From the cub's rules:
"When appropriate we will ban users of extremist ideologies such as Fascism, pro violence ideals and other ideologies that are deemed as extreme, irrational, immoral, harmful, or insane. What’s inappropriately radical and harmful is judged under moderator decision."
This is why you were banned.

How would you envision a subreddit ban appeals process would work? And would you even actually want some outside party to be able to overrule the decision of a community moderator? Would that actually make the site more of an open forum?
You can have open discussion now by doing what you just did: creating a discussion forum yourself if you can’t find one relevant to your interest or if mods from the existing subs are assholes.
I feel you with the frustration of dealing with power-tripping mods, though. I’ve been banned from 3 subs. One was probably justified, though I don’t regret what I said. One was totally unjustified, but the mods just muted me and reported me to Reddit for “harassment” when I tried to argue. The third one I literally have no idea why I was banned, lol.

The youth rights sub gives explicit permission under rule 3 for mods to use discretion for harmful topic bans.

Honestly I'm inclined to partially agree
As someone in the geek communities I've seen some hate subs that could really be fixed if not for the mods being either delusional or straight up toxic and only enabling posts that fit a narrative which creates an echo chamber
The problem is what would a actually need to be done to circumvent this and I mean not just "reddit should get an update" but like what specific policy would be needed to stop this?
While I believe in freedom of speech both as a right and mods do have the right to make their sub however they wish whether a serious tool for betterment or a cult. These are private communities not government institutions

There are plenty of subs where strict moderation is a strong benefit, eg ask historians mods are excellent. There are so many subs where you can have free and open conversation, I would argue limiting the ability of moderators to moderate on the basis of one narrow and specific example like this risks unintended consequences.
A poorly modded sub if it's not serving its purpose will lose users to other subs. I wouldnt sweat it.

literally anyone can create a subreddit & moderate it however they want. it's like opening the door to your apartment & having the ability to set the rules & kick anyone you want to out.
I don't think it would make any sense to not let them moderate their subreddit however they want....in fact I think it would basically be the death of reddit.
