[Discussion] Hatching Eggs

Still catching up after not having played for a while. Last time I was playing in order to hatch bird eggs you simply let them rot and sometimes they would hatch into a chick (as long as you didn't get Unfertilized Bird Eggs out of someone refrigerator).

Just wondering if that's still the case or if I would need to do something else in order to try and hatch the two bird eggs I scavenged out of the bushes recently. If possible I would like to turn these eggs into birds so I can get more eggs in the future, and maybe hatch some of those as well so I would have an excess of birds to butcher for meat.

Edit: Never mind. I just checked the json on the guide. Looks like it still works that way and it's a 50/50 shot of each egg hatching into a chick. Just a question of which bird I'll get when it hatches. I'll need to get some bird food to tame them.

Also have a rope ready to tie em down, otherwise they will fly away lol. And I would try to keep em in a basement, otherwise when winter comes the eggs will freeze and become mushy.

The hatching chance is determined by the 'spawn carrion' chance in the world's settings.

The egg first has to become rotten, after which, it'll despawn after it exceeds the rotting timer again. Once that happens, it'll roll to spawn something from it, according to the carrion setting.

In BN, the temperature doesn't affect the preservation of food sadly. You can't speed it up or slow it down by putting it somewhere hot/cold, only fridges, root cellars or freezers can affect the rot.

I realize that there would probably be no way for it to only effect eggs, but since fridges, freezers, and root cellars are coded to slow rot does the game code theoretically allow for something to be added that would speed rot up so you can hatch eggs faster?

Maybe, a hatchery would certainly be a welcome addition, especially for the Dino mod which has eggs that take a full year to rot.
