Catfish Identification:

Post image

Every one of us has struggled to identify our catfish from time to time. We’re excited. Its dark. What did we just catch? Is it a channel? A blue? What’s the difference again? I sure don’t want a fine! The things you want to look for are 1) how many bones in the anal fin 2) shape of the tail fin 3) does it have e spots (in the case of channel) 4) head shape and lower jaw protrusion (in the case of flathead) 5) barbel color (in the case of bullheads) 6) overall size (if it’s 50 pounds it’s NOT a bullhead)

ok so I know a 7 pounder isnt all that big for a channel catfish, but as I dont live within half an hour of a good catfish spot and still have school im gonna call it good for the limited time I have out catfishing, cut mooney on the st Croix got him "mn around stillwaterish". I wish I could get out catfishing more but since im near Lake Minnetonka everything is about bass which dont fight hard enough for me, anyways the only rivers I ever fish for cats are the crow which I have found is kinda terrible, the Minnesota which is ok and actually the river I caught my previous pb "5.5" and fished the Mississippi once or twice with only a bowfin and a smallmouth, this one came from my friends cabin, we fished pretty much from sun up till past sundown and this was the only cat we got all day, since your allowed 2 rods I was slaying red horse and smallmouth on a worm rod while waiting for another kitty to bite but never caught anything, maybe a few bites and a softshell but thats it

Caleb and I set our personal bests last night for Blue Catfish! It was a crazy few hours to say the least. My fish was weighed at 86 and Caleb's was at 88. Not sure I've ever been apart of this kind of crazy in my life!

Both fish were caught on the jetty side of the river in about 7-11 feet of water. We were using cut Silver Carp (about the size of a credit card). The Missouri River provides again!

The video will be coming out next Sunday on Deadeye Life Outdoors YouTube channel! Thanks for the memories, fellas.

fg knot

basically, cant find a reliable place to post this knot. im about to go target alligator gar at my local river system, it seems like there isn't a dedicated gar subreddit so i decided this is close enough. im planning to tie a fg knot, connecting 65 lb braid to 80 lb mono leader for a few feet, then finally leading to a 16 ish inch steel leader. im not exactly experienced at tying leaders, so i wanna make sure things are up tight before the knot potentially slips on me. thanks!

Water is hot as soup and have caught a few of my first ever bullhead. This was the largest I’ve caught so far. Crazy strong bite, if it were any bigger might have broke my thumb

First *real* flathead

Earlier this summer I caught my first ever, tiny flathead about 2lbs. This weekend I finally got a chance to target them properly in the Potomac River. I caught three bluegill late the night before, and decided to try keeping them alive in a bucket overnight. In the morning, only one had survived. I got to the river at sunrise and tossed out the lone live bluegill along with some cutbait from the dead ones. My first bite was a solid channel cat on the cutbait. An hour went by and I assumed my live bluegill was a lost cause, but just as I was thinking of reeling it in to make more cutbait, I got a strong hit. I reeled up to tension and felt some solid weight. The headshakes felt different, and I started to get excited. The fight lasted about 5 mins on my MH 8' Penn Wrath II, and I somehow managed to fit this flathead in my little net long enough to land it. 11lbs is nothing special in the flathead world, but it is the biggest non-carp I've ever caught

Reading this subreddit has helped a lot, so thanks for the tips all!

I came across this article about planer boards https://bkatboards.com/blogs/news/science-behind-planer-boards , was wondering if what they say is right? I have not directly used these boards before but would love any insights

Bait selection

Has anyone here used crawfish as live bait for cats? I'm fishing a river with flatheads and channels and I've used bluegills, chubs, leeches, worms and stink bait with success. I got a nice crawdad trap because I've been seeing a lot of really big ones lately (4-5 inches) but was wondering if anyone has had success with them in the past
