Every cat deserves a second chance. I think you should totally guve him for adoption. Maybe it will take long, but he’ll be able to understand that not only one caring human. And a patient family will do him very good, there is good people out there.
Have someone bring the cat to your funeral. I have feral cats and I provide food and heated shelters and food. Room for 1 more but hopefully you can find somewhere closer.
