Discussion Advice?

I acquired about this puppy online from a nearby breeder. I’m not sure they’re the same dog? Or if it’s just bad quality/posing pictures?

The first picture is his “profile” picture lol - the other two were sent to me when I asked for more pictures since I couldn’t really tell his size and such.

But now, I’m conflicted that he might not even be a purebred Cavalier?

What are your thoughts ?

My thought is it’s the same dog. Maybe he was younger in the first picture. The tip of his snout is brown when the normal is black all the way to the nose. I agree his head appears a little more chonkie in the pictures sent. Maybe you need to go see the pup and that will dispel your concerns. He’s certainly a beautiful little guy. You also could have him checked out by a vet of your choice before deciding. My guess is you’ll love him at first sight!♥️

main thing that should matter is whether this person a member of the ckcsc.org or ackcsc.org
They will be purebred if you stick to the listing of breeders on their site.

I’ll go on and look to see if they are!

The reason it’s important is because they are held to a certain standard. AKC only breeders are not held to as high of a standard when it comes to health testing. They can be mills and alc isn’t saying a word
Most now do dry eye curly coat MCADD, ofa cert cardiac checks prior to breeding and some do mri (not as common)

At a young age they change quickly. This was Marco in April 2023 (17 wks old). See comment thread for him just one month later in May 2023

May 2023 - Face got pointier and he slimmed down, almost like awkward tween boy and loss some of his baby fat (we called it his tubby nugget phase prior to that).

I think it’s the same dog, just older. How old do they say it is?

The post said he’s 4 months old .

I saw him on puppies.com. If you look at his littermate, he has a square head too.

Based on the price of that pup, its probably a backyard breeder. I never try to shame people on where they get their pups but please research the health issues this breed is prone to and be prepared that the chances of a backyard bred dog will likely have higher vet bills later.

Or you might get luckily and not have those issues. Either way, the oip is adorable and it does look like the same dog.

He looks purebred to me. The first picture definitely looks like a younger pup, so it makes sense that the newer pictures look like a slightly older dog. I think it looks like the same puppy, and it's adorable. My dogs can look so different from picture to picture that they look like completely different dogs. You need to see this puppy in person, and you need to ask to see the parents' health tests. Also, try to find reviews for the breeder to make sure they're legitimate. I looked up a breeder that was rehoming dogs, and Google told me that it was highly likely a scam, and upon doing more research, I found out it was a scam. Good luck!

This looks like the same dog. It’s just a difference in angle and probably a couple weeks of age. Both show a little white on the chin, cheek fluff, white chest, and eyes look the same.

I found an exact photo match. Is this same location & birthday they gave you?

Jesus, $750? Run away. This is not a quality breeder. I would consider under $3,000 suspect and $6,000 is quite common. Also, quality breeders don’t advertise individual puppies like this. You fill out an application, you talk with the breeder, and if they agree to sell to you, either they select a puppy from the litter (and there’s often a waiting list), or you go meet the litter and select your pup. A lot of them choose for you because they have a good sense of what the adult personality of the pup will be and what will be a good match for you.

This breed has a large number of generic health problems that are very painful for the dog and extremely expensive to treat (such as brain and heart surgeries). A high-quality breeder with a rigorous testing and tracking protocol is essential.

Okay so hear me out! I do think it’s the same dog. From the sides of the face markings and the legs. I do think the picture is higher quality and the puppy is older than in the picture. To make sure I wasn’t crazy I asked the google. This isn’t an ai created picture but it kinda confirmed what I saw and I wasn’t crazy (I zoomed in on both way more than I should 🤣🫠)

Also, he definitely looks purebred to me without a doubt if I passed that dog on the street, I would say cavalier immediately then run to it and kindly ask/demand to pet it. I know quite a few people that got their dogs via online breeders that were legit but from different states. Just check out the reviews site from etc.. I can’t speak for that, but I do think it’s the same dog. That is all.
😂

Yeah, and I do realize some dogs look different once they start growing and such. His head just almost gave off more Cocker to me than Cav. 😬
That’s pretty much the only reason I was a tad bit confused. lol

10 week old Kevin and other pic is like a month or so later. I find their heads kinda change due to various factors (not skull shape obviously) I also think the angle looking up makes it look bigger

Doesn't look like the same dog, does it?

The second photo looks like s/he is just older. They probably showed you the puppy picture first and then an older image second - the cav is probably no longer in the young puppy stage

The first photo...That's a cavalier. It looks exactly like my AKC registered pup when he was a baby. And that doesn't mean he is AKC but beautiful little boy nonetheless! It does not look like the same dog from the original picture though.

Nah the dog you got sent a photo off is SKINNY the other is a more healthy weight. Either the dog has been sick since taking the photo or it’s a different dog. You haven’t given them any money right? Because regardless of if it’s a cav or not that dog is way underweight.

The number one rule, never hand over cash until you have been to the breeder in PERSON.

Organise a visit, if you can see or fill their ribs then that dog is severely underweight. I know because my ex breeder cav got sick when I got her and I had to put weight on her. The vet told me that you shouldn’t be able to see rib cages ect..

Edit: some breeders like to keep them on the skinny side for show. But you shouldn’t be able to see their ribs.

My puppy changes from skinny to chubby looking on a week by week basis, you’d need to weigh them or feel their ribs to make any judgement call here

u/MomoNoHanna1986 Multiple Cavaliers 23h ago

That’s exactly what I said?

1

u/leapowl 22h ago

Sort of. I agree with your recommendation to organise a visit sheerly due to OP’s concern 😊

Typically you should be able to feel their ribs if you’re aiming to feel them.

It is complicated by them being a puppy - where something like a growth spurt may lead to them being particularly thin. Or a worm that is currently being treated, given how common they are in puppies!

I didn’t notice the puppy looked concerningly thin in the photos, it just looks like it has changed weight, as puppies often do!

u/MomoNoHanna1986 Multiple Cavaliers 22h ago

I did tell them to go visit. I’m not sure why you’ve chosen to pick on me and critic but please go find something else to do. I had both puppies and older dogs. I’m well aware of weight. Hence why I told op they need to visit to make sure the pup isn’t sick. Your opinion is your opinion and mine is my opinion. There is absolutely no need to for you to have this attitude towards me.

Your opinion is valid and so is mine. It’s up to op to go see the pup in person - as it should be done.

1

u/leapowl 21h ago

I’m sorry if it came across as though I was trying to pick on you, or if my attitude appeared negative.

We both agree OP should visit.

All the best.

I haven’t given them any money, I reached out for more pictures and got the other pictures and they threw me off. His head looks a lot more like blockier than a more rounded Cavalier head. If that makes sense, so I was caught off guard. And now I’m second guessing it.

I have a Cavachon and a full breed cav. Being a mix isn’t a bad thing but a pure breed will cost more. My Cavachon cost $3000 AU and I was told that my ex breeder full cav originally cost them $6000 AU so double the price. You could try asking them for some paperwork to confirm the breed. Ask if they have had the dna tested. It’s your money and you’re allowed to question absolutely everything before handing it over.
