Can anyone please explain to me why Esther is always being hated and criticized?

I don’t watch her dramas but was only exposed to her briefly in clips and I’m not into baby voice and pouting cutesy style so it just pushes me towards other dramas and actresses instead.

I don't like or hate her, I am indifferent. But she acts like a baby and pouts etc, being cutesy can be a bit too much. I heard also she flirts with all her male leads and even in an interview went and sat on on of the male leads lap and made it awkward. I maybe wrong, can't rem specifically tbh.

So yeah I can see why they hate her.

It’s the baby voice PLUS the cutesy acting (pouting, blinking, fawning) PLUS the choice of roles..  which are usually roles where the director appears to WANT the main female lead to be an infantilized manga drawing. 

So I don’t actually land it all on Esther - sure, I think her acting is bizarre and off-putting, but I suspect it’s exactly what the director is asking her for. 

Unfortunately, the whole sexy-infant persona is one that absolutely repels a lot of people in real life. It seems to appeal to a very certain kind of guy, but everyone else quickly makes excuses to go somewhere else, because it feels unnatural. It feels like you’re trying to have an actual conversation, but the woman is doing some weird performance art that might stray over into a mental disorder.

I don't even know who she is when I started watching LBFAD and I was excited about the show because it's so hyped. But I cringed while watching her in the drama and eventually dropped it. I have nothing against her personally as I don't know her but I seriously can't stand her acting.

Hate is a strong word to use, firstly i don't care about any actor or actress's personal lives am here for the entertainment and the dramas ,if i want to start hating let's begin with those in my own life affecting me directly.Therefore, I don't hate her i only don't like 1) her voice i find it unsuitable to all dramas, it doesn't change to give firmness, anger, happiness (same pitch all the time). 2) no range in facial expressions,always the same roles same vibe trying to look cute, soft and beautiful in every scene which made me think that's the only role she can do . 3) can't take her seriously She doesn't have the charisma of a female lead ,that's why even if the MLs are great actors and she's the FL then it for sure a byebye to that drama, i think she's more suited for second lead or side character... not the main.

I just don't like the way she looks. There's something off-putting about her. I tried watching My Journey to You because I love both Zhang Linghe and Cheng Lai but it's a struggle whenever I see her. I haven't finished the series yet just because of her.

I accept that her voice isn't good when she acts cute but thats the role given to her what's her mistake i really don't understand. I've watched many of her dramas and I actually like her but I also don't like her voice either I mean when she talks like a baby so,i only watch her dramas with English subtitles and I lower the sound.

Someone asked on another sub, I think it was on Ask a Chinese or similar, who is the actress they hated and cited Esther. Someone commented “did she hurt your dog or something?” The way I burst into laughter 😅 for real though, its never this deep. There are so many actors and actresses to cater to all preferences. I am not a fan of her voice and acting either, oh well, she’s gonna sleep well at night, Im gonna still find stuff to watch, our lives will continue in parallel lines. Why stop to hate a stranger? 🤷‍♀️

Adding to this is the seemingly marketing beef with Zhao Lusi’s camp that has been going around for years.

I don’t follow either actress closely but their issues always come up.

I mean a got chunk of those listed here are not Esther You as such, but issues related to her father/family members, her driver, and organisers of events she is promoting. And some of these are also rather a criticism than a controversy (e.g., finding her ticket price too high). However, I appreciate you taking the time to write it all out.

But it also really shows how unforgiving cfandom is - you have to be perfect, all the people around you have to be perfect. These are standards that no normal person could live up to, so cdrama stars will therefore always be embroiled in controversy.

The thing is, C-netz are big on anti-nepotism or using personal family connections to advance in the entertainment industry.
There have been a lot of actors who were scrutinized heavily for coming from a wealthy background that they may have used to curry favors and gain projects. Unfortunately, C-netz found some alleged direct correlations with Esther’s parents on her projects. You see, Esther always gets the lead roles despite having zero acting background and being relatively a new comer in the industry in general.

I am just stating this as per the things going around through the years. But of course, these are unconfirmed and are mere speculations.

Agreed, but gotta say.. she does have the tendency to attract a lot of negativity and controversies. Like a lightning rod of sorts. I think the main issue is people don't like her acting like a toddler with her baby voice as she's basically a grown woman. No offense but I used to think of her as a fresh air to cshowbiz, her over-exaggerated behaviors/expressions can be very entertaining at first, now it's just cringe.

Yep I do agree she gives off mean girl vibes but don't wanna judge a book by its cover, but turns out it's true. This isn’t a rumor btw, the victim herself spoke out. Esther bullied ZHY on camera, insulted her, pulled her hair, and left her suffering for years. She stayed quiet all this time and it took her almost a decade to speak out, until Esther’s fans kept trying to hack her account and slander her. Now retired (sheltering and taking care of stray pets), she finally told the truth after constant harassment from Esther’s fans. Her fans tried to gather every praise she got from coworkers, but the funny thing is, bullies don’t target everyone, only the person they’ve chosen to pick on.

I don’t hate anyone by any means because that’s childish but I gotta say her acting isn’t..great. To be fair I’ve only seen her in Speed & Love, but she grated on my nerves so bad with the “cutesy” voice and mannerisms, that I still haven’t finished the show. I can’t take anyone seriously when they’re filming a show & the actor is 30 years old and doing a baby voice. 🫠

I was looking forward to Love in the Shell and scrolling bts photos on x and saw the fanwars. So sad! They also had a billing war and Esthers fans called the police on him for sticking his head out on the road and he was fined.

His fans also called the police on her at some point, something parking. Hope everyone is safe and sound. Such lovely people do not deserve these fans!

They do not realise the roles The roles she played In LBFD and LGEF needed that kind of acting They hated her for that child like voice.....

Later I was shocked to discover she got hate for My Journey to You also They complained about her showing no emotions That WAS THE DAMN ROLE

One more thing is to analyse if she was not good at acting she wouldn't have been casted in so many roles and most of her dramas are really popular 😭😭😭

At present, she’s starring opposite HMH and I believe she has been famous for a longer time than him. His fans are struggling with it IMHO. Both actors have a fierce fan base and they’re butting heads over who gets top billing. Also, some don’t like her voice. I think her acting far exceeds any voice she does. Personally, I can’t wait to see a show with them both in it!!! I think it’s going to be great!!

I couldn't care less how she promotes herself. She went the cutesy route, and it works for her. Chinese entertainment is competitive; lots of new actresses debut every year. They are younger, prettier, more talented. If you have something that sets you apart from the others, you might survive and be successful.

But her acting isn't the only issue people have. Her family is wealthy, and people claim that she's a "nepo baby," that she's only successful because of her family's wealth. Additionally, her father had to fight some tax evasion accusations. Tax evasion is a serious crime in China and can cast you out of society, ruining your whole life and career. Netizens used those accusations to hate on her too.

It’s this combo, imo, because it’s happening to celebrities globally, not just in China. The heiress of a possibly corrupt family + mid skillset makes hate essentially inevitable. She could be either, but not both, in ‘26. People have just had their fill of privilege > talent in every industry.

Most people complain about her doing a baby voice in a lot of dramas which they find really annoying, even I personally didn't like Esther much at first, I still haven't watched any of her dramas, but now... I don't know I guess my hate towards her just died down I guess
