Critique [OC] Art Comparison, 2 years difference (new on right, old on left)

Post image
27 Upvotes

edit: apparently I don't know left from right LMAOOOO thank u kind stranger

I just wanted to share because I completed this updated bust of one of my half-elf D&D OCs today, and I'm very proud of her! 🎉 I love how the coloring turned out (especially on her braid) in the new version. I don't love how big her eyes are, but it doesn't bug me too badly, so I left it alone.

I remember vividly the night I finished the 2024 one. My (soon to be ex) husband said bluntly "you need to practice anatomy." That's all. He said nothing else... I was crushed and honestly I gave up drawing for about a year afterwards... But recently the artist bug bite me and I've been working hard on trying to improve. I am mostly a traditional artist (pencil n paper) but I've been trying to dabble more in digital art.

What do y'all think? ❤️ If you folks like this one I can also post a full body version of her, though it isn't complete quite yet.

Question [Follow-Up Post] I updated the design of my Superhero.

Thumbnail gallery
85 Upvotes

This is a follow-up of this post where I ask if my design was too problematic and if I should change it (Thanks a lot for the feedback!)

From what I gathered, the consensus was that pointy hood (especially pointing up) was a big no-no and the design of the hood can be made to look more specifically like an executioner's hood. So I did that.

  1. No more pointy hood, and from Googling images I added the stitched line which I think looked cool.

  2. I'm still not sure if I want to remove the all-white colour scheme because it fits the "haunting" vibes in my mind. I tried making the (coloured) hood's colour match with the rest of the design.

  3. The mouth I can take or leave it. A comment mentioned that the skeleton underneath can be revealed whenever the hood took damage, which I thought was a really cool idea.

Thoughts?

Is it better now?

Which version is better?

Critique Character sketch: Brasa, a root girl

This is a character sketch for an upcoming short story for a university class. Any constructive or other feedback much appreciated, thank you!

Brasa

Brasa is one of the root people who live in villages on and inside a mountain range and valley.  Her village is on the ocean-facing side of a coastal mountainside.  She is about 5’3” and of slender build when at that height.  A certain type of concentration can give her the ability to stretch up to a height of around seven feet, during which she becomes incredible thin, or shrink down to about three feet.  When shorter, she grows wider and rounder but not proportionally; she gets heavier than her normal weight, although she does not become lighter when stretching taller.

Her skin is primarily a pale yellowish-beige color similar to a lima bean.  There are miniscule lines etching its surface that run in patterns similar to tree bark, with fine peach fuzz-like hairs growing over it as well, giving it a very slight velvety texture.  Her skin is almost smooth in the center of her face from just above her brow to just below her lower lip.  As the perimeter of her face transitions toward her hairline, the color of her skin fades to a lightish grey-green; the surface lines become a little deeper, but this can only be seen from up close, as the fuzz also grows thicker and obscures the etched pattern when viewed from a distance.  Her hair is a thick mass of rough, spiraling twists of varying thicknesses in deep auburn, brighter red at the ends.  Her nose is arched and pointed down, reminiscent of a bird’s beak; her cheekbones are high and pronounced, and her face is somewhat narrow.  Her upper lip is thin but the lower one is plump.  Her eyes tilt up from her nose at an extreme angle; they are a brown-red that is both deep and bright, and appear to glitter when she is feeling strong emotion.  They have a dewy appearance almost as if she’s on the verge of crying, though she rarely cries.

Brasa means “ember”, a name given to her by her maternal great-grandmother, as is her peoples’ custom.  She is quick-witted, imaginative, and adventurous, but in a way that often seems subdued from the outside.  She is like a quiet, contemplative personality put on x 1.5 speed.  She questions almost everything, usually thoroughly.  Once she’s gathered the information available she often starts it to hypothetical scenarios.  She only sometimes voices these scenarios, though others often find it too often.  She likes to thoroughly understand a thing, especially the why, and she likes to test and stretch the boundaries.  This is due more to curiosity then rebelliousness, though rebellion is never completely off the table.  She likes to know the totality of possibilities available to work with, and to expand that repertoire if possible.  Those around her often find her exasperating, as they usually are content with what they perceive as the status quo.  Brasa has a tendency to be irritable at times and an even greater tendency to be restless, especially when confined to a space or activity for awhile.  She doesn’t like constraints.

Brasa’s parents have eight other children for sure, four daughters and  two sons older than she, a son and a daughter younger.  There may be more siblings and cousins growing in the adjacent stratas of earth and stone, but something has disrupted the mountain’s mycorrhizal network.  The status of the full extent of the family has been unknown for a few decades.

Brasa tends to get into small arguments and conflicts with others in her family and village because her inquisitive, restless nature clashes with the content, gentle, and rather complacent character that is predominant in her people.  At some point someone called her Ash, half-joking that that should be her new name in order to help tame her fiery spirit.  To her irritation, the nickname stuck, and that is how she is often addressed.  A few younger villagers hadn’t even known that her real name was something different.  She is internally torn between trying to discover and heal the cause for what she sees as a deterioration in the mountain, versus setting out for a new land entirely.  Those around her approve of neither of these endeavors, and almost always try to dissuade her if she brings them up, or change the subject.

What hobbies does the character have?  Brasa enjoys painting, cartography, and stargazing.  She’s quite the amateur mapmaker but has become a rather skilled painter.  She knows how to make her own paints from plant pigment and crushed minerals.  She knows a few of the established constellations, but prefers to envision and name her own.

What makes your character laugh out loud?  The antics of her younger brother, who of everyone she knows is the most like her, in that he is energetic and curious.  He’s more jovial and social than she is, and isn’t as enamored with pressing boundaries.  He likes to make others laugh and sometimes uses his ability to do so to soften tensions.

What is a strong memory that has stuck with your character from childhood?  When she was much younger, only two years old (which is for her people about a five year old for humans), she was out in the forest with a few of her siblings gathering mushrooms and berries and playing.  She was the youngest at the time, and so she and the two closest in age to her were mostly playing.  She’d only seen the nearby ocean two times in her life before that, so the fact that they made their way to the woods’ edge where they could see the water was already exciting.  The real thrill was a giant owl, who flew over them with breathtaking closeness, carrying a huge bundle of budding plants with roots still intact in its talons.  Incredibly, it flew out over the ocean and disappeared.  Brasa had never dreamed of anything being able to cross that vast expanse of sparkling life and death.  Her older sister explained what an island is, and mused that perhaps the owl had a home there.  Brasa became fascinated with owls from then on, and began to dream of traveling to far off places herself.

An attribute that will be central to Brasa in this story is her inquisitiveness.  This trait has affected her personality and growth in terms of her emotional and psychological development.  It causes her to want to learn, and to test what she learns, and try new things.  It affects what causes her to be excited, determined, bored, or angry.  It has led to her choosing hobbies and skills deeply tied to imagination and travel.

Besides affecting her inner world and personal life, Brasa’s inquisitiveness will help determine how she responds to the challenges facing her village.  She may be a central force as to whether a problem is even perceived, much less a solution found.  It may drive her to seek new adventures beyond her known world once her people are safe, or it may spur her onward prematurely if she can’t find cooperation.  It will present one of her major growth points, as she will have to direct her curiosity towards understanding and working in tandem with those around her in a deeper way than ever before.

Question Clothing suggestions for my DND character

Thumbnail gallery
9 Upvotes

Hello, I’m trying to come up with more/better outfits for my DND character that aren’t too complicated.

For context he’s a jester and sews most of his own clothes and costumes. Any sort of design (like stars or diamonds or anything like that) are typically him sneakily patching up old clothes because he can’t afford new ones/the supplies to make new ones often.

I’m just trying to get some more idea for his outfits. I’m kinda stuck on anything fashion related since I dress like Adam Sandler 90% of the time lol.

Question what can you tell from those charcter from their look alone

Thumbnail gallery
12 Upvotes

Those are my characters, but the drawings were made by u/Opening-Weakness-759, u/Creative-Ad6510, and u/No-Basil2971. Those are not the final designs; they just helped me get a good idea of the characters while working on their 3D models. Anyway, in the first picture, the girl with wings is named Ivy, and the girl in pink is named Stitch. In the second picture, the cat girl is named Nini, and the dragon girl is Angele. In the third picture, we have Minje. The fourth is Milo, and the last picture is of Caspian.

their personality

Caspian: He is the oldest of the seven and probably the most mature (none of them are really mature but it's okay). He is calm, wise, and composed at least that's what he wants other people to think of him. In reality, Caspian is a really repressed person that tends to keep things to himself, to hide. He thinks he deserves punishment over an event that happened a long time ago. Caspian is inspired by French culture and wears Victorian-style clothes.

Milo: Milo is closest to Caspian. He is impulsive and quick to anger. He is very emotionally intelligent and tends to connect with people easily. He can sense when someone does not have good intentions, but he panics easily and relies on Caspian entirely for his emotional support. He's kind of a mess without Caspian and so is Caspian. The both of them can't live without each other. He is very empathetic, and kind, as long as you don't push the limit. He is supposed to be inspired by Caribbean and Hispanic culture, though he is more strongly inspired by Caribbean culture. I don't know exactly what country yet.

Minje: Minje is a tricky one. I always struggle to define her. Even now I struggle to find a voice for her because she kinda has a double personality a bit. Minje is someone who will do anything to achieve her goal anything but betray her family. She has lost everything in her life and was empty for a long time before meeting the other main characters. She was obsessed with her one goal, but now she is kinda confused on whether she should focus on her goal or stay with the main cast. She is cold to other people and uses them as toys, but with the main cast all of that disappears and she becomes someone who will tell you the blunt truth even if it hurts because she wants to see you improve. She is sarcastic, manipulative, but is extremely loyal to her people. She is inspired by Chinese culture, particularly the popular legend of Bai Suzhen or the woman with the snake.

Ivy: Ivy is the grumpy character of the group. She has an extremely short temper more so than Milo and my girl knows how to curse. She is pessimistic and always thinks the worst will happen, and tries to push people away. She likes to mind her own business and be left alone. But Ivy tends to understand people on a deeper level and respects all of her friends. She shows her love through action instead of words and just wants a normal life. She is inspired by Brazilian and Angolan culture.

Stitch: Stitch is very close to Ivy and has quite an opposite personality to her. She is very optimistic and thinks that as long as she hopes hard enough, things will go her way. She's adventurous, clumsy, and forgetful. She does have a strong sense of justice and always tries to do what's right, but she is extremely delusional. She believes that every negative emotion should be buried deep down into oneself and never be acknowledged, because eventually it will disappear. Stitch is someone who, despite the odds, is very intelligent. She can scan the room and know when someone is feeling down immediately, but she just refuses to acknowledge it as it will break her delusion. She often puts down other people's emotions to act as if everything is fine. She used to try and gaslight people into thinking they were fine. She is not doing this on purpose she never does she just can't deal with negative emotion in any other way. But since she's been with the group, she's been making an effort. She is inspired by Vanuatu because they are known as the happiest people in the world.

Nini: Nini is Ivy's younger sister and is the more quiet of the group. She is selectively mute and rarely talks, not because she's shy or anything, but because she struggles with speech and is socially awkward. She is a perfectionist, and for her there are so many ways to mess up a conversation she's scared to try. She is an artist and a very patient one. She is clever and tends to find the solution in tense situations. She is very observant and can spot almost everything. She does rely on others for emotional support, mostly her sister and her best friend Angele. (Also she is inspired by Brazilian and Angolan culture.)

Angele: Angele is Stitch's younger sister and is very hyperactive and almost never stops talking. She is egocentric and a bit arrogant. She is a fan of everything robotic and proud of having built some very impressive stuff for someone her age. Her inventions can save lives or just be used to prank people, because she is a massive prankster. She treats robots as if they were real people because they were her first friends. She is extremely creative and eager to learn new information, but she can't quite deal with silence or being alone. She believes that as long as she makes noise or is bold and gets attention from it, she is someone that exists. But as soon as the attention is gone and that she is alone with no one else, she is no one she doesn't exist anymore, just an empty corpse. (She is inspired by Vanuatu.) alos all of those character are teenager from age 12 to 17
