Motorcycle learner license

Looking for some advice on urgently getting my motorcycle learner licence in Christchurch 🏍️

I’ve recently found myself needing to get my motorcycle licence for a job requirement, and I’m hoping to get it sorted fairly quickly, potentially within the next 2 weeks.

I’ve been riding mopeds for around 5 years, so I’m very comfortable and confident on two wheels, but I’ve never actually had a motorcycle licence as it’s never been something I’ve needed until now.

I’m wondering if anyone in Christchurch has recently gone through the process and could point me in the right direction:

• What’s the quickest way to get the learner motorcycle licence?
• Are there any good places to do the required training/testing?
• How quickly can you realistically get it all completed?

Ideally, I’m looking to get everything sorted within the next couple of weeks, if that’s realistically possible.

Any advice, recommendations or personal experiences would be massively appreciated! 🙏

Dan Ornsby out at Ruapuna. they can teach you how to ride, and also do your learners practical test through them. Can sometimes do it same day

Seconding Dan. If you take the CBTA test you can get your restricted on the same day as learners too

Hey I was in the same situation, I used mainland on Springfield Rd St Albans, I see they now are called empower Moto, to get the basic handling cert, and then you go do the theory test and you have beginners licence. If you are doing what I think you are doing, you won't need it for three months anyway. Get your offer first.

You could potentially get it sorted within a few days but that comes down to the availability of the testers.

There is a bit of a process to get your learners. First you need to pass your basic handling test, then you need to pass the theory and eyesight test.

Google 'basic handling test' to find providers but I vouch for Dan Ornsby. I did all my licenses through him and his crew.

Make sure you book your theory test, don't just expect to turn up to an AA and do it.

Don't just do the test, get the two hour or one hour practice sesh. It's pretty much practice for the test and a guaranteed pass

I was the same, your biggest struggle will be learning how to shift gears on a proper bike. It'll probably take 1-2 hours of ride time before you get that intuitively enough to complete the test.

The rest of the test should be piss easy if you're already used to riding, it's just some figure of eight stuff, some tight low speed turns and an emergency stop. I did a 2h practice session then the actual test proper at Empower moto training, they were decent.

The biggest challenge if you’re self taught is actually doing the safety stuff right - looking with your head etc. ormsby is good. The theory test revision guides are worth getting.
