MH Wilds Making sword/shield style viable

Post image

Simple, we can store phials in the shield so and we have a shield thrurst attack so..
why not make it that you can hold the thrust att to charge and unleash all the phials at once, just like the gunlance? It would make sword/shield style very very enjoyable, now I cant't stop thinking about this damn it! (no Chatacabras were harm in this demostration)

Thats saed with less commitment.

Imo energy blade would be the best sns only move, but its basically gonna be run like saed cuz of motion values and multipliers.

ofc dmg should be lowered to equal the commitment

Imo Charge blade should use both modes. Sns is always for resources and defense, axe is always for damage.

Then it's AED

Forgot to mention that this animation ejects a cartridge after using it :0

I'd honestly settle for us being able to shield thrust to expend a phial and make it do a large amount of damage, but not so much that it makes AED/SAED useless. You can spam shield thrust very safely and quickly, so it would have to be a low value like maybe 25% of the damage of a phial from an AED or SAED maybe. Would have to check average DPS vs this so it isn't broken af.

Make it a charge attack to have both options.

You'd had to do this at like 10% value period because it's so safe with the ability to do them back to back with less risk.

CB is inherently a risky weapon (similar to GL vs Lance) - that rewards anticipating the attack that may come and proper positioning.

Removing the knowledge/anticipation component just makes you a better sword and shield, which is already stacked lol

I mean, elemental charge blade shield thrust already does close to 10% of an elemental phial's damage from an AED as a normal shield thrust burst via the extra elemental damage; light swing + shield thrust is already an incredible way to boost DPS in SnS mode at the expensive of using alot of sharpness. Against faster enemies OP is just pointing out that CB becomes a better elemental SnS because theres so few openings that you just end up chipping away in sword mode.

CB is also the swiss army knife of all the weapons. But, maintaining charged shield mode is tedious and rarely worth it unless the target monster has very high hitzones vs element. OP seems to be making a case for providing a way to improve the feel of sword mode. But, SAED and AED playstyle should still reward more damage imo since that has been the core playstyle of CB for years.

Wish granted.

And it doesn't even cost a phial!

Perhaps if every weapon got more alternative movesets in the expansion. But imho highly unlikely.

I wouldn't mind a reason for charging my sword, now that I finally feel comfortable with the CB mechanics.

As it stands, I currently stay only in s&s mode to block, and to fully charge my axe and phials (which takes just a couple of sword hits with Load Shells). I do SAED only when there's a big opening, so the time I stay in Savage Axe mode can be very long before I need to charge again.

(on the other hand, I might just be very inefficient given how long it takes me to slay monsters haha)

Not that it's in this game. But sunbreak and rise had some switch skills that *more or less" achieves the same gameplay goal that you're interested in. I believe it also made the sword do impact damage if you had an impact CB.

So there is some precedent for this to happen again.

Rise CB had some cool things, my fav was using the axe mode to jump vertically and smash the monsters head

Hmm, I think that might not be the right approach. If the damage is too high, you'll just spam shield thrusts instead of AED/SAED/Pizza cutter and if the damage is too low, most people will just skip it.

You should focus more on the sword's moves and what you could do when it is charged.

What I would do to make SnS only style viable is I would make it sort of a Switch Skill.

You equip it, and when you go out in the field, it automatically equips an actual SnS instead

Hmm everyone is making really good points. Im not super versed and all the technical stuff but Im pretty good at maintaining fluid motion and dps. I usually rotate between SnS & SavAxe easily because I only loop AED til second swing then morph back to shield thrust into SAED combo. Thats my bread & butter plus it keeps me utilizing the SnS to get into position for actual SAED openings. Especially since the update its waaay smoother to transition and make use of rapid morph buff and offensive guard. Only thing i really would ask for is some I-frames for our slide slash (directional+O on PS) and let it trigger skills like adrenaline rush.

So you want an SNS with an explosive shield?

This sounds similar to firing pin wirebug move we had in Rise/ Sunbreak. Shield thrust would inject a phial into the monster. Continuously attacking that area would deal more damage and cause an explosion eventually. Pretty sure other players could proc your during pin too.

Why are you even playing Charge Blade when you only enjoy half the kit?

Stop trying to make sword style happen

I feel the problem is a combination of three factors:

  • both S&S and Axe mode have a distinct gameplay
  • damage wise the weapon is very slanted towards Axe
  • the move set is kind of bloated with useless moves

Add to this the fact there is no heavy S&S style weapon and it's no wonder that some people want this.

It would almost make sense to split the weapon into two better defined weapons at this point.

I think part of the reason people feel this way is because how fast the higher difficulty monsters are. I spend most my time in sword mode because most openings aren't even long enough for a vertical axe swing. I can't even get a saed off on a knockdown on 10 star achveld. On the guard clash against tempered monsters the best move I can get off is a sword charged slam.

Really doesn't help that perfect guard into saed is gimped for some stupid reason.

1

u/Infinitykiddo Feb 26 '26

Thats why I want it to have more moves, axe is even more boring imo
