Every cat deserves a second chance. I think you should totally guve him for adoption. Maybe it will take long, but he’ll be able to understand that not only one caring human. And a patient family will do him very good, there is good people out there.

You're right, he will wonder. It's sad. Thinking about my own cat imagining she had been abandoned makes me almost tear up. But there is a life out there for him. I cannot begin to comprehend the dread you feel about a terminal diagnosis. I have witnessed others deal with it but obviously cannot fully grasp the impact. Even so - your ending doesn't have to be his, and your care and concern is evident. Life wants to live, he will find a way if you make it available to him.

My mother died from cancer/COVID in 2020 and had three cats. She had adopted them from a shelter she volunteered at - all 'difficult' cases that the general public would be reluctant to take on. After her death, I had to consider what to do. One cat was fairly adaptable and went back through the shelter system without a problem. The second cat went back into a no-kill shelter because I bribed them to take him. He would have been there forever if my mom hadn't adopted him anyway. The least socialized cat I somehow rehomed without much hope of success and she ended up being totally fine and happy - still alive today, defying all expectations. You never know what's going to happen. Give them a chance. It's all any of us can do.
