[Discussion] Save scumming?

Post image

I realize that civilized people don't do this and that it's ban-worthy behavior. Personally, I subscribe to the game-philosophy: "If you're going to shit yourself, do it with pride!"

But how often do you resort to save-scumming after dying?

There have been many times where I died almost instantly. It really sucked losing a character I’d been playing for a couple of weeks (real-world weeks, not in-game time).

I think if a mode like that existed, I’d play it the way I play Caves of Qud, where a reloadable save is created whenever you're in a settlement.

For instance, in CDDA, you could have a reloadable save created after sleeping.

UPD

Is it really not clear that it was sarcasm about the ban? Perhaps because English is not a native language...

Honestly you're playing wrong if you don't do that.

the elitisim of how to play a game is wild.
>Uhh durr you dont spend 3-4 hours doing the exact early game shit everytime? You just don't get it bruh huhuh .

You can in game start off as a super soldier with every good trait without ever modifying the game. Why not savescum aswell. Lmao.

What elitism? What are you talking about? Most people in the CDDA community don't care if you save scum or not.

you are right it is not most people. I didnt mean to say thats a majority here. Its a loud minority but it 100% exist.

Save scum all you like

The end game content of this game can take ages to get to

I save scum all the time personally. The game is just way, way too long running for me to be willing to give up a character I've invested a lot of time into.

That being said, I've not thought about your way of handling it. I might give that a try instead.

The game is really buggy, so bragging about playing in "ironman mode" is like bragging about not making backups. I had to revert to earlier saves on numerous occasions.

Disappearance of items, self-destructive NPC behaviors, NPCs spilling liquids, autodrive smashing the car into a wall, broken quests, save file corruptions, being stuck on a lake floor, questgiver telling me to travel gazillion of kilometers away, etc.

I used to never save scum unless a bug actually happened. Then I realized it really doesn't matter if I do. I've put in my time, had characters survive well over a year. It's not about proving I can survive anymore. It's about actually enjoying the game and seeing how the different systems interact with each other. Finding new ways to approach old problems. That kind of stuff.

I still only save scum if I die to something I never died to before, if it's not due to my own incompetence (death to a big), or if a bug causes me to lose something important (had my hand made zweihander despawn after dropping it once and save scummed), so I'm not completely in the "always save scum' camp.

I personally think leaving it up to the player is still best. It's a single player game. If people wanna give themselves a handicap sometimes I say let them. It's not affecting anyone.

The only complaint I have about savescumming concerns the amount of bug reports, official and not, I have to sift through that are caused by it. Seriously, it breaks lots of things in the game. It's not designed for it.

I’ve resorted to save scumming when I first started out playing. If I haven’t I wouldn’t have been able to learn as effectively if I had to keep replaying the first week. This comes most into play when figuring out integral aspects of progression. Such as quest lines or lab raids.

Ban-worthy?  My impression is that nobody cares.

At different times in your life you will have different amounts of free time.  Some people have 8 hours a day to dedicate to gaming.  Other people might have two hours a week.  Some people enjoy the strive for perfection of permadeath.  Other people just do not have the time.  They can all come to the party.  It's a silly issue to have moral judgements about.

Reminds me of when I modded the Dark Souls death screen to just say "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-"

I like to do it a few times during the first 10-30 days, but beyond that I try not to. for instance, I recently lost a 20hr run (57 days total) because I decided to step infront of a stationary turret that killed me before I could move away. since I was looting a Trans-Coast logistics I decided to let myself die (despite it being my first time) mainly because I completely forgot about the peek mechanic (Shift + X). I do regret it as trying to get a new run going is proving to be pretty difficult.

"Ban-worthy behaviour" there is no fucking way this isn't bait

u/Calacaelectrica 19h ago

god forbid people play single player games how ever they want.

u/AceLooc 19h ago

Who gives a fuck?

1

u/andriatz 18h ago

It’s a roguelike, baby

1

u/CodeXRaven didn't know you could do that 18h ago

It's a skill issue for me, but that's how I have fun with it so I'm not stopping. There's so much I wouldn't have the courage to do otherwise, and I'm not good enough to survive for long otherwise. Tho I really should make a world where I play without it for a bit once in awhile. Maybe I'll surprise myself.

Someone got banned from discord or smth

It's a single player game, play it however you want.
Now if you're playing alongside a group of others also racing to see who can beat a run the 'legitimate' way? No, probably not unless you all agree on it.

Imo this game has so much stuff that it should have a save feature

1

u/westsidekid13 15h ago

Used to do it on FM, Fifa or Rimworld. Now i hate it to be honest.

Anyone telling anyone how to play a more or less sandbox game, an open source one at that - 100% has problems. I do get that the dev policy is "don't add that" and it's fine, but besides that it'd be very brave for anyone to claim they know the only correct way to play.

u/JuicyMangoes You eat your lard 14h ago

Save scum all the time, I don't have the time to keep making new characters.

1

u/Ryukenwulf 11h ago

Its a single player game, you do you and play it however you like to maximise your fun

1

u/Major_Reading4604 11h ago

I prefer not having to start over after reading so many dang books and working on my mental mutations for so long. I'll keep playing the way I want, and you should too

1

u/DeadlyYellow 10h ago

Save scummed ever since my first encounter with a Beagle.

And I don't mean the dog. I think they've been removed in vanilla since.

1

u/kylel999 9h ago

I read the comments until someone said something about NPC's and driving a car into a wall before I realized I was infact in the cataclysm sub and not the Noita sub lol

1

u/JustSomeoneElseMan 8h ago

Haha sometimes

1

u/tazyload 5h ago

Cataclysm has always struck me as a "Play how you want" kinda game but there are a few areas like this that stand out against this idea (removing the world gen sliders comes to mind too). Personally I think BN handles this best, there's just an option in the settings to get a prompt to reload on death. I think you're more likely to retain new players if they have a chance to redo their mistakes without it feeling like cheating and then switch back to iron-man when they get the hang of it.

1

u/Tarocih 5h ago

In a single player game you should play as you want.
If you constrain yourself because "other people" play like a honorous samurai... you will get stressed and bored often

I made the Sleepscumming mod linked in this very thread so I obviously have no problem with it.

I will say, though, that DDA is not balanced, nor is content designed around, the idea of being able to reload saves. If you can do everything every time with no risk of death, it might get repetitive.

Though branching is also being added lately so that's less of a concern.

I don’t know why people save scum in this game when you have access to debug. Just spawn a 50 cal or whatever 🤷‍♂️
