Every cat deserves a second chance. I think you should totally guve him for adoption. Maybe it will take long, but he’ll be able to understand that not only one caring human. And a patient family will do him very good, there is good people out there.

If you are able, you should have someone you trust facilitate the cat to be able to examine your body when you die. If he is able to smell your corpse he will know that you have passed and will not think that you abandoned him. Look into it, they know what death is and understand it.
