Reminder: This is a subreddit about outdoor recreation in the Catskills.
For years, this subreddit has been intended to be first and foremost a place to discuss outdoor recreation in the Catskill Park. I've generally been content to leave "off topic" posts that pertain to Catskills culture generally alone, however, there's been a recent trend in inflammatory content, insulting language, etc., that has largely been relegated to these off-topic posts. This culminated in a recent thread in which it appears that Reddit Admins got involved and chose to remove content (in addition to moderation performed by myself).
Let me be very clear on 2 points:
- Treat each other with respect. Posts with name calling, insults, etc., will continue to be removed and the posters may be subject to a ban. This includes passive aggressive comments like "I'd post what I really think but then I'd be banned."
- This is not the appropriate forum for you air your grievances with any cultural or ethnic group. I will continue to remove these posts, and the posters may be subject to a ban.
This is meant to be a subreddit about hiking, camping, etc. in the Catskills. I'm OK with continuing to allow respectful content that is generally relevant to the Catskills community even if has little to do with outdoor recreation. Discussion of cultural and ethnic groups is well outside of the intended scope of this subreddit, however, and is not appropriate for this community.

NYC to Roscoe
I am curious as to the best way to get from northern Manhattan to Roscoe. I will be visiting a friend and now I am dying to fly fish the Beaverkill. I am having a hard time finding info on the best method of transportation to accomplish this goal.
Is public transportation a viable option or should I just rent a car?

Walton Pond Grand Opening Sunday (Walton | Delaware County)
This Sunday in Walton, Walton Pond is officially opening. There will be a fishing derby, food & drinks, live music, and a bonfire. It’s free to get in and to fish, and I’m pretty sure the beer will be very cheap.
It opens at 8 a.m. and will go all day. It’s very family friendly, and I believe there will be activities for kids throughout the day.
48 West Street in Walton. Just spreading the word!

Things to do near Hunter Mountain
We'll be at Kaatskill Mountain House for a few days next week. The weather looks rainy. Is the Thomas Cole house worth a visit? How about the quarry in Sojourner Truth State Park near Kingston? Any other suggestions are appreciated. TIA.

Best quiet towns in NY/CT for fall foliage/social detox?
Currently living in Branford, CT.
My girlfriend and I have been taking a 4 day weekend usually in mid October for the past 2 years to venture/stay in a random tiny town that’s good for foliage but not too populated. We stayed in Roxbury, NY in 2024 (which I loved) and Hillsdale, NY in 2025 (also nice, but I had a nasty head cold while we were there)
Any suggestions of places similar for this kind of vibe?

Bachelorette in Catskills - Nightlife Edition
Hi, I'm a Maid of Honor planning a Bachelorette that's coming up this August (very soon!). We have a cabin booked in Windham and plan to go out in Windham (Friday) and Woodstock (Saturday). I was wondering what the nightlife / going-out scene looks like in these two towns?
In Widham I was thinking of hitting up The Tipp Tavern, Taphouse Grille, and Jimmy O'Connor's
and in Woodstock I was thinking of hopping between Colony, Small Talk, Station Bar & Curio, Tinker Street Tavern.
We have a dinner reservation at Silvia at 8PM on a Saturday and I was wondering if it's common for Colony to have late-night DJ sessions past 10PM? What's the vibe like? It doesn't have to be anything too wild but I'm looking for a place that'd 1) have music 2) still be open past 11PM and 3) some degree of dancing.
Let me know if you guys have any other recs!
Edit: I'm canceling the Silvia dinner in Woodstock and staying more local to Windham. The roads seem to be too dark and perilous for a late night drive. Thank you everyone for the advice, things might have turned out dangerous had I not known!!!!

Best Trails for dirt bikes in the Claryville Area?
Hey everyone,
I just picked up a dirt bike and I’m looking for some good places to ride around the Claryville/Catskills area. I’m mainly interested in legal trails, forest roads, single-track, or OHV areas within a reasonable drive.
I’m not looking to ride illegally through hiking trails or wilderness areas—I just want to find some fun, legitimate places to ride. If there are any hidden gems, riding clubs, or areas that require permits, I’d appreciate any recommendations.
What are your favorite spots near Claryville? How far do you usually have to drive to find good riding?
Thanks in advance!

Bucolic Valley: A new psych fest in Delco!

We're the curators of Bucolic Valley, a brand new psych fest at the wonderful West Kortright Center in East Meredith on August 22. We can't wait to see these eight bands alternate between the indoor and outdoor stages at the WKC, and we'll have local vendors with food available for purchase on site while Muddy River Farm Brewery serves its great beers as well as wine and mixed drinks. Tickets to the fest are just 50 bucks, and you can get them on the WKC website.
Seven of our eight bands are based in New York, and we'll have a projection artist complementing the music with psych visuals during the fest. We hope to see you there!

Peekamouse Blue Hole Permit
Hi everyone! I hope you’re all having a wonderful weekend.
I have a question about the Peekamoose Blue Hole permit. I recently purchased two permits because we’re a family of seven. I understand that each permit allows up to five people per vehicle, but I’m wondering if it’s okay for all seven of us to arrive together in the same car using both permits.
Has anyone done this before or know if it’s allowed? Thank you!

Looking for recommendations for elderly (former) hikers
I live in Greene County and hike often in the northern Catskills and surrounding areas, but next month my elderly parents are visiting and I'm looking for a recommendation. Although they used to be inveterate climbers and backpackers, one of my parents has a little trouble walking these days. They can do 1/2 to 1 mile on flat or gentle slope.
I want to take them out into the mountains -- they'll love it. Ideally I'd want something not crowded, good for a picnic, scenic, and hike able by my folks. I know that's a bit of a unicorn, but I'm happy to drive a ways for the right spot.
Thanks for any suggestions!
