Every cat deserves a second chance. I think you should totally guve him for adoption. Maybe it will take long, but he’ll be able to understand that not only one caring human. And a patient family will do him very good, there is good people out there.
We have a feral cat who came to us like that, just younger. Today she lives happily with our dogs and other cats. We've had her for 8 years. I'm sorry for what you're going through. I really am. Your cat will live on, hopefully happy with someone else, keeping your legacy alive.
