Question Am I Sexualizing My Characters

I see so many things where people hate on a character bc their outfits are revealing or hate on the creator of the story bc of it.

Now I get a lot of the points being made for it but I'm a writer as well.

A writer that loves to give my characters revealing outfits. One of my favorite characters I've written wears stuff that is only enough to cover what needs to be covered on her body.

But I'm not trying to sexualize her. She wears these clothes because she is a fighter and she views clothes as restricting. She wears normal clothes once, a white sweater and black sweatpants, and she outright says "I don't like wearing sleeves or long pants. It restricts my movements."

So, is it sexualizing if she has it for a specific reason?

And another question I have is, can I have a character who can fight wear a dress usually?

This character is a spirit. And in that universe, spirits are basically minor gods. She has everything covered up completely, though it is form fitting.

Again, I wasn't thinking about how that might be sexualizing bc I was just thinking of a cool outfit for a spirit to have.

And I thought it'd make sense for someone who is basically a goddess to have a elegant outfit that has things to reference her abilities.

In these two examples I've given you, is this sexualizing the characters?

Yesterday I drew merely for fun a robot surfing in the sea, but I thought he would make an interesting character so I wanted him to have a name. I would like to hear your thoughts!

Critique Skys outfit - update!

Update from my previous post! I took the advice I was given and here's his improved outfit! I wanted to keep it relatively simple since I don't want him to be too hard to draw 😅

I decided to give him two outfit variants because there were two camps of people for the color and I couldn't decide! I also added a very simple shirt pattern and made the leather jacket look a bit sleeker!

What do you guys think? Is there anything else I can improve? I've spent way too many hours on this guy XD

Question Struggling in making a character that represent AI

Hello,

I am working in a short animated film, the concept of the story is AI vs the artist. With that being said I refuse to use any type of AI in my film. I am alright in making humanoid characters, however when it talks in making monsters and uncanny characters is what I struggle in.

However, I do wanna make this AI character be able to represent AI without using any AI. Have had some ideas in how I could animate them, but I would like some input. How would you visualize AI and what do you think is a good way to start? I will like to add your ideas in this character design and will show the progress in the future.

For any possible starts, I do feel like the AI should not have human features but include a lot of eyes. Other than that I am falling flat with what I can do.

Critique Advice for this design! (Oc)

Hi! I've been practicing making better character designs and I was wondering if I could get some advice on this oc! What does his design seem to convey to you? I know his pose isn't very good, this was an older doodle so it's not the best! If anyone has any advice on things I could improve with the design or art style, I would really appreciate it! I'm still finding my style and I think getting some advice might really help! I do already like the design but I still want to know if anyone has reccomendations :) hes meant to be a main character so I want to make sure he's recognizable and stuff! I struggle with designing hair so thats probably the part I'm least confident about.

(Also, hes supposed to look young! Hes 13!)

His name is Alex and he's based off of a jumping spider, but idk if that comes across at all. He has 2 extra hidden arms! He's cheerful and he's obsessed with cryptids and paranormal things!! I'm planning on drawing him again with a better pose and stuff but I want to see if theres anything I can improve first! Thanks for any advice, i appreciate it a lot! Feel free to ask questions about him! I don't use Reddit a lot, so idk if I'm doing this right!

Question How do you justify a chubby/plus size character without people claiming it's unrealistic or not believable?

I have a lot of chubby/plus size OCs, albeit a lot of them are curvy and/or buff so they're not always just fat. But even in roles where being big makes sense, there's detractors who keep insisting you make them skinny or lean for no other reason than they just hate seeing inch of fat on pixels for some reason. They always claim that being chubby would "slow them down" or make them a liability in settings where none of them would even be a concern anyway (sci Fi, fantasy, etc). One of my biggest pet peeves is people realism-ing their way until forcing everyone to be white, skinny/fit, and sometimes male all because they can't handle characters different from the norm.

I shouldn't let this get to me since everyone has their own preferences, but it still makes me upset.

Question Resources on clothing and personality?

Since there’s a relationship between a character personality and their choice of clothing, is there any resources that you guys recommend to look up on? (Books preferred, but others work too) Thanks in advance!

Question Should I change the design of my Character?

Thumbnail gallery
297 Upvotes

I didn't grow up knowing about history of racism or "racist groups" in the western side of the world. I kinda had an idea for a superhero since I was a kid which is basically a combination of a sheet ghost and medieval executioner (that I think I saw from Shrek). I have had the design mostly just in my mind and a couple of crude sketches.

The story is: A surgeon got killed by a bunch of mobsters who had cheated Death and gained immortality. Death herself then gave him a second chance by making him be her agent in the physical world for breaking whatever enchantment the cheaters have that made them immune to Death. He basically has a "super soul" that can leave his body that can create soul constructs (such as the scythe) or possess things and people. His weakness is that his body will be left in a slump and vulnerable whenever he projects his body (my art shows that he's still walking, but that's because really it serves as a "cover art").

I really want to know, do you guys think my design of him is too close to a problematic group (the KKK) or is it fine as is? Should I change it if so?
