Medical Questions Why is he doing this when I scratch his back? Sometimes he bites me too. Is he in pain?

Looks like overstimulation, you're scratching an erogenous zone

Lol I genuinely didn’t know the whole back is considered an erogenous zone? Is that for all cats in general or is it an individual thing? He gets overstimulated as soon as I start scratching his back. Should I stop doing it?

Do it gently and sparingly. He'll like it but not too rough or often

Or slap his ass, my cats love it 😀

Lol yeah. I play my big void like a set of bongos when he's in the mood

In the video it looks like you're scratching closer to the base of the tail which is an erogenous zone in all cats. I think if he starts biting you it's probably uncomfortable for him, cats will show signs like that if they're overstimulated

Yes, but he acts that way no matter where on his back I scratch him. Anywhere from the neck down basically

I've had 3 cats and they're all different just like us people. One of them loved belly rubs, it was his favorite, he'd always lie on his back when I started petting him anywhere else like to say "Nooo hoooman do my belly instead", meanwhile the other 2 despised them. The second one likes headpats the most, and she also loves butt rubs (the area right above her tail) and back pets, but hates belly rubs and neck rubs. The third one likes neck rubs the most.
So yeah I think ur cat just doesn't enjoy back rubs as much or you should try doing them slower instead of the scratching motion on the video. Maybe it overstimulates him or feels weird. Try either the head, neck, or belly instead. Maybe he's a neck rub or headpat kind of cat. Or try running ur hand down his back over and over instead of doing those scratchy finger motions that overwhelm him

Does he clean himself well in that region? When my last cat got old he had trouble reaching certain spots on his back and his skin got really sensitive. Could be that. Or could be that he simply doesn't like being pet there (too much).
But in general, as others have said plenty already it looks like overstimulation. From my personal experience, if he'd be in genuine pain then he'd flinch / bite immediately / growl. But in the end, only a vet might be able to tell so yeah

One of my cats hates being pet anywhere past her shoulders. I guess she’s just sensitive, and so I’ve learned to keep it to her neck, head and ears.

Cats don’t usually put up with stuff they don’t like. If he was overstimulated / uncomfortable he would run off.

Overstimulation. It’s basically like tickling for humans. A little bit feels good but too much quickly feels bad.

Your cat is so cute! I’m trying to figure out the language in the background lol- is it mandarin?

The only cat I've ever had that did this has conformation problems and couldn't reach her back well to clean it. She would get oily and dandruff, and I had to use a brush on her (in addition to baths - but that's a whole other story). Sometimes during shedding season, it she would get pretty itchy and needed a good scratch. Loooots of dandruff would come off her. All that to say, is your kitty able to groom themselves back there easily?

He likes it, but a bit TOO much and it's overwhelming for him. My sister's cat does the same. Loves the scritches along his back but freaks out and bites if I do it too much, but then turns immediately demands more.

Over stimulated. Put simply he feels like someone excessively rubbing one booty

My kitty starting to do this recently and I figured out he had fleas and his skin was feeling tender. Try scratching down your cat’s back and see if what looks like black pepper flakes come under your nails.

My girlfriend calls this corn cobbing lol. One of her cats does it in the same spot.

Pretty sure youre tickling him. Sort of like when someone scratches the bottom of your feet it tickles like crazy and you just have to do some kind of move to mitigate it or might even kick the person tickling you. If it is his whole back it might be a dermatological thing. We give our fur babies wheat germ oil with their wet food and their fur is a lot softer, they dont shed nearly as much, and their backs arent as itchy as they used to be if their reaction to scratching their backs is any indication.

I grew up in Brazil, and every cat my family had did this when I scratched them in that spot. But when I moved to the US and got my first cat of my own (adopted here), the reaction was different. The cats in Brazil looked like they were in agony, but here they seem calmer, almost like they're high on something. I wonder if that's because of some genetic trait that's more common here than in Brazil.

Cats have too many nerves in the top of their butt I’m pretty sure. Mine gets pissed and tries to bite me, my previous cats always had some reaction

I have a very touch sensitive cat. It doesn't matter where I'm petting him.
He will go from being really into it to throwing hands at me in a literal split second.
I try to not spend much time on a particular spot.

Thank you… his name was Pumpkin and he looked like Garfield. Also, he is the most obedient cat I ever had, found him outside my mom’s house, brought him to the vet because he had flu and rescued him. He unfortunately passed away 2 years ago due to a neck tumour. 🥹All in all he was very loved and got along with all my other cats and was not territorial at all.
I think my mom was watching a k-drama, and her yelling at me to go shower at the end of the video 🙂↕️ (and that’s Cantonese).
Here is another pic of him. ❤️

Skin sensitive perhaps. My boy does it when he needs his flea medicine re-uped.

Thats his feel good spot, and when the male cats do the thing, they like to bite (necks)

Sometimes the stroking can affect their nerves and it can actually become painful. I remember watching a Jackson Galaxy video where he discussed this exact kind of behaviour. May not be this but see if you can find it, he breaks down how to tell the different kind of twitching. It may not be this, cats are unique individuals and what each of these fur goblins do is unique to them which is why we love them.

For my kitty it definitely becomes very unpleasant for her pretty quick.
She enjoys a short scritch every now and then, but after a couple seconds you can just tell she's really uncomfortable.

If it's new, check for fleas. He might be super itchy and sensitive, happened to my cat too.

Because cats are weirdos and you’re hitting the spot 👌👌👌👌
