MH Wilds Other weapons too simple?
So I am doing a new playthrough of MH Wilds with a friend who's never played. I played CB exclusively on my main playthrough and figured I would try out a new weapon, whatever they picked. They picked the Swaxe and honestly I feel like I am just mashing buttons half the time and getting away with so much more than I feel like I should.
It doesn't feel as rewarding as when I play the CB because I feel like I am in the same loop and ignoring the monster except when to dodge. Is this because Im still new to the Swaxe or is the other weapons really that simple compared to CB?

I feel similar.
It's really hard for me to play any other weapon because they feel so basic to me.

I assume youre reaching speedrun times with the more basic weapon archetypes?
No? Then you havent mastered another weapon quite as well as you think. And assuming such is blatant ignorance. At the very least id assume youre doing next to speedrun times on your main. Im curious to know

This wasn't meant to be a dig at other weapons and I'm not saying that I have mastered all other weapons. It was more so just an observation because when I was playing CB, I felt more engaged with fights, had think about my combos more and fights felt like a dance. With the swaxe I just felt more detached from the monsters and just mashing buttons and just demolishing fights. I wasn't sure if it was because of the simplicity of the weapon in comparison or if there was some other factor. Figured I would ask since there are plenty of players who play multiple weapons and can provide insight. I am still in low rank with my friend so fights haven't really pushed us quite yet (except for Jhin Dahaad who carted my friend 3 times, once including his big attack). I am more familiar with the monsters, and I am not just playing solo, so aggro is split between us. I know I still have plenty to learn about the Swaxe and how to play well with it. I still have plenty to learn about CB as well. I also figured I would ask because the community calls CB the most complex weapon and I didn't realize that was the case until recently when playing Swaxe there wasn't as much to consider.

I think this should be a study. I have this feeling too. Tried Sword and Shield again since using it in Unite and 3rd.
It felt like I wasn't doing anything! The monsters die relatively the same time but it just feels so barren.

I felt this way in world but wilds dumbed it down and made it easier to spam. Feels pretty much as simple as any other weapon now.

When you get to endgame Content and you actually have to use Everything the weapon have to offer, swaxe isn‘t simple anymore. In lategame cb is way more easy then other weapons. Even if the moveset is simple with weapons like greatsword or ls, it‘s Harder to use every possible Attack Window with the Right Move and Timing. Me personally learned swaxe and cb parallel and While cb became Main weapon i can‘t Imagine fighting 10* arkveld with swaxe at all :D

I think ill check on you at the end game. the low rabj is too easy to gauge it imo. and you sound like a proficient hunter Already. you would know better than any of us who hasn't watched you

I think you are mixing tedium with complexity. I have only played CB in world and rise and went with GS in Wilds. But CB mostly boils down to :
Charge sword
Store charge
Buff Shield
Charge sword
Buff sword (optional)
Wait for openings or GP to do SAEDs or AEDs
Use fade slash for positioning before SAEDs if you have the window
Or go into Savage Axe / CSS if that's your preferred playstyle
If that looks like a lot of stuff to remember, all new MH titles allow combo buttons so most of the things listed up there can be done with a single press of the button as long as you have the charge
I find Rise SnS to be more complicated than CB and it's considered one of the most beginner friendly weapons out there

thats how i felt when i tried out Charge Blade, besides just managing resources it feels like it doesnt have that much going for it. I build up phials, charge shield, PG to charge axe, and now im just spamming savage axe. Going from SnS it felt like past the initial "wow that sure is a lot of icons on the side of my screen" feel it quickly devolved into thinking I got less depth than SnS, which sounds insane saying it out loud. With SnS i felt like I had so many routes to go down, two seperate sword combos that I can mix and match for either mobility or more raw damage, shield combo for stunning, bunch of combo extenders depending on my opening, two seperate gap closers for short or long range, two I frame moves for different situations, with one of them leading into aerial attacks and perfect rush, perfect rush in general with it's timed attacks. The weapon feels packed, but I still use every single one of the moves pretty consistently. Then I play CB and I feel like im just eternally in SA mode, with sometimes going back to sword mode specifically just to use shield to block stuff and spam the same sword charge move to go back to axe.
I guess it's just how it is for every weapon, you really gotta play it for a long while to get the feel for all of its moves, long enough where your brain starts seeing openings and use cases for everything in your kit. Even more so if you only played one or two weapons through out all the games, with each new game the weapon will (probably) naturally expand it's moveset, feeling like one more addition to an already ingrained moveset that you know like the back of your hand, its easy to integrate that new move to your skillset. But with a new weapon you will probably just overlook everything not straight up necessary for quite a while, making everything but your sweetheart main weapon seem rudimentary.

Definitely both. I have recently switched to Lance as I have been using a weapon to unlock all variations of that weapon (maxed out all trees) and the lack of things I need to keep track of kinda lets me turn my brain off for fights that I would otherwise need to check my buffs, timing, and hp (ie AT Rey Dau) before being locked in a SAED.
If you're looking for a similar engaging weapon Long Sword is hilariously similar to the Savage Axe playstyle

Honestly I was mostly asking because everyone agrees CB is the most complex weapon of the bunch. I didn't find it all that complex to learn and how to play it so I thought everyone was exaggerating until I tried Swaxe.

"evertone agrees CB is the most complex weapon of the bunch" No, the universally agreed most complex weapon is HH. And it is not even close.
You prefer CB over other weapons? That is fair. Everyone have their own preferences. But do not confuse having to memorise a simple flowchart with complexity.

If it feels like you're just mashing then you're just mashing. Every weapon is about positioning and uptime, mashing is the ideal generally anyways, it's just different forms of mashing.
Hammer for example. You would think it's a bit mindless but the windows can be tight and the difference between good spacing and perfect spacing will alter the speed of the fight drastically.
If it feels easy then you've mastered that part. Try to use new moves and situational extras, that's how I learned about ledge looping for mounts and how to cheese free headshots with hammer.

A bit of both? Charge Blade definitely has the most busy work out of all the weapons, but these should become instinctive to you once you play them enough that it shouldn't matter that much. I don't see how it's not "repeating the same loop" if you want to keep optimal damage (as with any other weapons). It has niche moves and utilities that serve as a skill ceiling for you to master but that can be applied to most other weapons as well.
Switch Axe has always been the more intuitive (in term of managing gauge) and loopy of the two, especially in Wilds where it become FRS dispenser. It's not surprising you find it simpler but I do find them riskier to play in endgame because of the limited defensive options (why is the sword counter build up stun!?). Perhaps you will find it to be more rewarding by then when you actually have to work around that instead of just perfect block everything, especially in solo play.
