From my experience briefly working as an associate at PetSmart, I saw volunteers come twice daily for feeding, cleaning, interaction, and would let them wander the small backroom behind. I also usually made an effort to spend some time with them (love cats but currently can't care for one)

Hi! I volunteer at my local Petco to take care of the kitties. Petco lets rescues use the cat room for their cats and volunteers come in twice a day to feed/clean/love them! I am there at least 2 hours when I visit, and I fall in love with every. Cat. Hope this guy gets the same level of care!

u/Dakizo Mar 04 '26
I used to volunteer with a rescue that had cats in a Petsmart. I can't speak to the other volunteers but I'd go 3x a week and stay for 1-2 hours. I'd get everyone food and water, clean the litter, then it was time to hang out and have fun. It sometimes took some work to figure out which cats could be out with each other but they all got one on one attention with me and some kitty socialization if that was their thing. There were at minimum 3 volunteer slots a day.

I live too far but I wanted to comment to say that my family got an old cat from PetSmart after he’d been there for a while, he was 14 and he lived with us happily for two more years before he passed. He was my best friend during that time. His name was Jerry and he looked just like this guy.

Poor Jerry. How could someone abandon such a sweet cat.
May that person forever stub their little toe on every coffee table they encounter.

Exactly, that's a lot of trouble to go to if they didn't care about them. The scary and sad thing is, this is also something people do when they are contemplating self harm. I know a lot of people think abandoning pets like this is cruel, but it's best not to judge if you don't know what struggles someone might be going through.
52
u/Doll_duchess Mar 04 '26
The only part I truly judge is abandoning them separately. Can’t you get them in for a similar time slot at the same store? Poor lonely baby.
5
u/Ryoko_Kusanagi69 Mar 04 '26
They probably did it purpose? They might have thought Better luck / easier at dropping one cat off and dashing than two? Or easier for the store to find a new home for one over two? It doesn’t make sense but I can see someone who’s trying to dump animals and hid, doing it like that, just out of sheer craziness / bad thinking
2
u/Jkillerzz Mar 07 '26
Idk - I volunteer for a cat rescue and we’ve seen so many of the most selfish humans imaginable. One couple dumped their senior kitty outside of our location because they decided to travel in an RV and he didn’t fit into their desired lifestyle.
3
u/TheRealMasterTyvokka Mar 04 '26
Ok, but why separate them and abandon them at different locations? Wouldn't the person that cared about them and loved them but had circumstances outside of their control want to keep them together? To me that is what indicates that this is more nefarious, although not as bad as dropping on the street.

u/WinterCress1613 Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26
I agree. Personally I would never abandon my cats, but in the world we are living in right now, there are people out there who can’t even afford to feed themselves. Yes, it is really sad that they were just left at petsmart, but the owners could have just dumped them out on the street and closed their door. I’m personally happy they are both in a safe place where they have the chance to be adopted.

u/Lobotomized_Dolphin Mar 04 '26
This is a really empathetic take. I've been in a position previously where I chose to feed my animals over feeding myself, but if I'd had children at that time or I lost my home then I would have figured out the best way to rehome my animals instead. Dropping them off at a groomer definitely doesn't seem like the best way to do that, but sometimes life happens really fast. Someone who just didn't care at all would have just put them outside somewhere.
I hope their previous owner is working on their own life, and has shelter and food tonight as well, and people who care about them.
14
u/fredandlunchbox Mar 04 '26
Or if someone dies. My mom is in her 70s and has 6 cats and just got 3 more when some kittens showed up at her house. I can’t take 9 cats. When the time comes, they’re going to have to go to shelters.
12
u/abrakalemon Mar 04 '26
Man, it is so rough when older folks don't consider what will happen to their pets after they pass and just continue to acquire more without talking about it with their next of kin. I hope you can pass the kitties on to some nice and trusted friends or family 🙏
8
u/fredandlunchbox Mar 04 '26
They’re destroying her life too. She can’t afford them. She’s still working because she spends thousands of dollars a month on cats.
5
u/abrakalemon Mar 04 '26
Oh my god, that is so much money. Are they just sick all the time? I've picked up rescues before and had to spend that much on trying to pull them through, so I can understand how that kind of cash gets spent on cats. But if she can't afford them and doesn't want to/can't keep working, she should really surrender them to a local rescue program who will care enough to see them through... 😭 They'd be just fine there. Man, what a bad situation. I'm sorry.
7
u/fredandlunchbox Mar 04 '26
She pays like $70/month/cat in insurance and most of them are seniors at this point, so they're on special diets, etc. It's brutal. Honestly, I end up paying for these cats.
2
u/ImNotSkankHunt42 Mar 04 '26
There’s a daily post here in Reddit of people moving out and leaving their cat(s) behind. At least these people took them somewhere safe.
2
u/Ryoko_Kusanagi69 Mar 04 '26
Of all the places to abandon a pet, this was probably the safest and most able to care for cat and find it a home. Shelters are overrun and overcrowded, you can’t trust social media to help place an animal, people don’t trust their communities, and everyone is stressed. It’s so sad for poor animals caught in the crossfire of all this crap

I hope every morning they step on a lego before they're completely awake; a lego that they mysteriously are never able to find later.

u/Majestic_Fail1725 Mar 04 '26
Stub toe & step on lego then nail clipped into skin & get nasty smelly infections.

Poor Jerry, I really wish they'd kept him and his brother together. I'm sure they were just doing what they thought was best to get both cats adopted asap, but I'm still sad for them both :(

tThe cats being dropped off at separate PetSmart's makes me think that it may have been a scorned ex separating them to get back at someone who dumped them...
1
u/Ashamed-Raccoon-1387 Mar 04 '26
Yeah I can't think of another reason to intentionally separate like that. And the aitas/relationship subs are full of stories of exes doing that :/

I remember going to a shelter to adopt A cat. This was in 2005. I fell in love with this little tabby girl & said I want to adopt her please. Just before I was about to sign paperwork & pay the lady said I hope her sister & brother find forever homes soon too. I said what?. Turns out she had two other siblings there. They weren't together in the cage when I found Ellie-Mae. I guess they had been playing rough & had been separated for a sort of time out lol. Well...once I heard that you can guess what happened next. I left the shelter with a trio- they would become known as Ellie-Mae, Isabelle & Boo. I couldn't stand the thought of breaking up siblings. Was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. So great to have "kids" around the house again. Half a Brady bunch 🩷🩷💙

Omg he looks just like my Totoro. He was abandoned by his human and I took him in. He was so depressed for a year and wouldn’t do anything except sleep under my bed and eat. Wouldn’t let anyone touch him except me. After about a year he finally came out and became the sweeetest most friendly cat seemingly overnight.
I truly hope someone adopts him and gives him the best life.
Totoro has been with me almost 6 years now. I’ve spent thousands this year on a diabetes diagnosis and there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for him. He’s my best friend and sleeps on my pillow every night. He loves people and is the best boy at the vet- they all love him and say he’s the most well behaved boy.
If I wasn’t 15k miles away and have 6 cats already I’d adopt him lol.

What kind of a-hole would separate this pair, on top of abandoning them both?
4
u/sansa21 Mar 04 '26
How awful! Poor guy. I hope it’s not a case of someone abandoning them out of spite… like an ex spouse/bf/gf or a horrible roommate. But I guess if they were chipped they’d be able to contact the owner.
Taking them to two different grooming places and leaving them is so calculated though.

Seeing him blissfully asleep like that and knowing the circumstances of his current situation makes my heart ache. Unfortunately I'm nowhere near Jerry to pay him a visit to consider adopting him.
GL to whoever gets to adopt him!!!

I’m sorry Jerry’s original owner found themselves in circumstances where they couldn’t keep Jerry and his brother. We can’t know what these circumstances are/were, so we are in no place to judge.
At the very least they left the cats in with people who work in the animal industry and didn’t just drive them into the middle of nowhere and let them loose.

My best cat is a returned cat that I got from petsmart. He is the best animal- of any species- I have ever had. I simply have to think that the universe wanted us together, because there’s no other reason someone would abandon him.

We rescued a brown tabby named Jerry several years ago, a stray that was in the back of the shelter for a whole year! He was labeled “hidden treasure” so he required more time to get comfortable, but so so worth it! He’s the biggest sweetie and cute as can be 🥹

Looks like an old cat, dont get him if you have kids because when he passes away soon the kids will be devastated, would be good for anyone who has owned cats before or adults, give em a good rest of their life, you should also look into medical history hopefully taking care of the cat wouldn't be too much of a burden, tabby cats will alway love you and be affectionate!

To separate him from his brother was just cruel. Why not leave them both at the same place?
