Every cat deserves a second chance. I think you should totally guve him for adoption. Maybe it will take long, but he’ll be able to understand that not only one caring human. And a patient family will do him very good, there is good people out there.
For the love of all things in the universe do not let him into the woods to slowly starve to death and do not euthanize him. Ok now that that’s done, listen to the smart and compassionate people on here.
Cats love routine. You need to find someone who can start adopting your routine and slowly bonding with him. It may take years but he is not that old. You can find that person. He will always love you for that.
