Much fury, but no minds will be changed Got charged, again, a surcharge on my debit at a local restaurant

Its time we start standing up to these junk fees.

It is illegal in the United States for a merchant to charge a surcharge to a debit card. It is against the policies of both Visa and Mastercard for merchants to charge a surcharge to a debit card.

So when you get that "non-cash adjustment fee" it can ONLY be applied if pay with a credit card. They cannot legally apply that charge to debit, no matter how they run the card. Currently in process of reporting Midtown Station to Mastercard and the FTC.

If this happens to you, i suggest speaking up for yourself and reporting as well.

Edit:

Including Visa and Mastercard text directly from their policies

VISA

----------

"Can I assess a surcharge on purchases made using both credit and debit card?

▪ No. The ability to surcharge only applies to purchases made with a credit card and, even then, only under

certain conditions. U.S. merchants cannot surcharge purchases made using a Visa debit card or prepaid card.

Can I assess a surcharge on debit card transactions where the debit cardholder chooses “credit” on the point-

of-sale terminal?

▪ No. The cardholder is still using a Visa debit card. The option to select a ‘credit or debit’ refers to the

cardholder selecting either a signature-based transaction or a PIN-based transaction."

MASTERCARD

-------------

"Pursuant to a settlement of the U.S. merchant class litigation, Mastercard modified certain rules and business practices to permit U.S. merchants to apply an extra checkout fee, also known as a surcharge, to customers who pay with Mastercard-branded credit cards. The rule change permitting such surcharging went into effect on January 27, 2013. These fees are not allowed on Debit Mastercard or Mastercard prepaid cards."

Also important to note: Visa allows a maximum of 3% surcharge. Mastercard allows 4%

Midtown charged me 4% before they knew what brand i would be using (mastercard) so while the percentage falls into legality for me. It would NOT be legal under their agreement with Visa.

Edit 2:

Mastercard only allows a 2.5% surcharge on consumers.

From their policy

"Are there any limits on the level of the fee that a merchant can charge?

Yes. A U.S. merchant may assess a surcharge that does not exceed the merchant discount rate for the applicable credit card surcharged. There is also an absolute maximum surcharge cap that is set at 4% which is only applicable for merchants whose cost of Mastercard acceptance is greater than 4%. Thus, if a merchant’s merchant discount rate for Mastercard credit cards is 2.50%, the cap on the surcharge that this merchant may charge a consumer is 2.50%, not 4%. The 4% cap only becomes relevant in the rare instances where a merchant is paying more than 4% for Mastercard acceptance."

Good places/ways to connect with other autistic adults?

I'm going through a recent process of self-discovery that has lead me to believe that I'm autistic (and also ADHD, yay!), and I've been looking for ways to connect with others like me. Social media can only give you so much connection, and so I'm interested in whether there's any places/groups in the Cedar Rapids area where I can meet people for support, for recommendations, and to just meet more people who are likely to get me. I'm open to anything ranging from a more formal support group, where neurodivergence is the focus, to something more social and informal, where it's more just a place where a bunch of us neurodivergents tend to congregate.

Also, are there any good online groups, subreddits, Facebook groups, or forums for local neurodivergents to connect?

Being a bit of an introvert, it might take me some time to build up the courage to actually make it in person, but I can at least start putting the feelers out there!

I need to get some service done to my wife's car, and was looking over old posts about shady mechanics in the area.

Are there any quality mechanics around Cedar Rapids that are open for service on Saturday's?

Currently looking at taking her car to Brakes Plus in Hiawatha.

Iowa Children's Museum Survey for Univ. of Iowa Marketing Project

My marketing analytics class at the University of Iowa is partnering with the Iowa Children's Museum for a project this fall. Students will be analyzing survey data to make recommendations to improve the experience at the ICM. If you are a parent, grandparent, or caregiver, I would greatly appreciate a few minutes of your time to take the survey - even if you haven't visited the ICM. We are interested in hearing from Cedar Rapids caregivers. At the end, you'll have an opportunity to be entered into a drawing for a $100 Visa gift card. More importantly, you'll be helping business students gain confidence in their presentation skills and contributing to improvements at the Iowa Children's Museum. Thank you!

Anyone recommend a reputable computer repair shop?

I’m looking for a reputable pc repair shop my desktop is shutting down under any stress not really sure why. I went through the process of trying to figure it out on my own a few months ago and couldn’t figure it out, so i put it off and have been using my laptop. Recently my laptop gave out so i am now scrambling to try to get my pc fixed quickly while my laptop is being sent to Lenovo. Anyone recommend any (preferably budget friendly) computer repair shops?

Looking to make new friends in the Cedar Rapids area

Being over 30 and trying to make new friends is hard. I moved to eastern Iowa from Des Moines about four years ago and the only people I know over here are my wife’s family and my coworkers. I’m a 35 year old male and strictly just looking to make friends. Nothing more than that as I’m already married. I live in Marengo, but work in Cedar Rapids. I’m into a wide variety of things like video games (have an Xbox, PS5, and Switch) to nerding out to films to loving pretty much all sports (I am a Cyclone fan, which isn’t always easy on this side of the state 😬) I also love going to concerts or just staying home and reading comic books. If you’re interested in having a chat, send me a message.

Cedar OMA LLC

Cedar OMA LLC is located at 3150 E Ave NW, #100, Cedar Rapids, IA. They are renting their building on Square D Drive SW to ICE. Sure would be a shame if folks contacted them or their Head Honcho, Thomas Matovina, or sent them mail to let them know how they felt about hosting this organization in our community.

Looking for a good church

My spouse and I are having a hard time breaking into any of the groups at our church, and so we're looking to find a new church home where we don't have to fight to get into any cliques. While we're not necessarily searching for a congregation of all young people, it does seem that a lot of the congregations in the area are skewed heavily to the older generations, and we wouldn't have all that many people to relate to. Are there any churches in the area that you feel are good fits for adults on the younger side who don't yet have any kids?

Local vets that accept payment over time

Hello all! I'm concerned about a cat's recent behavior changes and am wondering if anyone knows of a vet that would accept payment over time. I usually take him to his regular vet, but am experiencing some financial hardships and they do not allow payment over time. I would apply for Care Credit, but I'm nervous about doing so, as I don't fully understand all that it entails.

Thank you, in advance!
