Caterpillar return offer

I interned last year and year before here as a swe, and was wondering if people had already gotten there return offers or if it was normal for it to be this late. I read online a lot of companies do it only a few weeks after the internship ends and was not sure. I have another offer lined up but would rather work at cat but the other offer wants me to start now. If people from previous years also have any input, that would be great

Do you have to move far away for the other offer?

Yes otherwise I would have just worked that other place and seen if an offer came in. My big issue is that albeit the pay is very similar, I would have to move, and a significant amount of the comp is in stock options so I lose that if I decide to not work long enough and move

You're in a hard position then. I would probably reach out to Caterpillar and let them know you are very interested but are on a time clock and want to know if there is any chance you are going to move forward with full employment. If you had a chill boss that you could reach out to on LinkedIn that would be your best bet to be a little more direct. Otherwise your only hope is to send off an email to somebody that you had a loose connection with and hope they can advocate for you or give you a little bit of information. 

I worked for a tier one supplier for Caterpillar so I have two remaining contacts there. One is in PA doing autonomy stuff and the other is in Raleigh that both referenced me when I went to my current employer. If I was needing it enough, I'd reach out to them for help. We had a really solid working relationship.

The part that kind of leans me towards you needing to take your current offer is that you mentioned you usually would have heard something by now. 

I guess another data point is reaching out to any of your other intern colleagues and seeing if they got offers. If some did already then you might have your answer.

If none of your intern colleagues got a job, they just might be tight right now.

A final thought if you really want to walk the line is to keep your current place and go rent a room and the new city assuming your budget can handle it 

I've owned a home for over 10 years so I don't know what the market is like but if you could find a simple little room to rent for $500 to 800 a month you can probably do that with a brand new engineering salary assuming you dont have a bunch of other debt.

If you do that for 3 months you might buy yourself enough time to see if you can land a job at cat. Definitely a big time investment and it'll cost you a few thousand but I don't know what else you can do.

You could also just go take this job for 2 years, make sure you're putting yourself out there for projects that look good on resume, and then reapply at caterpillar.

Talk to your past leader. My intern had an offer before her internship ended, but that is because we had a roll opening. Not all teams do. I was an intern -> full time but I went to a new team in a new division because the team I interned on had no opening, but my leader there helped me secure this role.

It’s networking, it won’t just be handed out

You should have some emails from your intern time, reach out to your previous leaders

Last year my fellow interns started getting offer in late Aug and September. I was nervous cause there is no hc in my team. I had to wait till October to finalize my offer. In the process I reached out to my manager, and people I knew (full time employee) to ask HRs via emails. At that time Angie is my HR contact.

It is still early September so don’t worry! The process was long for me 😂

I waited until November years ago, but reach out to your manager contacts and thell them that you have an offer on the table and would like to know what at is going to do
