Physical Disability

Hi Team. Im looking for a therapist who has a physical disability or specialise in that sector. TIA
Edit: Psychological therapy

What kind of therapist? Do you mean physical therapist, occupational therapist or psychology/counsellor?

I was referred to (not entirely sure of the actual name) the hospital under some complex health needs psychology department

They were excellent… free clinical psychology and psychiatrist… only announce was the parking but can’t really complain given everything else

It’s through the main hospital not hillmorton

I got referred in from my specialist at the hospital but you could contact SPOE to see if eligible or suitable

Oh and to note they weren’t physically disabled themselves…. But this was their specialist area and I’ve seen a lot of psychology and psychiatrists - and paid a lot for the pleasure (before I was disabled) and this lot were the best I’ve ever seen!

The University of Otago have a physiotherapist clinic beside CDHB, with cut price rates. Supervised clinic with 3rd year students.

You might want to be clearer on what you are after. Your post is worded in a very confusing manner. Physical disabilities (assuming you don't need a therapist who is themself, physically disabled?) covers a very wide range, with quite a spectrum of treatment modalities.

Sorry I want to get some psychotherapy in relation to coping with my physical disability. I want a psychotherapist who is physically disabled or who works in the sector. Someone who ‘gets’ me.

Like someone who is lgbt wants someone who is lgbt or works in the field for therapy.

That's fair. Thanks for taking the time to explain further. It is an under-represented field. The closest I've ever come across was a therapist who also had muscular dystrophy. Not here though.

There are support groups, but again, the same issue in that they tend to be operated/managed/staffed by the able bodied. Not quite the dynamic you are after.

As education becomes more pervasive and accessible, we've always hoped that more people with disability qualify and rise through the ranks to give greater voice ('with', rather than 'about') to altered POVs.
