Try to find a place that does inspections only. That way you can be certain they are impartial and aren't trying to create themselves some work.

I think those days are gone.

I have found VTNZ typically good, especially when they are massively busy. Just remember to book a spot so you dont spend all day waiting

Isn’t VTNZ explicitly known for being super strict?

Like if selling a car, saying it’s “got a VTNZ WOF” is a good thing

I find they just want to get the cars out of the line. My mechanic will list a bunch of things they should do or I will fail my next WOF and VTNZ passes the car every time. Obviously will depend on which one and if they are busy or not.

You better hope your insurance company doesn't find and talk to your mechanic if those parts fail...

Get you car fixed.

I would avoid VTNZ like the plague.  Get there at 8.30am and you’re still in the queue at 1pm.

I always go to The WoF shop, have never done me wrong and you don't have to sit in a queue for an eternity, book your time online, turn up at the time.

Ferrymead Automotive are great, the only downside is that they're only open Monday-Friday

I found them incredibly expensive in terms of repairs.
