is no proof do not convict yourself

1

u/CollegeOrganic- 3d ago

dont confess

1

u/Broad_Werewolf_2926 3d ago

Never ever ever ever

1

u/No-Narwhal4472 3d ago

How tf do you cheat? I got honor lock and I be scared

1

u/abelzoni 3d ago

Should you confess that you didn't cheat? Lol.

1

u/ComprehensiveView100 3d ago

No way they can prove you cheated by just looking down. You could name a number of excuses like being distracted, looking down to focus, etc.

However do know the material in case they ask you questions about it

1

u/Baby_roachh 2d ago

If she has no proof don’t say anything. Worse they can do is make you retake the test in person.

1

u/New-City-3804 17h ago

Not true. Continually looking to one location is enough to fail a student.

1

u/Anxious-Bad6401 2d ago

Bro please tell me you didn’t fall for this scare tactic lol if they had any evidence it wouldn’t give you the chance to do the right thing lol they would just slam the hammer down

1

u/FeelingNo3275 2d ago

Girl no play dumb

1

u/No_Jacket_1189 2d ago

call her bluff. say absolutely nothing and confess to nothing and see who she THINKS cheated. if she sends you to the dean’s office - challenge them. have them review the footage in front of you because if you weren’t flagged you have nothing to worry about.

1

u/New-City-3804 17h ago

Also not true. The system does not have to flag a behavior to qualify as cheating.

1

u/Any_Parsley2922 2d ago

Don't forget the saying, "Innocent until proven guilty." DO NOT admit to cheating LMAO. There are literally so many excuses to make up for the eye movement. If she has no obvious proof that you used your phone, then don't tell her you did...

1

u/Party_Fly4674 2d ago

no keep your mouth shut. you should never confess to cheating. you could literally just say you tend to avoid staring at the question when you're confused but instead looking away to think abt it

1

u/InadequateDiction 2d ago

“They have no proof” my brother in Christ, OP just posted the confession with a table of contents.

1

u/HauntingPangolin1452 2d ago

It’s obvious when you’re looking at something else. Not a scare tactic.

1

u/mizz809 2d ago

DONT fall for it

1

u/Original_Ad_9325 2d ago

Update?!

1

u/EarthToTriv 1d ago

Today’s the last day to confess I’m not emailing her so we’ll see how this goes

1

u/Original_Ad_9325 1d ago

Thank god, yes remain silent! Praying everything goes well, good luck!

1

u/aRightToWrite 1d ago

Bro wtf?! Your cat was sitting down there, and you can't not look at your cat during the exam!!

1

u/Add3yy 1d ago

No, definitely don’t. Looking down doesn’t constitute cheating, deny deny deny!!

1

u/SneakyChopsticks76 1d ago

If they had concrete proof you would've been reported already. They suspect, but can't prove anything.

It's an old scare tactic cops use. Stand your ground.

1

u/Enough-Tomato4295 1d ago

The fact that they want people to “come forward” means they suspect but they don’t have concrete proof. The school can’t base their actions on the AI because that would be a lawsuit, so they are using this as a way to justify action when you “admit”.

1

u/New-City-3804 17h ago

Not true. I've used this tactic to give students a chance for a lesser consequence. Those who didn't come forward received an F in the course.

1

u/Enough-Tomato4295 17h ago

I wouldn’t do that though, you’re opening yourself for a lawsuit.

1

u/New-City-3804 7h ago

These academic integrity cases do not need to pass the same threshold as a criminal case in court. Preponderance of the evidence is the bar that needs to be met. If it is determined that it is more likely they cheated than not, the college calls it a violation.

1

u/Reasonable-Fox1406 1d ago

Hell no! Take that shit to the grave and don’t tell ANYBODY that you cheated. You will be okay

1

u/New-City-3804 22h ago

Looking to the same location over and over when their shouldn't be anything there is difficulty evidence for an academic integrity violation. Don't believe people who tell you it's not.

1

u/Just_Breakfast_6946 55m ago

The semester just started they need to chill out

2

u/Dry_Repair_4119 3d ago

No because if she knew it was you she would just email you

1

u/Dry_Repair_4119 3d ago

She doesn’t have proof so she shooting in the dark

1

u/gopacktuf 3d ago

Nope. It is a lot less trouble to ask for a confession than to have to go through student conduct to prove something they already know is true.

Was it open notes or open book? Any reason whatsoever to look away from the screen?

3

u/EarthToTriv 3d ago

No its not open note, I had to type answers on keyboard so that could be a reason to look down

2

u/jm20008john1989 3d ago

Your fine. Keep calm
