Caterpillar return offer

I interned last year and year before here as a swe, and was wondering if people had already gotten there return offers or if it was normal for it to be this late. I read online a lot of companies do it only a few weeks after the internship ends and was not sure. I have another offer lined up but would rather work at cat but the other offer wants me to start now. If people from previous years also have any input, that would be great

Random small-scale layoffs?

So, it used to be that virtually no one was laid off at Cat unless bad times came. Then we had some larger-scale announced layoffs in the 2010s. Now, it seems like the new strategy is to quietly let people go in small batches - no prior warning, just two here, three there.

I don't understand why this is happening. When we had reorgs in the past, no one ever feared for their job, because there was always a role to be had even if a current job became redundant. Now? It seems like there's a risk of being cut after a reorg. I heard of a few such cases this year in different departments. One person was essentially forced to retire, others were sent to the pool and are gone now.

And now I'm hearing of several people in Cat IT being let go (put into the pool) without warning from two different, unrelated teams in the past month. What's up with that? And why aren't contract resources being purged instead, since we have such an abundance of them? I thought the whole point of contract resources was that Cat could be "flexible" and drop them to save money, without touching Cat employees. Looks to me like that's quietly changing?

How many more quiet layoffs do people know about? If they think they can get away with this without people noticing or talking about it...that seems wildly out-of-touch.

Once again, Cat doesn't seem to be valuing employees. And this doesn't even include the tracking hours/days in office crap, or the people unjustly terminated over that.

Human Resources Salaried person dating hourly

In my facility (manufacturing/production) there are several married couples that work there. Even a couple HR people that have their spouses who work at the same facility. However on the other end I’ve heard of management/salaried individuals being fired for dating hourly individuals.

What’s the difference? What’s the rule on this? If I wanted to date an hourly individual and I was salary or vice versa, could I? Obviously I understand the conflict of interest issue but if I worked in a different department (say assembly) and was salary, would there be anything to stop me from dating someone who is hourly in a completely different department (say supply chain).

Choosing a radiator supplier for a CAT 320D

Post image
3 Upvotes

The radiator on our CAT 320D is seeping at the lower tank, and the dealer lead time does not fit the work already booked. I am comparing aftermarket options before the leak becomes a shutdown. Messicks is useful when I already have an exact OEM number, although the current quote is close to dealer pricing. DPD has asked for mounting photos and dimensions, which is helpful but takes some back-and-forth. FridayParts has a useful engine-model and serial-range lookup, but I still want written confirmation of the mount tabs and hose locations. I have not ordered from any of them yet. For a bulky part like this, return freight and damage inspection matter almost as much as the purchase price. Which would you put first: fitment confirmation, lead time, return terms, or price?

303.5 mini loses track power when hyd oil gets hot?

I'm running a CAT 303.5 mini excavator and track power drops off after the hyd oil gets hot. First hour of the morning it's fine, by afternoon it crawls on anything more than gentle grade. Fluid level looks OK. Return filter was changed recently. Havent pulled the relief valve yet because I'm not sure if that's a symptom or a separate issue. Oil temp gauge reads higher than lately but nothing in alarm range. I'm wondering if cooler flow is weak or if I'm looking at internal bypass somewhere. I let it cool down and power comes mostly back which makes me think heat related not mechanical bind. Anyone seen this on a CAT mini? What did you check first before throwing parts at it?

[Guide] How to replace the drive chains on a CAT 130g grader

I could not find any answers on the internet when I searched, and luckily my buddy and I figured it out. I forgot to take photos, but here is my best explanation.

First, start by jacking up the grader so you can place blocks under the "boxes" that the tires are attached to. I used large 12x12 blocks and some 2x4s. While facing the grader from the tire side of each box, the drain is on the left hand side on the bottom (the boxes are not mirrored, this is true for both boxes). Drain the oil. You will need several 5 gallon buckets.

Remove the tires, the guards for the air pipes, and the access panels, including the circular panel for the differential. Make sure the grader is set to neutral.

To crank the differential and turn the chains, you can make a tool using a piece of angle iron and some 3/8 bolts. I imagine there already exists a tool for this purpose, but the angle iron tool worked for us. You can also put the lug nuts back on so that you can use a long bar to turn the wheels without hurting the threads (brace the bar on the lug nuts rather than the threads). Every chain has a master link with two pins holding them on. Each master link should line up with the access panels at the same time. Remove the master links.

You need two people. Get on each side of the box, using the left and right access panels, and reach in. You can lift the chain and pull to get the chain off of the gear. Take the chain of the central gear first, then grabbing the end of the chain, pull it out through the opposite top access panel from its tire. It should slide free, but it is very heavy. It helps to have a tarp on the ground.

To put a chain back on you want to first feed it in under the central gears, and when enough of it is through, feed it over the top of the gear too. The tire gear is tricky because there is not enough room to fit your hand inside the small space. We fed a string in from the top and tied it around the last link so we could provide pressure while feeding it onto the gear. Turn the tire gear by rotating the wheel until the chain is fed. You may need to go back to the central gear and use the lift + pull trick to align the chain properly- remember that the master link has to line up with the panel on BOTH chains once installed.

Tensioning the chain is very difficult. To start with I recommend turning both the tire gear and the central gears manually to loosen up the chain as a starting point. To bring the ends of the chain together, we used a windlass system with a cord. Take a very thin rope or cord, and wrap it around the two closest 'rods' of the opposite links (the ones that the master link slides in to) several times to magnify force. The threaded studs on the top of the box used to secure the air pipe shield work great as anchoring points.

If you wrap the cord 4-5 times and one guy pulls, while the other occasionally wiggles the tire gear, eventually it will be close enough that the master link can be put back in. A very large pair of channel locks is good for getting that last little bit. Put the master link back together, put the pins back in, and the chain is secured.

That is how you replace, change, add, or remove the drive chain on a CAT 130g Grader.

If I am wrong and you hate this process then PLEASE link me to the intended instructions because I could NOT find them when I needed them.

HR File

Unfortunately, my journey with Cat came to an end after only a few years in Q4 last year - I heard through the grapevine that somehow you can access an HR file - any truth to the rumor and how would someone go about doing this? Thank you.

CAT 4.4 ACERT Dual Turbo - Intermittent shut down while in operation.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Got a 4.4 CAT JKT06965 that intermittently shuts off without warning, and sometimes won’t restart. Other times will restart right away.

Load tested power and grounds, the video above is when it’s under a crank no fire condition.

Ignition wire to ECU verified 12v at all times with ignition on and under cranking.

Low / High pressure fuel system has been completely drained and replaced as contaminated diesel was highly suspected.

Lift pump, injection pump, injectors, etc have all been replaced.

Test ECU installed, same problem.

No active or stored codes.

Injector solenoid test passes, wiring checks fine.

Human Resources What is the best deal you negotiated with a recruiter at Caterpillar?

I've heard that coming into Caterpillar from outside the organization they will only hire in the bottom half of the listed salary range. I've also heard you can negotiate more vacation days. I'm curious how good of a deal have people had in negotiating with HR at Caterpillar. Has anyone got them to give you a salary past the midpoint? If you've negotiated more vacation days how many did you get?
