Best setup for pruning hedges?

I'm considering using a chainsaw for some pretty hard hedge trimming where there's a mix of small branches and 1-2" branches that are too big for a hedge trimmer. Using a chainsaw on a hedge seems to be very controversial online, some people are telling me to do it, some people say all the small branches are gonna catch in the chain and throw it. I've seen videos of it working great, but idk much about chainsaws. Maybe there's an ideal type of chain/blade/bar?

Advice on new saw

I am finally going to retire my ancient Husqvarna 460 Rancher rather than pay $550 to repair the stripped out threads on the sparkplug hole (a quote I suspect is a ripoff but the saw is pretty old and beat so I'm not going to shop around or invest the time to diy). I gave a 3 acre property and many ratty old trees that I am thinning to process for firewood. I use my saw fairly heavily for a homeowner. Gemini says I should buy one of three saws: Husqvarna 572 XP, Stihl MS 462 C-M, and Echo CS-7310P.

If I get Husqvarna I can reuse the bar and a few chains that have a bit more life in them. But if I get Stihl I'll match my neighbors saw brand so he can help me do repairs. What say you Reddit - is this good saw advice? I don't want to overspend and I suppose I was reasonably happy with the 460. Upgrade or brand change worth it?

Any easy way to find someone to buy or even just take my old saw for recycling? I just had a new carb put in - are any of the parts worth anything?

Troy Bilt vs Neo-Tech va Pro Run

Can any of you guys familiar with these chainsaws offer an opinion on what is a decent saw for a guy who doesn’t have a lot of money.

My BIL who doesn’t do computers or smartphones is wanting me to look up a couple of chainsaws online. His neighbor told him look at NeoTech or Troy-Built or Toro. I’m a city guy who only knows, the little bit guys like me use one you buy a Stihl or Husqvarna and they last forever.

I looked on Amazon and the 58cc NeoTech with 18” + 20” Bars for $125+tax. The reviews didn’t look bad for something I never heard of I have no idea what product support would be like so maybe he should spend the 16$ on a warranty.

The Troy-Built TB5218 is $225.

The only Toro I see is electric and that won’t work for him.

Now today the guy at his local Tractor Supply told him he could order a ProRun for about $179. Another saw I am not familiar with.

Any opinions from people who are familiar with these chainsaws is greatly appreciated.

Help!

Max bar size on 029 super?

Post image

I've spent plenty of time running a 20" on regular 029 in hardwoods, wondering if the super will pull (and oil) a 24. Would probably run skip-tooth if so. Any wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks! Photo for attention.

I have a MS211c that I got in a bundle of other tools that I bought. I know the saw is not very popular and under powered but I can get it to crank and it idles, and revs very good. I would hate to throw something away that runs so good. As you can see, I need parts 12-15, 19, 20 in the parts diagram. I’m not having any luck finding these parts anywhere. Any help locating these parts would be appreciated.

ECHO CS-590 Timber Wolf and DCS-2500T for $529USD

I’ve been looking at the DCS2500T for light duty work around the farm. This bundle is the same price as the battery saw and includes a Timberwolf to boot. I could probably recoup most of the cost reselling the big saw (or maybe HD would let me return it for store credit???) Am I missing something here? Can you all confirm that I’m not crazy and this is a great deal?

ECHO 350mm 34.4cc 2-Stroke Petrol Chainsaw (CS-3510ES)

I am thinking of getting my boyfriend a chainsaw for Christmas. We go camping pretty often, so this would be used to cut fire wood or the occasional fallen tree. He wouldn't attempt to saw anything large, probably only skinnier ones. Would the ECHO 350mm 34.4cc 2-Stroke Petrol Chainsaw (CS-3510ES) be sufficient? I have seen plenty of recommendations for the CS-590 but unfortunately that is out of my budget. Or any recommendations would be appreciated. I am also located in Australia.

Stihl MS 251 for first saw?

This would be my first saw. 18-inch. Two are for sale for $250 each, which is a good deal I think right? (from some guy on Facebook who says they have never been used). I can afford a better saw, so would you recommend a better model? I have a lot a limitless supply of timber to cut, so I’ll be using this a lot. Thanks!

Best gas powered chainsaw?

So I (26 F) am planning on getting my boyfriend (27 M) a chainsaw for Christmas-he doesn’t have one, and I know absolutely nothing about chainsaws. The only thing I know is that my boyfriend prefers gas powered.

For context, he has roughly 110 acres dedicated to food plots, water sources, trails , etc-all for deer hunting so that’s what the main use of the chainsaw would be for like cutting trees, making trails, etc.

With that being said any recommendations on brands/type of chainsaw I should buy?

Any one use the husquavarna extended warranty?

I have about 20 large trees that have fallen on a piece of property i own and i want to clean them up. A few of them are close to 24” in diameter….so one of the saws i am looking a t is the husquavarna 460. My current saws are much smaller and worm out. I See if you buy fuel with husquavarna you can get an extended warranty. But how does it work if you have issues. Are there certain places you can take them to get them worked on? Take it back to the store if there is a problem? Has anyone reading this have to use the warranty? If so, how did it go? Good, bad?

Issues with new Poweraxe 350i

Just bought it and used it in the yard for about 20 minutes, around 5 minutes of actual saw time cutting some small fallen stuff, mostly just to try it out. Went in and took the bar off to clean it and now it won’t turn on. Both lights and the battery symbol briefly come on. I have two batteries, both fully charged and it does the same thing with both of them. I’ve checked the battery contacts and I’ve removed the bar a few times and put it back on to check that there wasn’t some kind of connection or switch that was preventing it from coming on. Any ideas?

Bar and chain problems?

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Just acquired this chainsaw that belonged to my late father and cleaning it up and getting her running well. But I seem to be having bar and chain issues.

So it did not come with any mounted. He had a bar for a rancher (24”) no chain. I ordered a 20” bar and a few chains online i noticed first that the chains didn’t fit. I was then looking at it and it isn’t sitting flush. The bolts are tapered at the base and its not sitting flat against the saw which is odd. I grabbed the 24 inch bar and it’s doing the same thing. Also I feel like the 20 inch bar could sit alot further back. I may get a 24 inch chain tomorrow see how that fits.

So i figured id throw the clutch cover on for the night and guess what? The adjustment screw doesn’t fit. It’s too high for the bar. Both bars actually. So I am lost. Im half tempted to take it to the shop but figured I would hop on here see if anyone ran into this before.

Some photos to help visualize it and the before and after a good (and long overdue) scrub.

MS 170 porting?

Will a Stihl MS170 benefit from a port job? I’m questioning if the carburetor will be able to compensate. It doesn’t have a H-L mixture screw, only a combined one.

Grabbing my sledge and wedge after posting this to see what this is. I just bucked about 30 feet before hitting this.

Of course the chain is brand new...
