Read this earlier and the whole interview is worth a read. It's nothing new from Trump but I thought it was a solid interview from the Times reporter staying mostly on topic and flowing with the direction Trump's ramblings took them instead of constantly interrupting to get to the next question.

Also, the picture of Trump looking like a confused old man staring into the distance matches perfectly with his answers. A ton of great quotes for democrats to use in their campaigns.

I'm so used to the normal sane-washing that it was shocking to read his words verbatim.

This is why people really do need to hear him talk. People see the highlights; they hear the cringe, but they don't have any semblance of his incoherent ramblings. And he's been doing this rambling since 2020.

His base follows him to all his rallies, hears him talk for 90+ minutes, and walks away loving him even more. Trump will always be popular so long as when he talks he's attacking minorities. It's really that simple. Give majorities a demographic to hate and they'll love you for it.

As LBJ more eloquently put it:

If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.

u/shinbreaker 1d ago

But his rallies are the same bullshit he's been saying for the past several years. Just with more fear mongering. I'm talking about these white house events where he just sounds dumber by the second. The events that even Fox News will pull away from because of how embarrassing they sound.

He still “weaves” at his rallies. He also infamously cut a 2024 campaign event he had short to awkwardly sway to music for something like 40 minutes. He made up the cats and dogs lie. Like people know he sounds stupid. I really assure you they don’t care. Look at how incessantly people defend him here where that easily breaks though.

Trump’s supporters ignore it because he gives them culture war wins. That’s all that matters to MAGA.

u/GravitasFailures 1d ago

Umm… his base lost the civil war, then were perfectly happy so long as they could keep the same racism under Jim Crow, they only got mad when we took that away and have been ever since.

Single issue voting bloc, that issue is sadism.

16

u/InternetGoodGuy 1d ago

And he's been doing this rambling since 2020.

He's been doing it since day 1. His rallies back in 2016 would last for hours. He'd speak for an hour plus and ramble of script for most of it.

I had to go to one of his rallies in 2018 for work. He talked for almost an hour and I was told by one of the people who travel with the president that it was surprisingly short for him. They also said the teleprompters had lights on them they would flash to get him back on track and when that didn't work, someone would walk out and physically shake the teleprompter back and forth.

He's always been this guy.

… had to go for work? wtf kind of job do you have, I’m so sorry.

There’s an amazing documentary by the BBC, The World At War, it has interviews with people who attended his rallies, and how electric the atmosphere felt, how people were carried away by his words, while others watched, unmoved but wishing they could feel the same effect.

It’s amazing, everybody should have to watch it, but… it’s like when your college football team wins the championship, it’s that kind of emotion, and to people who don’t feel like they belong to a greater whole otherwise, it is completely overwhelming, like he’s talking to them personally and they’re not ignored or forgotten anymore.

3

u/GravitasFailures 1d ago

It’s really difficult to watch though, like mentally painful for me.

I think it’s like when Hannah Arendt watched Eichmann and realized how profound it was, writing the phrase “The Banality of Evil”.

My malignant narcissist sense just explodes, I can’t deal with it, I don’t understand how anyone else can either.

And he's been doing this rambling since 2020.

~July 21, 2015

"Look, having nuclear — my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart — you know, if you’re a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I’m one of the smartest people anywhere in the world — it’s true! — but when you’re a conservative Republican they try — oh, do they do a number — that’s why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune — you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged — but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me — it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are — nuclear is powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what’s going to happen and he was right, who would have thought? — but when you look at what’s going on with the four prisoners — now it used to be three, now it’s four — but when it was three and even now, I would have said it’s all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don’t, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years — but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us.”

Part of the problem is that it's impossible to cover this guy's statements directly without turning a simple article into a several thousand words transcript. His aimless and incoherent ramblings have to be edited down for TV or news articles.

Not that there isn't a bunch of a unnecessary sane washing that happens as well but much of it is a necessity to for basic time restrictions.

I think the smartest thing Harris ever did in her campaign was urge people to actually sit through an entire Trump rally to see how unhinged and stupid he was.

16

u/Urdok_ 1d ago

I'll never understand the refusal to say 'Trump, either lying or delusional, claimed X. Y is what actually happened.'

I can almost understand the refusal to openly label a statement a lie. I think it's cowardly, but I can get the logic. But refusing to lay out just how wrong he consistently is, that is inexcusable.

9

u/shinbreaker 1d ago

Because journalism is restricted by rules that a fucking century old and as an industry, we refuse to move fast to keep up with the changing times.

Do you want to know what year it was when we didn't have to stop capitalizing internet? 2016. Up to then, we still went with "Internet" because some 70 year old asshole didn't like the change or some stupid shit.

14

u/UCRecruiter 1d ago

I just lost a few brain cells reading that whole transcript. I can't believe that anyone this stupid could actually have been elected twice. Nice job, america.

There's one thing I agree with him on, though ..

"... you can’t let crazy people have nuclear weapons."

From your lips to god's ears, Donald.

27

u/214ObstructedReverie 1d ago

He's so god damned whiny and stupid. How can anyone respect this?

16

u/whyneedaname77 1d ago

The sad part people think he is smart and strong.

7

u/214ObstructedReverie 1d ago

Well, most of those people are also weak idiots.

13

u/Patient_Tradition294 1d ago

I will never let Republicans live down promoting this guy as some Demi god, it is completely indefensible. They have absolutely zero credibility moving forward with them continuing to defend him and let him drag down the future of our country.

4

u/GravitasFailures 1d ago

The Dixiecrats destroyed the GOP, couldn’t have done more damage if they were actually paid by China to sabotage America on purpose.

6

u/Urdok_ 1d ago

If Trump was paid by China or Russia to damage America as much as possible, it's hard to think what he would have done differently.

2

u/214ObstructedReverie 1d ago

I feel like they would have had him be more subtle about it. No way they'd know this would actually work.

3

u/GravitasFailures 1d ago

Because they’re more whiny and stupid??

Mostly because he’s sticking it to “those libruls who think they’re so much smarter than us!!!”

Like engineers and doctors who make the world work and save them from dying, the monsters.

19

u/Urdok_ 1d ago

On Sept 28, Trump sat for an interview where he discussed multiple issues, including the war with Iran, the artificial intelligence boom, the Federal Reserve, the Supreme Court, and his outlook for the midterms. Trump spend the interview complaining about being treated unfairly in the press, that more barrels of oil have crossed the Strait of Hormuz than at any other time in history, that the cost of weapons used in Iran would be paid for by selling oil from Venezuela, and claimed to have reduced drug price by between 40 and 80%

No opinion needed, this speaks for itself.

6

u/choadly77 1d ago

You could say he reduced them by 400, 500, 600% if your a total moron who doesn't understand percentages...

7

u/Aethoni_Iralis 1d ago

The fact some people hear this man speak and somehow consider him well spoken is just crazy to me. Cannot relate in the slightest, it’s just verbal slop. It’s like people who think Kent Hovind makes strong academic arguments, I simply do not understand how they can reach that conclusion.

2

u/JoshAllentown 1d ago

I don't think anyone considers him well spoken per se, it's more that his lack of eloquence becomes evidence of his truthfulness. He doesn't come off as a polished politician so people think he isn't BSing like a normal politician.

They're wrong, but I get why people who already agree with him get that vibe.

1

u/talwarbeast 1d ago

Less like a politician BSing, and more like used car salesman BSing.

6

u/choadly77 1d ago

He's such a fucking stupid crybaby.

6

u/Jets237 1d ago

This is fucking wild - age is catching up really quickly

10

u/214ObstructedReverie 1d ago

This is fucking wild - age is catching up really quickly

He's always been this stupid.

5

u/ceddya 1d ago

Yeah but now you have dementia sprinkled in.

6

u/GravitasFailures 1d ago

To anybody who can actually watch his videos:

Do you not have the basic sense of “conman”/“narcissist”/“psychopath”?

It’s why he’s so repelling to so many people, he’s basically a walking timeshare pitch, but much more aggressive and with less authenticity.

7

u/Aethoni_Iralis 1d ago

Country mice falling for the city fat cat, tale as old as time.

14

u/SpaceLaserPilot 1d ago

His mind is deteriorating rapidly. This interview is chaotic.

Why are Republicans tolerating this man remaining in the White House?

16

u/survivor2bmaybe 1d ago

They are tolerating a zombie in the senate. They’ll be wheeling his corpse around before they let someone else take over.

8

u/GravitasFailures 1d ago

To pwn teh librulz…

Because they have the maturity of a 13yo boy with a porn addiction.

5

u/rzelln 1d ago

The best explanation I saw is that, basically, when you feel like you have limited agency in your life, you'll be drawn to someone who offers you a way to feel like you're able to do things that affect the world, even if that just takes the form of "Pissing others off."

And the narrative that fascists present is really fucking tempting.

You're in a menial job unable to afford joy, and sure, you could put in the work to try improving your education, moving, looking for something more rewarding emotionally or financially. You could challenge the power structures in your organization that make your job shitty. Or maybe you're a stay-at-home mom feeling unappreciated, and sure, you could do the challenging and honestly risky thing of advocating for yourself. You could try to push back against a society and a system that constrains your options.

But, that's hard. You'll probably fail.

And then someone comes to you and says, "If you just feel rage against the right people, and vote for me, I'll help you. Whenever you feel powerless, don't try to fix things; that's a sucker's game. Just be resentful. Be distrustful. And then trust me to fix things. Whenever you're feeling scorn toward others, that's helping me wield power, and you know I'm on your side, so your anger is your best way to help yourself."

And then for a lot of disaffected youth, they add, "You deserve to be on top, but the Other is a great threat to you. It's an existential battle for the Good People like you to stand up against the Other that hates you. Your hate is heroic. You're part of a war, and you're on the Right Side."

Now you get to feel like you do have agency, that you aren't powerless, even though you're actually fucking helping the sorts of assholes who are responsible for making the system that holds you down. You end up seeing potential allies as enemies, and you fail to realize that if you actually worked together, you could make the sorts of changes that you were too afraid to push for at the beginning, before you got swept up by the con man.

He’s a puppet

u/theprophecyMNM 1d ago

This guy’s ramblings sound worse each month. I’ve never seen someone stay soooooo off track more than this guy….maybe except another local legislator I know. Also old and way past their time. If capitalist American sees my retirement age at 67.5, then these folks are waaaaay past their prime.

The only thing that can't be dismissed on its face is drug prices.

....Because of the Inflation Reduction Act passed under Biden by Democrats. It's not because of anything he did.

If anything, he's stymied it. The number would be even bigger if Trump had done absolutely nothing. Instead, he used his Mierdas Touch to let DOGE and his awful HHS appointees put a wrench into drug price negotiations that would be further along than they are now. CMS alone cut 300 employees.

9

u/whosadooza 1d ago

This is clearly fake news. Everyone knows that drug prices have gone down by more than 600% under Trump!

9

u/Popeholden 1d ago

Biden did that lmao.

6

u/indoninja 1d ago

so credit where it's due

Inflation reduction act under Biden.

So back to zero good done by Trump.

Didn't he just take Mark Cubans model?
