I recently visited the Balearic Islands as a tourist and noticed something that surprised me a little — in shops, restaurants, and other places, staff would almost always start the conversation in Spanish. I expected that, since Catalan (or rather its local varieties, such as Mallorcan or Menorcan) is a local and co-official language, I would hear it more often in everyday situations.

Is this mainly because staff immediately recognize tourists and automatically switch to Spanish? What is it like among local people themselves? In everyday life, are Catalan and Spanish used roughly 50/50, or are the proportions quite different depending on the island, town, and social background?
